Fat Quarter Tuesday – Central Park Sudoku Quilt Kit by Kate Spain + Dogwood Trail Table Runner Kit by Sentimental Studios

The Sudoku quilt kit is a fun little idea developed by Moda Fabrics. This version features Central Park by Kate Spain. The kit includes 9 squares each of 9 different prints from the collection. You first solve the Sudoku puzzle and then use the numbers to guide the square layout.

As a bit of a math geek, I enjoyed the following that is printed on the kit description:

“The idea is to fill a 9 x 9 grid with these digits so that each column, each row and each of the nine 3×3 sub-grids that compose the box contains all of the digits from 1 to 9. In the overall puzzle numbers cannot be repeated in the same playing row, column or 3×3 box.

Although the name is Japanese, the concept of a number grid with only one appearance across and up and down was developed by an 18th century Swiss mathematician, Leonhard Euler. The Japanese puzzle company, Nikoli, made the puzzle popular in the mid-80′s. It became an international sensation in 2005.”

I’m certain I’m late to the party in making a connection that Sudoku layouts insure a beautifully random distribution of prints throughout a quilt design but I still think it’s cool!

Show me anything with a dogwood blossom and I want to make it. This beautiful Dogwood Trail Table Runner Kit by Serendipity Studios features a nice big swath of the focus fabric down the center of the design. The surrounding pinwheels are made with 5″ x 5″ squares. Simplicity and elegance.

Let’s talk about kits. I’m a kit kinda girl. I grew up going to Lee-Wards with my grandmother (man, are those FOND memories!) and adore anything in a bag that contains pieces inside waiting to be assembled. Felt ornaments with sequins and beads, printed embroidery cloth with floss and needles, fabric and pattern ready to be stitched together. Comfort sewing. The project defined and a guaranteed outcome. A time to be busy with my hands while letting my mind dream and wander about without needing to belabor design decisions.

What do you think about kits? Gasp, that’s cheating! or a welcome respite. What type of kits do you like best?

We’re giving away one of each kit, leave a comment for a chance to win.

I don’t know anything about Sudoku puzzles, but the fabric is very pretty. I don’t buy kits – I don’t want duplicate someone’s idea – I have too many of my own ideas bouncing around in my brain. I think kits are a valuable solution to beginners and when someone confidence in their color selection is not developed yet.

I like the thought of kits, but haven’t bought one yet! I like that the fabrics are already coordinated; something Ihave a hard time doing. I just don’t care for the cost although I know it really is a deal…

I love Sudoku! I make a Sudoku quilt a few years ago – it was a lot of fun. Great idea for a kit.

I don’t usually buy kits, preferring to pick my own fabric and design, but I can definitely see the appeal!

I want to make a sudoku quilt just because it’s such a neat idea. Hmmm….maybe for my sister for Christmas since she does sudoku puzzles all the time.

LOVW the Sudoku kit! I’ve never bought a kit, but I’ve been tempted. I am color-challenged, so coordinating prints and colors is hard for me. I’m working on it, but I love the idea of buying the whole shebang at once…so easy! Thanks for the chance!

What fun – Sudoku and quilting! Love the colors of the fat quarters. Kits – they’re great for women like me who need a creative outlet, but have limited time because of work and managing a family to accomplish projects.

I’ve never used a kit, but I’m itching to try. I can’t be expected to be brilliantly creative all on my own every time out can I? Besides, seeing how other people pair fabrics and patterns helps me figure out what I like!

I LOVE a god kit! It’s all about packaging for me, so if it comes in a cute little bag, or is wrapped up with a piece of ribbon/raffia/ripped fabric–even better! :-)

I am a recovering kitaholic! I really do love them! Before I retired they were such a nice way to speed up the process of whatever I was making and give me a finished project that I love. Now I have more time and am branching out choosing my own colors and designs. My favorite kits are for projects that I would never do on my own and help me stretch my skills!

I’m starting to like the kit idea. I start dragging out my fabric and before you know it i’ve got a mess to clean up before i get started. Sometime it will shoot me off in another direction because i remembered something i was going to make with a fabric i pulled out. :)

Kits: part of me says ‘Kits! that’s cheating!’ but then the other part of me says ‘Ahhh, I can relax with the process and just enjoy the execution without sweating the details of parts and pieces’, quickly followed by ‘Let’s see what’s here to play with!’ I have only made one quilt kit but I enjoyed it – it gave me the chance to try something new and there was enough extra fabric there to play a little with the design and all the parts were included (except the batting, of course).

I’m not a big fan of kits, but every once in a while I run into one and just have to have it.
I really like the Sudoku idea, sounds like a challenge.

I have always shied away from kits. I’d get ideas from quilts I’d seen but then choose different colors and change this up a bit! I am however presently doing my first ‘block of the month’ club and loving it!!! Love the ‘central park’ fabric :)

LeeWards, wow is that a blast from the past. They had a catalog and my grandma bought alot of her stitching supplies from them. She embroidered 8 or 10 full size tableclothes all chosen by me because that was the one I wanted. Then someone would admire it and she’d give it away and I’d chose again. I got the last one, because her eyesight went bad and she said “I taught you how to embroider, you can make the one you want!”

I have made a Sudoku quilt with out the kit. I really like the way they turn out. As for kits, I love them! Everything is right there for me to work on. I don’t have to go through all the trouble of picking everything out, someone else already did the work. It isn’t much different than buying a pattern and picking a line of fabric to go with it.

I like choosing fabrics to go with a pattern. However, kits are great on occasion as they take all of the guess work out of fabric selection. Thank you for the chance to win on of these great kits. Take care and God bless, Cory

Yes, I love kits. Most of the ones I have purchased have to do with stitching and embroidery. As the proud owner of a pink Nintendo DS on which I play Sudoku 95% of the time, the fabric is great!

I think kits are a fun change… especially when they are pre-cut! The (seemingly) endless cutting is the one part of quilting that I don’t like so much. That Sudoku kit is such a fun idea… I love doing Sudoku puzzles; my husband and I actually do the battles, where you see who can finish first.

I was wondering what sudoku quilts meant! I love dogwoods too, briefly a few dogwoods flowered on my way to one of my jobs.

I adore kits too, and I like your apt description of them as comfort sewing!

  40. Laurel
    July 27, 2011 | 9:38 am

Kits really are not my thing. Mostly they are too simple. I prefer the challenge of creating my own designs often with a Mariner’s Compass, New York Beauty, or other pointy patterns. Set in seams and accurate points for me are as simple as any straight seam although most quilters that I meet think such things are too difficult.

I do like the dogwood fabrics in the table runner. The things I could do with that fabric. lol. ;> I have several table runners in my mind that I would like to do but I have too many other projects in progress. I might just be able to squeeze this one in with its one piece central panel.

Most of the time I like to pick my own fabrics, but sometimes I like what others have put together, so I don’t mind the idea of kits. I do LOVE,LOVE,LOVE the new dogwood fabric though.

I’ve never worked on a kit I think it would be nice to do but they always seem expensive. I like to fool myself about the cost of making a quilt, I buy the fabric for the top first then shop for the batting and backing and when that’s finally put together I’ll go back to the shop for the binding.

I love the idea of kits – having everything all there and ready for you to sew up. On the other hand, I like to individualize my own work, which is hard to do with a kit. Maybe it’s just a matter of substituting one or two fabrics with something from my stash!

I am a Sudoku dork! I love it! I’ve seen these kits online, but haven’t gotten my hands on one. I just love the idea. I have never used a quilt kit, but am not opposed to them at all. It’s hard for me to spend that much money at one time. Usually, I buy cuts as I can and build a collection before starting a quilt project. Thanks!

I occasionally will buy a kit, when it is just what I want, in the colours that I want. They eliminate the trouble of finding the perfect fabrics. I have a Halloween kit on my shelf at the moment. Thanks for the giveaway. I’ve never tried a Sudoku kit.
