One Yard Wonders Sew Along – Week 5 Projects + Fabrics

Week 5 – Project 9-12
Bathroom Makeover – Designed by June Scroggin – page 41

The fabric selected for this project was a group effort. We decided to use laminated cotton for the shower cap eliminating the super thin vinyl and taking a step out of the shower cap construction. The laminated cotton selected is Erin McMorris Weekends Dots and Loops Peach. The fabric for the towels is Liz Scott Sugar Pop Painted Flowers Cream Pink and Dots Dot Dot Dot Eggplant.

(A note on the directions for the shower cap: there appears to be a misprint in the book which is not on the official errata page. Cutting the cap with a 30″ diameter resulted in a very large cap. June responded to us quickly and sent along her original pattern instructions which call for a 24″ circle.)

Week 5 – Project 13
Two Drawer File Cabinet Cover –
Designed by Sharon Madsen – page 45

Tracy selected Valori Wells – Jenaveve Linen Floral Birds Garden Fresh. Tracy decided to make her own bias tape from Valori Wells – Jenaveve Linen Pebbles Teal. It required an extra 3/4 yard of fabric to create 10 yards of bias binding.

For this project you will need 6 fabric covered buttons or select 6 fun buttons 1-1/2″ in size.

Love the file cabinet cover idea, and that fabric is divine!!! I need file cabinets and see them at the thrift store all the time, but I can’t get myself to bring them home because they are so ugly… hmmmm, I think I need to make a thrift store run.

Love the Valori Wells prints. They are so fresh and modern. Years ago I had an ugly file cabinet I got when a store was closing. I wished I had thought of covering it back then. Great idea!

Ah! Wish I had seen this sooner–the filing cabinet cover is so lovely & I just donated a filing cabinet to Goodwill because my husband has pretty much hated it since we got married because it was so ugly (it was).

I am so tickled you are trying my bathroom makeover projects. Just to clarify the concept of “one yard”. I took the book’s mission quite seriously and made every single bathroom makeover project out of one single yard of fabric, not an individual yard per project; instead, every single project came out of just that initial one yard. What you don’t see in One Yard Wonders are the other items I made using leftover pieces; e.g., a portable watercolor kit in a basket embellished with fabric pieces from my original one yard of fabric, including a roll-up paintbrush case. I also decorated a bar of bath soap and so on. Every inch of that one yard of fabric was used to make something. There was a big lesson in doing this for me as I learned I waste a lot of fabric on just one project when I can utilize it for other things as well. Just thought I’d share this with you. Enjoy (I hope) my projects!
