Haiti Fundraising Efforts in the Crafting Community

As promised, here’s a round up of some additional Haiti fund raising efforts going on in the crafting world:

  • The absolutely gorgeous quilts in the photo are the work of Beth Novak of Modern Jax. She’s holding a silent blog auction that runs through Friday, January 29. Donations are to be made by the high bidder to either Partners in Health or Doctors Without Borders. My inner CPA loves the idea of the bidder receiving the tax deduction!
  • The Fat Quarter Shop has 22 quilts plus additional handmade goods up for auction on their Jolly Jabber blog. The line-up features some very well known designers including Joanna Figueroa of Fig Tree Quilts, Bari J., Me and My Sister Designs, and many more talented and generous contributors. Bidding is open through noon CST on Friday, January 29. They also are asking the high bidder to make their donation directly to one of 5 charities.
  • Haiti By Hand is an Etsy shop showcasing handcrafted pieces created by a group of artisans in Despinos and Croix de Bouquet, Haiti. Since the earthquake, the Etsy shop is hosting a wide community of artisans who have donated their work to be sold with all sales going directly to Haiti By Hand. You can find out additional information on donating items to the shop on the Haiti by Hand blog.
  • Jill of John Met Betty, one of my RLFs (Real Life Friends, Caitlin taught me that one last week!) is donating 50% of her Etsy sales to the Red Cross.
  • Hearts for Haiti is an Etsy collective of items donated from hundreds of Etsy shops to raise money to rebuild Haiti. 100% of the proceeds from this shop (minus Etsy fees and Paypal fees) go directly to Doctors Without Borders.

I’ve received several e-mails asking about efforts to send actual quilts to Haiti. I will continue to investigate these opportunities. They will certainly take shape in the months to come. Right now organizations doing work there need our money to provide food and medical care.

I continue to read Tara Livesay’s and Jen Halverson’s blogs daily. Goodness, the work these two women and their colleagues are doing in Haiti is absolutely unbelievable! The difference between what I see on TV and what I’m reading in first hand blog accounts from the front lines shines a glaring light on how filtered the news really is (yes, I knew that, but I mean way beyond what I thought already!). OK, need to stay away from the politics now!

I’ve received quite a few e-mails this week (I also negotiated and signed a commercial lease, added Guest Check Out to the shop, pitched my patterns to a new distributor, trained a new employee and shipped a record number of orders out the door), I know I’m losing things here and there. If I’ve overlooked something I should have included in this post please add it along with links to the comments. Thank you! Love to all of you doing your amazing work here and in Haiti.

Commercial lease? Are you moving to a larger space and/or opening a storefront?

The Project Linus people are amazing. I went by one of their weekly gatherings in Pasadena, CA two weeks ago to drop off a baby quilt to go to Haiti – they had already surpassed our area’s contribution of 400 towards the 10,000 quilt challenge, and were working on another shipment of 400. There were stacks and stacks of quilts in the room!
