I absolutely LOVE the way sewing fosters community, goodwill and personal achievement.
Here’s a sprinkling of interesting e-mails I received this month that remind me how sewing really does make the world go ’round:
- Victoria sent me an update on the Bumble Beans Quilt Gather project. Photos from the project’s recent distribution day say it all. Way to go girl!
- 100 Quilts for Christmas is an effort to encourage quilters to make baby and children’s quilts for donation during the holidays. More information here.
- I received a fabulous note from Tracy who is a Program Coordinator for the Girl Scouts – San Jacinto Council which services SE Texas. They’ve created a website to support their quilting and sewing program. It’s really an amazing resource that would be useful for any group doing similar activities related to teaching young women to sew. They recently made the Pink Chalk Studio Water Bottle Carrier project using Robert Kaufman’s 2009 GS Collection.
- And finally, a very interesting contest called The Jelly Roll ‘Dream’ Challenge. It’s an international competition to find quilt designs that make the best and most creative use of one Jelly Roll. 12 winners will have their quilt featured in a book to be published by David & Charles. The 3 top winners will be awarded with Janome sewing machines!
Have a fabulously creative weekend!

Nice! I can’t wait to see what people create with the jelly rolls – just used my first one ever for the Fat Quarterly sew along and I loved it.
the jelly roll dream challenge does seem interesting, i’m heading over there to check out more info. thanks!
WoW! this is one resource-full blog post!
thank you! loving these opps for goodness…
Those photos on Victoria’s site of our quilts being distributed is wonderful!!
I agree that this season of giving should include quilts also. I won some blocks in a block lotto and have put them together to make a quilt for a new veterans center here in town. Kathie L in Allentown
I love making quilts for charity – our church’s quilt ministry! We’ve made and given away 54 quilts so far this year, and are still going strong! It feels good to do good!!
Sewing has pulled women together in service for many years. So nice to see the tradition continue – with yummy new fabrics!
I was thinking the same thing, how quilting has joined so many people together and people who quilt can reach so far. It is amazing when you think about it.
So inspiring, thanks for sharing these links. Hope you are have a wonderful weekend.
Thanks for the great links! I am going to look into opportunities our local girl guides to see if I can help ‘sew the love’!
Love the idea of that Jelly Roll dream challenge. I’m not one to particularly enjoy the cutting stage of making a quilt so Jelly Rolls are my friend
Can’t wait to see what people do with them.
Wow wish i had the time and rolls to take place in this contest…sounds fun.
The jelly roll challenge sounds like it would be fun.
I absolutely agree that sewing & quilting foster community. I was just discussing this with my sweetheart, describing how every time I enter a quilt shop I am drawn into a conversation and immediately feel at home.
A BIG WOW!
The bumble beans quilt gather project is wonderful.. !I’m sitting here feeling very humble. But also inspired.. What a wonderful lady!
I have the “100 Quilts” set up on my blog as well as am participating in donations. I always make sure there is at least one quilt a month to go to Hospice, local battered women’s housing, and send to Iraq as our local Dr. is stationed in hospital treating many children. I have the Jelly Roll Challenge marked with sketches/notes going into my notebook – will do up samples after the holidays.
I just realized that I never said thank you for posting about 100 Quilts for Christmas. Thank you!
I’ve been super impressed with the sewing community and it’s desire to give to others. I am going to be joining another one called Quilt Hope In (all proceeds from quilt sales helps women and children in Haiti).
I just realized that I never said thank you for posting about 100 Quilts for Christmas.
