One Yard Wonders Sew Along – Week 1 Finished Projects

Tracy used a 16 x 20 store bought frame. Remove the glass and cardboard. The fabric she selected is Sugar Pop Mod Flowers in Cream Pink by Liz Scott.

Tracey’s tips.

  • 16 x 20 Frame
  • craft store acrylic paint (mixed to match) sealed with matte sealer
  • attached thin cork with spray adhesive to foam core then cut to size
  • used masking tape to adhere fabric instead of staples as recommended in book
  • for reassembly the original staple didn’t work. Pretty purple duct tape to the rescue.

Tracy liked the project so much she intends to make 2 more tack boards at home. She recommend lining the fabric with a layer of white fabric or even interfacing as the cork board shows through just a bit.

Diana found a bookcase at a thrift store.  First she repainted it white. The size is approximately  32″ x 25″.

Diana chose Amy Butler Soul Blossoms fabrics for the lining.  From the top down, Temple Doors in Deep Water, Laurel Dots in Periwinkle, and Temple Tulips in Azure.

Diana’s tips.

  • the back is not removable (like the bookcase in the book) so each space was measured and cut to fit.
  • more fabric may be required for centering large prints
  • the book calls for poster tape. Diana used simple double sided tape.

Ta Da!  Diana enjoyed the project. Its easy with no sewing involved!

We may have to try this in the Pink Chalk shop with some new storage shelves we just purchased.  We’ll post pictures when complete.

I MUST do both of these projects. Some french fabric for a corkboard in my kitchen and hmmm where shall the bookshelf go. We had one given to us that NEEDS this done. The back is warped but the rest of it is in great shape. The perfect solution. Now I just need the time!!!Great job everyone, I cant wait to see the next one. Love the book.

Well done, ladies! Carrie and Diana, you know me…I need inspiration, so I will be going to buy paint today for my old cork board. It doesn’t come apart, but I can cut the fabric to size and then add trim around the edge for a finished look. Looking forward to what’s next.

Let’s hear it for synchronicity — I just covered a tack board, but only now I have found your post. Mine is good, yours is much better!

One fun thing I did: used Fabric Mod Podge to cover the backs of some thumbtacks with scraps of the fabric I used for the tack board. It took virtually no time and didn’t require precision cutting.

The frame looks great! A quick way to add colour and pattern to any room.

If my bookshelves weren’t overloaded with books the second project would be perfect!

I love how these turned out! For the frame, did the original staple not work because the cork board and fabric ended up thicker then the glass and cardboard? That’s what I worry about. I have that problem when I buy already matted prints and then buy a frame at the store for them – they end up not fitting!

I just love the bookcase! I think I need to get out and find something in need of the Soul Blossoms touch- it looks fantastic.

Love the corkboard…and I have everything I need to do this today! Strange how that happens from time to time. I have a few frames that are missing glass (ooops! but the thrifty New Englander in me couldn’t just toss the frame! LOL!)

Is there a way to post pictures when we are done?

Bookcase is cute, but my book cases are all so jammed full of books, you’d never see the back!!

It can be impossible to clean the paint from a bookshelf like that completely, I tried! This is delightful alternative and beautiful fabric if treated with a coat of scotchguard is so durable, what a fabulous idea!
