One Yard Wonders Sew Along – Week 13 Finished Projects

Welcome to Week 13 of the One Yard Wonders Sew Along!

Week 13 – Project 32
Origami Organizer
– designed by Katherine Donaldson page 88

Kathy selected My Folklore Posies Violet + Blue.

Highlights of Materials Needed:

1 1/4 yard of 30″ wide medium or heavy weight fusible interfacing

1 skein coordinating embroidery floss

Kathy’s Tips and Thoughts

  • Kathy used a medium weight fusible interfacing that measured 22″ selvage-to-selvage (shorter than the 30″ specified in the pattern). Two pieces were cut and placed side-by-side.
  • The medium weight fusible was a bit floppy. If Kathy made this again she would try CraftFuse or a heavier weight fusible to give the sides of the box more structure.
  • The instructions and marking guidelines are 100% accurate. The folding and machine stitching can get confusing. Hang in there and follow the instructions. It turns out exactly as described in the pattern steps.
  • Kathy replaced the fusible interfacing on the base with Pellon Peltex #72 (double sided fusible) extra firm stabilizer. She fused the bottom fabric to one side of the Pelxtex and then wrapped the fabric edges around and fused them in place. This gave the box a firm base to sit on. The double sided fusing kept the edges in place and made hand sewing the base to the top easy.
  • Kathy used Lecien’s Cosmo Embroidery Thread to secure the tops of the compartments. WOW! She’s a total convert (it’s strong and beautiful). Kathy ordered hers from her friends at Wooden Gate Quilts in Danville, CA.

Week 13 – Project 33
Artist Brushes Case
– designed by Susan W. Schurz page 92

Alicia chose 2 fabrics. Junko Matsuda Tip Top Hippos Grey and Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton Blueberry

Highlights of Materials Needed:

1 yard of 1 1/2″ ribbon

Alicia’s Tips and Thoughts

  • The pattern was clear and easy to follow.
  • Alicia wanted to use the case for 6 inch long double point knitting needles rather than paint brushes.  She made the following adjustments to fit the short needles:  cut the front and back fabric 15″ tall (rather than 22″); cut the pocket 6.5″ tall (rather than 9.5″ tall).  To accommodate the small needles (size US #3 and smaller), sew the needle pockets 1 inch wide.
  • The pattern calls for medium or heavy weight fabric for the case.  This is especially important for small, sharp double point needles – they’d puncture light quilting cotton.  The hippo fabric is canvas-style and heavy enough to prevent poke-throughs.
  • She also placed the ribbon lower than in the pattern.

A perfect gift for knitters!

The projects turned out great. The organizer seems a bit too finicky …not something that can be done in ‘stolen moments.’

Ha! I keep ending up with the time consuming ones Margie! This project does have a lot of steps with marking and hand sewing. The pattern is excellent and I enjoyed the cleverness.

Both of you did such beautiful work! Your choices really bring out the best of those projects, and your tips are great. If I make the organizer I will be sure to use sturdier interfacing as you recommend, but Kathy’s does look lovely. (Love that Folklore fabric. I made placemats from the previous Folklore collection and have my eye on this one. No!)

Oh it’s so thrilling to see someone make my organizer, thanks! It’s definitely on the floppy side, great for sitting in one place, but not for carrying around. I thought about adding some cardboard to the base to stiffen it too, if that’s more what you’re looking for. Also, I originally made this 1/4 the size, divide all the dimensions by 2. Then the whole patten fits in a fat quarter, and is great for little things. (I scaled it up to use one yard for the book, but really I like it better smaller.)

I really enjoy your tips and tricks and how you modify the pattern to meet your own needs. I recently made a knife case for my daughter and couldn’t find a pattern anywhere, so I made it up. The Artist Brushes Case might have made a great starting point and taken some of the angst out of the project. As it is, it turned out OK and fulfills it’s purpose, but it might have been nice to have the benefit of someone else’s experience.

I think this book will have to go on my wish list. Thanks for the helpful reviews.

I’ve never used Pelltex but it sounds interesting. I don’t know that I would want to try it on this project.. I read the directions and it sure looks complicated! But yours turned out great!
