Welcome to Week 18 of the One Yard Wonders Sew Along!
Week 18 – Project 42
Matt’s Map Bag – designed by Matt DeVries pg. 115

Tracy selected 3 fabrics for the Map Bag. Michael Miller Fabrics Honk Honk Brown, Michael Miller Fabrics Dumb Dot Gray, and Kokka Trefle Travel Bags Natural.
Materials Needed:
1 yard of 44/45″ fabric (heavyweight)
2 yards of 1 1/2″ or 2″ webbing
1/4 yard of double-sided fusible web interfacing
1 metal or plastic slide, 1 1/2″ or 2″ wide depending on webbing width

Tracy’s Tips and Thoughts
- Matt’s Map Bag is a practical, simple to sew project. The instructions are well written and easy to follow.
- The only challenge was the bulk in the corners when sewing the bag exterior and lining together then top-stitching through all the layers. Next time Tracy will grade the seam allowance in order to trim more bulk out of those areas.
- A regular sewing machine foot wouldn’t sew over the vinyl, she used a teflon foot with no problem.
- Tracy had a hard time locating 2″ webbing in the color she wanted. She used pearl gray Rit Dye to match her bag. Using the dye gave wonderful depth to the strap. Next time she makes a Map Bag Tracy will use 1″ width strap to better fit the scale of the bag.
- This basic design would work in a variety of shapes and sizes; it’s very cleverly constructed.

Tracy is travel ready!
Week 18 – Project 43
Beach-Time Towel Totes – designed by Michele Chisholm pg. 118

Jacqui chose Robert Kaufman Metro Living Zebra Stripe Black to go with her orange and white beach towel.
Materials Needed:
Beach Towel
30″ of 1 1/2″ webbing
one 14″ zipper
sewing machine zipper foot

Jacqui’s Tips and Thoughts
- The Beach-Time Towel tote is more versatile than the picture shows. It’s a chair cover (that stays put!), a tote and a portable purse.
- The zippered pocket is convenient for keys, camera or a bit of spending cash. Even when you use it as a chair cover, your items will not fall out.
- Since the towel will most likely get wet, you might want to first place your items in a plastic bag.
- Jacqui used a lighter weight beach towel. It fits nicely within its attached tote and it was much easier to sew through.
- The Zebra striped webbing from Jacqui’s stash is perfect for the strap.
- The project is easy, quick and straightforward. Love it!

It’s the perfect gift for a grad, summer birthday or just because.
How to participate: One Yard Wonders Sew Along Details

Whoa, the towel tote is really cool! I had a hard time envisioning it and now I have a good sense of it. Thanks for sharing.
I’m a beach girl and so I absolutely love the towel tote, can’t wait to make myself one!
Hurray! I’ve waited for this week all year! I was most concerned the sewist would have suggstions to make the pattern better, but there are none, and I’m so happy. As far as I know, everyone I have sewn the bag for over the years has loved it. One year, several teen friends of my daughter waited patiently for their birthdays to come round so they could receive one. I actually got tired of making them … Thanks to The PCS Team for taking the book on. I’m sure all we amateur project authors are thrilled to see the individual ideas sewn up in marvelous fashion. — michele
Thank you Michele for your nice comment. We are having great fun with the One Yard Wonders. Jacqui was the sewist for the Towel Tote project, she absolutely loved it! We have a lot of summer birthdays in my family and I plan to make the Tote for gifts. Thank you for the fun pattern/idea
.
I love that tote… the fact that it is a chair cover as well is fantastic! I hate having to constantly reposition my towel on the chair while sitting by the pool. I need it.
I just love that map bag! Thanks for the suggestions. I’m going to have to add a lot more inserted pages to my One Yard Wonders Books with all of your suggestions and the publishers errata that you’ve shared here. Thank you for taking this all on – it makes the book so much more useful.
Crazy about the dyed webbing! Sweet…
Tracy always amazes us with her creative solutions, we all flipped out when she told us she’d dyed the webbing to match!
Well done gals! I really love the beach towel bag!
The projects are wonderful. I pulled out some of my bag patterns, now I need to decide what to make, something simple to start.

The towel tote looks so fun!
This is perfect for my summer lovin’ girls!
Wow – both of those projects turned out better than they looked in the book. I was surprised by the versatility of the towel bag – what a great idea! And the map tote might just be my next purse. Great projects!!
Ohhh! This is perfect – for sitting on those chairs when you are dripping wet!
I just have to have one of those Beach Towel Totes! Not only for the beach….no more sticking to the chairs anywhere!
Love the bag! I’ve been meaning to make a messenger bag like that for my fiance, this is totally awesome!
this is adorable! i saw a light weight towel on sale this week and passed it up thinking I didn’t need just another towel. but maybe I do…
thanks for the inspiration.
Love the travel bag! Could have used that last week when I was in Paducah to keep my camera handy!
I love this towel tote. I need one of those!
Very cute bag!
I love the beach towel bag! I think I’ll have to make both of these projects. They would make great gifts and I already have recipients in mind
My “to do” project list is so long already this year… I hope I get these done by Christmas!
The map bag is fab!
Both projects came out great! love the map bag and the fabric and the towel bag is wonderful too, great for going to the park or the beach!
I had no idea how versatile the beach towel bag was until you showed us. Talk about a great gift for grads or teens — love it!
Love the beach towel project. Living in Florida, it would come in very handy. And it is so hard to find useful projects for men. The map bag looks like it would do nicely.
Thanks for reviewing the OYW projects. I always look here to get your advice before I make a project in the book.
That towel is so cute!
I just love everything and am already plotting my first purchases!! I’m so glad I found you.
Love checking the projects each week and thinking about which ones to do ! Need some graduation gifts and think the towel tote would be perfect ! Think I will embroider SENIOR 2011 on it ! Thanks for the fun ideas !
Seeing the projects and the suggestions is always fun. This week, though, I think the most fun was reading Michele’s reaction to the posting. I can imagine how excited I’d be to see something I had designed be featured here.
Both bags are so practical and cute! I love the travel-themed fabrics in the first project!
Both of these are fabulous, and both Tracy and Jacqui did wonderful work. I think Tracy should take a special bow for dying her webbing — I am sure I would have driven myself crazy shopping for it instead — and for doing such a fantastic job of it!
These projects both look great! I love how versatile the towel bag is.

Both of these projects seem to be very helpful. Good work!
I love this towel tote – I can see myself making one. Good fabric choice too.
What a great project!
This would be really useful – I love the colours Jacqui has used!!
I have a daughter who is a beach lover and this this would be perfect for her summer birthday. Thanks!
I can’t wait to make this beach bag for my grandchildren who love the beach!!!! So glad there were no corrections.
Wow! I never would have thought to dye the webbing. Is the marbled pattern on it from the dying itself, or was it like that before? It looks amazing!
The map bag is perfect for traveling around. Just big enough for a map, a book, sunglasses, camera, wallet, and phone. Plus the big flap would sure help to keep pick pockets’ hands to themselves if ever venturing into a sketchier area!
How is the flap put on? Does the back panel have extra length to it or was a flap sewn on straight?
I just recently purchased this book and was so EXCITED to find your sew-along! So far I have made a map bag and 2 beach towel totes. I am a beginner and just love this book. It’s great that you share your insights about each product. Thank-you Pink Chalk Studio.
I envy your work , regards for all the great blog posts.
Undeniably consider that that you stated. Your favourite reason appeared to be on the internet the easiest factor to bear in mind of. I say to you, I definitely get irked while folks think about concerns that they just do not know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and outlined out the entire thing with no need side effect , people could take a signal. Will probably be back to get more. Thank you click
