Shea from The Empty Bobbin is a blogging friend of mine. Look at this awesome picture she took! I checked her post history to find out when she first started her blog because I feel like I’ve been following her creative journey forever. Her first post was July 2007. And guess who commented on her first post? Me. That gave me a smile. Sometimes there’s just that internet kismet and you know immediately that you like that person by the work they create and share and their voice that speaks so clearly from the keyboard.
She invited two friends and her mom over for a Mail Sack Party. I felt so joyful inside reading her post and looking at the images that captured the day. A bit misty eyed too. I have a very difficult time expressing in words how I feel about seeing the things that other people create using a pattern I’ve written. It has everything to do with being connected in some teeny, tiny way to the happiness and creative energy they release into the universe when making their project. Tingles I tell you!
The world of sewing never ceases to surprise me with the gifts it brings.
Thank you Shea!

I just ordered my pattern. I hope I can do it, I have never sewn a zipper before.
You’re going to love the technique Yvette! I know you’ll be successful with it. I like to use Avery Permanent Glue Stik that I buy at Rite Aid.
Yvette…this bag was my very FIRST sewing project EVER! Although I had lots of help from the experts:) If I can do it, you can do it! Have fun!
What beautiful work they did. All those bags are just wonderful!
I’m thinking the same thing Elaine, I have some of that Royal Blue Anna Maria Good Folks in my stash, love, love, love how it looks on a Mail Sack.
passing it on, Kathy…..
that is what it is all about – and YOU do it so well in SOOOooooo many ways.
love you xo
goodness I miss you Jone! xoxo
I clearly remember the moment I saw your comment, too! I remember thinking, “Awesome! I am not just talking to myself!” I am so happy that we got to show you our fantastic day. Talking, laughing, sewing and creating- complete with a toddler and a baby to keep things interesting. I think the moment when Eleanor climbed up and sat next to my mom, asking to sew, will be seared into my memory forever. Start ‘em young, I say!
My mom and I took the bags to our KC modern quilt guild meeting tonight and I think we may have ‘sold’ a few copies of the pattern.
Jacquie and I were discussing tonight- no one writes a pattern better than you. Hands down! Well done!
thank you my friend
OMG – I love that bag. Seriously. Especially that orange-y floral with the Cosmo Cricket – adore!
That one is my bag:) Thanks Megan. I love it too! I’ve had SO many people ask me about it. One woman stopped me in a book store, asked to take a picture, and then wrote down Kathy’s web address so she could order the pattern!
Thanks for sharing that Cali!
Aww, that was a very nice post, and those bags are all gorgeous!
So lovely. You are such a sweetie, Kathy. Hope your weekend is wonder filled! ox
oooh, they are all so pretty! I’ve made this bag out of Lila Tuller fabric! it’s wonderful!
I have had this pattern for a year or two, and this post forced me to pull it out again! I really want the kids version ( I put too much in my purse as it is), but must find the ” perfect” fabric from my stash…hmmmm.
What an inspiration to get sewing again after this hot summer! I love the website and photos from their day of bag sewing! Thanks for sharing, Kathy!
That must be a nice feeling. The world is a much smaller and nicer place when you connect and make friends around common interests. I’d love to have some of my patterns published. I’m just not able to take it to the publishing phase. I have plenty of sketches that I use to make stuff with, but nothing available to sell.
small world isn’t it! this has always been my favorite bag. after seeing these i’m thinking i need to break down and take a day and make one!
What fun!
I really like the trim, too. Will you pass along to us, too, how it was done?
I got to see Shea’s bag in person at KCMQG. She was singing your praises and telling everybody how easy the bag is to make. I think I’ll have to give it a try, I love the lines of the bag.
These are great. I would love to make one.
Kathy!!!
Can I tell you that just LOVE LOVE your blog, your site, and THIS PATTERN!! I’ve been looking for one to make for myself and now I’m inspired to make some more for mother’s day gift!!! I am a fairly new sewer and I hope I can tackle this bag!!
Your friend that had the party mentioned in her blog that she added material between the yoke and bag – do you have any tips on how I can do this?
THANKS so much for sharing your beautiful patterns and talent with us!!
Melissa
