Greg’s Christmas gift finally has a back!
He picked out Squares Black from the Mingle collection by Monaluna, gorgeous choice and very manly.
The design is City Park by Cherry House Quilts. I absolutely LOVE this pattern. The layout is very clever. There are 6 unique blocks that keep the piecing fun. They go together like a puzzle resulting in a final design that creates visual interest while being mathematically balanced in scale. The blocks create a secondary design of the black squares in multiple sizes. The finished quilt size is 63″ x 72″.

The pattern uses 19 different Kona cotton solids. I attempted to make it exactly like the cover quilt. Several colors are now discontinued and substitutes were used. The final block layout diagram is in color but it does not contain a key identifying which colors are which. This confused me a bit, ultimately I put the main blocks in place that were obvious and winged it on how the remaining colors were distributed. Because so many similar colors are used it would have looked great no matter how they were placed.
In terms of difficulty, I would say it is easy to intermediate. I’m a bit OCD about the accuracy of intersecting seams (there are quite a few where the secondary black squares are getting formed at the intersection of multiple blocks). I used my seam ripper whenever things didn’t line up. I pressed all my seams open when piecing the blocks. I was thankful I’d done this once I got to the point of joining the final blocks. There is no way to know in advance how each block is going to get oriented so pressing the seams to one side might leave you trying to line up blocks where both seams were pressed in the same direction creating a lot of bulk.
I did press my seams to one side when joining the finished blocks into rows: even rows to one side, odd rows in the opposite direction. The interlocking seams made joining the rows much easier.
The top and backing are headed off to visit my long arm guru Marybeth O’Halloran at White Lotus Quilting. That way Greg can be napping under it before next Christmas.

Just beautiful!! I love it.
I made this quilt for my 14 year old grandson for christmas and he loved it. I wanted something alittle more “grown up” for him. It was a little tricky getting it together though! I love the backing you used. I am making “City Scapes” for my other grandson for his 14th birthday. Looking forward to that.
I’m putting the quilttop of City Park quilt together as we speak. Thanks for the tip to press the seams open! It’s very difficult to have them lined up when not doing so. Love the pattern, well… all patterns by Cherryhouse are among my favorites! I bought all the Kona cotton colours as described in the pattern 2 years ago, but there are numerous possibilities and I would love to try another one with bold prints, some time in the future!
Wow – that is going to be gorgeous – and I love the fabric you chose for the back. All solid quilts are fun to do – I’m thinking about making another one soon.
Very cool, modern graphic look, like a modern take on Amish quilts. I’d like to see your version after quilting. What color thread will you use for the quilting?
Wow! That’s lovely!! Greg is a very lucky guy, but then we already knew that because he has YOU for a wonderful wife! xoxo
Gorgeous quilt front, I have been admiring that pattern for some time. Can’t wait to see the completed quilt. ox Melanie
Wow, I’d never guess there were 19 different fabrics in this quilt, but the result is VERY Beautiful!
It’s great. Love the backing fabric.
Ooooh…very nice! That’s lovely.
I have this pattern! (I think I got it from you). It is so very striking. I thought of my sons when I ordered it. It is a very masculine-looking quilt. Hmmmmm, I wonder if my boys would appreciate all the intricasies of the pattern………………lol. I love mingle, and that black and white is to die for. Greg is a lucky man!
I bought the same pattern to make a quilt for my son, and I want to try to make it fairly close to the original, too. It’s such a beautiful quilt and so great for a guy. Thanks for the tips/info on how it went together for you.

I adore this quilt.
Lucky Greg – I LOVE this quilt Kathy! Great choice for the backing too!
I have been looking at this pattern in your shop – I so love the colors. Can’t wait to see the final product!
It doesn’t look like much unquilted (IMO quilt tops rarely do) but the finished one is just gorgeous! I can’t wait to see yours all done.
