Finish up one quilting bee and start another. I like new beginnings.
I signed on to another virtual quilting bee several months ago not recording the begin dates or other specifics of participating. Fortuitously enough, as soon as I sent out the blocks from my original bee I received the first set of fabrics from the new group.
Katie Jump Rope meets triangles. Love the fabric, love the theme. Make note to self to take more care in the design stage. I had several ideas and ultimately decided on Flying Geese in a Dutchman’s Puzzle layout. Finished block size 12.5 inches. I made 2″ x 4″ Flying Geese. Hmmm, no the math does not work on that one.
I realized the math didn’t work when I looked at this:

and knew it wasn’t a 12″ block.
One of the things I LOVE about making quilts is that you’re never without options. Those little tiny pieces can become new things when they decide they don’t want to be what you first thought they should. I took stock of what I had. Added. Re-arranged. Did it again. And came up with this:

And I’m absolutely loving this block. Waaaayyyy more than the original idea. I like the color play. I like how I didn’t have enough Orange or Brown fabrics. I learn something new with every project. Even when I think I know what I’m doing I get surprised. A little gift of ‘hey, that’s pretty cool and by the way you don’t know everything smarty pants’ pops out and dances across the table. Good, clean fun I tell you.
These are the lovely gals participating in the Busy Bees (along with their Flickr icons since I did a little cut and paste):
Angela – Tweedledeedesigns – cuttopieces
Kate – One Flew Over – One Flew Over
Amber – One ShaBby ChiCk – one shabby chick
Tacha – hanies – hanies quilts
Brioni – flossyblossy – flossyblossy
Malka – stitchindye – stichindye
Megan – {philistine made} 100% Philistine Made
Lucinda – lucyellen06 – september bird
Penny – sewtakeahike – sewtakeahike
Cherri – cherry house quilts – Cherry House Quilts
Katy -imagingermonkey – imagingermonkey
Jo -sparklygreenknickers – sparkly green knickers
I’m looking forward to lots more surprises!

Love your flying geese block!
Thanks for the inspiration. I still have some KJR fabrics waiting for the right project!

Love Katie Jump Rope! Fantastic block. Reminds me that I have a Katie Jump Rope UFO I really need to finish.
I love your background color choice, your block looks great!
Angela sent the Kona Cotton Khaki for the background. I’m really liking how it plays off the Katie Jump Rope.
Thanks for sharing your oops moment. It always good to know I’m not the only smarty pants out here. By the way, your block makes me want to try this. The color play is exciting.
Oh what a wonderful block. I have some KJR hanging around too!
Your block turned out great! It looks like a fun group of people for the bee too.
I am currently debating how I want to use my KJR fabrics. I’m ready to do something with them. Love your block!
The block looks great! I like the colours and the fabrics a lot and the layout works really well! For some reason flying geese is next on my patchwork list as well! It’s so versatile, simple and effective!
very nice! That’s a talented bee group – I look forward to seeing your quilts come together!
It looks amazing – I am SO excited to be in a Bee with you and all those talented ladies….
So fun! I’ve never done a virtual bee, but it sounds really fun. I love your second idea more, also.

I absolutely LOVE your quilting style. So chic!
Love your block Kathy and I am so pleased to hear that I am not alone when it comes to math and flying geese!
Super wonderful!
I love this square! The Katie Jump Rope is one of my favorite fabric collections.
I am soooo glad that you are having so much fun, my friend!!!!!
It is “ooozing” from your blog – seriously!
And, may I say that I giggle when I read what you write…just like being right there next to you……
…sigh…….we have GOT to find a time to get together again…..don’t know when….
what are your plans this summer?
Your block is fantastic! Simple and charming…..
xo
I adore the block that you made for me Kathy! And I love seeing the process that you went through to get it. I definitely have done similar things myself before. And you’re right…sometimes what comes out in the end is even better than what you had originally planned. Can’t wait to see all the blocks together!
And I just love how your block turned out Kathy. Thank you for sharing your process. Seeing the process of making a block or other project is always so inspiring and helpful!
You worked these blocks out beautifully! Very pretty!
Hey, Kathy!
I just now got around to reading your blog for May (and April)…. Thank you for always being so honest!
For one reason or another I haven’t even been able to get to my machines since the first week or so of May. I’m feeling kind of down on myself since we’d had two babies born into the family recently, and I haven’t been able to finish their “intended” quilts – let alone get them mailed or delivered.
And I didn’t get anything made for two grandchildren’s birthdays this month… Life gets in the way sometimes… But I’m hopeful I’ll be able to get back to it soon! You are an inspiration! I so much appreciate your honesty as well as your creativity and skills! Keep it up!
