There is a very funny story related to how I got this book at Quilt Market. My mom doesn’t sew but thoroughly enjoyed walking the show floor. She viewed the experience through a lens that captured opportunities I never would have spotted.

There was a line of people waiting to meet Rebecca Yaker and Patricia Hoskins. They were there to promote and sign their new book One-Yard Wonders. The cover looked very interesting and my mom decided to stand in line to purchase a copy for a friend of hers. By the time we got to the front of the line I decided I would get a signed copy to give away on the blog. Heck, at wholesale prices we’d be getting a very good deal!

So we get to the front and have the pleasure of meeting and chatting with these two very vibrant and lovely ladies. So excited to be there talking about their book. Their energy and enthusiasm was truly infectious and a joy to experience.

My Mom pulls out a very large denomination bill to pay for the books and everyone laughs. They’re free! Yes, the publisher was sponsoring the giveaway (I guess this is true with all book signings at Quilt Market, who knew!). There was a photographer with the authors and he insisted on taking some photos with my mom trying to give them money and Rebecca and Patricia making very exaggerated gestures refusing to take any! We had such a good laugh over this.

I ended up reading this book cover to cover. Diving into the detail on projects that caught my eye. Stepping through each line of the instructions. It’s extremely well edited, illustrated, and complete.

Above is a great example of the level of detail contained in the book. I’m a stickler for accuracy and illustrations and I think this book does an excellent job of delivering on both counts.

The designs come from a wide array of talented designers including projects by Patricia and Rebecca. I spotted several friends in the mix including Elizabeth Hartman of Oh Fransson (Elizabeth’s downloadable patterns are available in the shop), Jhoanna Monte Aranez of One Red Robin (patterns also available in the shop), June Gilbank of Planet June, Michele Chisholm of Calico Daisy, and Regina Lord of Creative Kismet. Yay for all the talented designers featured in the book.
I would have enjoyed reading more about the inspiration for a book on making things with only one yard of fabric and how the authors selected the projects to include. My guess is this content may be sitting on the cutting room floor due to page budget cuts. It’s quite a volume of content (101 projects) in 302 spiral bound pages.
The projects are organized by Dwell Redux, Household Affairs, Craft Organization, On the Go, From Head to Toe (clothing and accessories), Carry It All, Outfit Your Small Wonder, Accessorize Your Little One, Playtime and Your Furry Friends. Truly a project for every occasion.

The idea of creating something from one of yard fabric is a brilliant platform for a book. A resource that can sit at the ready when the urge to create is strong. We all have those one yard cuts in our stash waiting for their opportunity to shine. One-Yard Wonders is a fabulous collection of clever designs presented in a beautiful layout sure to inspire your creative making.

I’m giving away one signed copy of One-Yard Wonders. I’m also giving away 3 fat quarter sets from Tanya Whelan’s gorgeous new collection Dolce to 3 different winners. Leave a comment sharing a project you’re making for gifts or holiday decorations. I’ll draw a winner on Monday morning.

Oh my, so many projects! We’ll see how many I get to. Have completed some moebius scarves and a jar of knit olives and I’m working on new stockings and a matching tree skirt since our family has a new member this year with the birth of my lil’ Lincoln in August. Still have aprons to make, and placemats. Gonna be a busy week!
Very nice book! I bought one for my daughter for christmas. Thinking i could borrow it from her when i wanted to make something, then remembered she’s a 100 miles from me. So here i am try to win one for myself. Finished a reindeer advent calendar monday, an angel wallhanging yesterday and i’m stalling starting the santa pillow by checking out your blog.
Thanks for the review! I put this book on my Amazon wish list but will now purchase it for sure. I think it’s a great idea and I’m glad to hear it’s well executed.
For holiday sewing madness, I decided to make my sister-in-law a handbag. I’m, ahem, learning a lot as I go.
i’m stitching up a water bottle holder for my marathon-ing sis-in-law. hopefully she does not subscribe to your comments, or i have just ruined the surprise.
I would adore this book…I have so many ’1-yards’ of fabric that need to be used.
For Christmas gifts this year, I made candy wreaths, snowman ornaments, baby bags, “church” bags, tree skirts, Christ “advent calendar” ornaments…..
I’ve been interested in this book since the lady at “www.sharonsews.blogspot.com” has been sewing up projects from it. Both the book and the fabric look great. This Christmas I’ve made a Rice Therapy Bag (SewMamaSew tutorial), and have plans to crochet a scarf (which may end up being a late gift!). I also made Christmas dish towel aprons for six friends.
Thank’s for the review! I’m putting the book and fabric on my wishlist. I started dishtowels and potholders for my 3 favorite girls. Still working on my tree skirt…a clutch…a purse and pillows.
I am making some Ruby dolls and bags to put them in, gift bags for presents, and a couple of the Melly and Me patterns.
there is always time to sneak in another project before the 25th isn’t there?! a pair of mittlets for a friend with breast cancer is on my needles, a hat for a niece is in the queue, felted wool snowflake ornaments will go to friends, and a lovely cabled throw for my daughter (started six years ago) is waiting for the paper and bow. one-yard projects? bring them on!
I made 7 pairs of flannel PJ pants for all the women and girls in my family. The guys get baked goods and homemade jelly, jam and apple butter–one size fits all.
I’m still planning on making Cosmetic-type bags for all the ladies to put in their purses so when they change purses they just have to transfer the little bag. I’ll go to the dollar store and fill them with nail clippers, emory boards, little calculators, combs and other stuff.
Of course I’m whipping up more quilts for etsy out of Urban Bloom flannel by RJR.
Oh, yes, I also made all my own Christmas cards by sewing little fabric trees onto homemade paper and gluing them onto the cards.
Whew. Otherwise, have just been napping and growing old.
Best wishes, Linda.
i’ve had this book on my christmas list for months. thank you for the preview. the fabric is gorgeous.
I’m planning/hoping to make some fabric paper chains to decorate living room. This sounds like a great book!
Ooh, this book has been on my mental wish list. I am making mini (abt 3″x5″) tree quilts (pieced ala Gwen Marston) as ornaments for all my friends and family as gifts…..I’ve been giving different sets of homemade ornaments as my only gift for the past 4 years. It cuts down on a lot of holiday shopping and bill-paying stress, and everyone loves that they are homemade and unique.
For Christmas gifts, I’m making a Summerhouse Pillow for my sister Mary in her favorite colors (pattern by Alicia Poulson of Posie Gets Cosy), and a knitted bracelet with beads for my sister Sarah (free MaryElla pattern from knitty.com). Love this site and seeing beautiful creations!
I am busy making afghans and hot pack buddies for the kids in my life. You have a great site! THanks for sharing your information. I will be back!!
The book looks fabulous! I am making corduroy jumpers for my two little granddaughters using the Boden big button dress as my inspiration.
I am finishing up the binding on a quilt for a good friend, have made homemade vanilla for various other friends and am hoping to finish a tree skirt for my sister. Next year I hope to do much more!
almost done with the messanger bags for my sisters, then on to about a million drawstring gift bags!
I’m in denial that Christmas is so soon. Instead of starting the five aprons that I’ve decided to make for various kids in my life, I’m instead trying to finish (I’m halfway through the binding!) a quilt for a baby who was born in October. But isn’t that how crafting goes–projects piling up in one’s mind? Maybe one yard projects would help me craft quicker. The fabrics are beautiful!
oh my gosh…. love the book so much.
I am making my 7 grandbabies pillowcases to have for Christmas Eve.. I am so excited.
I actually finished Christmas placemats and potholders to give as pre-Christmas gifts at Thanksgiving. Now just have to finish knitting a bunch of socks. I think everyone would like to have both. I’ve got 3 different singles done. I’m giving up on the rest of my ideas and starting the list for next year already.
I’m working on a 3 tier skirt for my eldest daughter. It’s taking longer than I thought it would!
great give-away and very nice Mom-story
right now i am sewing some pillowcases as gifts for a dear friend and then i am done with it. and can go on sewing other stuff right away..
I am working on a Christmas Table Runner and Christimas Pillow. The Table runner only needs to be binded..almost there.
Oh, this book looks so cool, so often I buy just one yard of a fabric just because I have to have it! I’m making Christmas ornaments as gifts and after seeing Lesley’s post, I’m now going to make these birds http://www.spoolsewing.com/blog/2008/05/16/bird-mobile/
(thanks, Lesley, for the link!)
I am making a quilt for one of my daughters, hot pads are in the works and scanning through the pictures in the one yard wonder book I want to make aprons too! Thanks for the opportunity to win and I also love the fabrics I ordered from you for the quilt that is in the works….my daughter loves the colors and had fun picking them from your shop.
I’m making some little fabric wallets for holding several gift cards; my 4-year-old granddaughter loves to have gift cards and other “credit” cards such as Sonic cards and Dairy Queen cards, so I’m making hers out of some of the wonderful fabrics I’ve collected from Pink Chalk Fabrics over the last several months. It will hold a “Fancy Nancy” gift card for her favorite outing–Barnes and Noble bookstore!
What a great idea for a book! One of the many things I’m working on is a quilt for my granddaughter that combines some patchwork blocks and some embroidered blocks.
Ooh, this book looks scruptious, just what I need, inspiration to start yet another project before I finish the all the other ones! Seriously it looks like it has some great ideas and thanks for giving it a review because you just never know when you see the titles if they are worth buying or not.
I am working on a couple of water bottle carriers, from your pink chalk pattern/tutorial of course. I have promised some to a few clients as they have admired the one I use myself. Perhaps at this time of year they will be gifted along with a bottle of wine rather than a bottle of water. ..and a grab bag, mug bag, birdie from the quilt market magazine, finishing a quilt for a wedding (that was last October), quilt for a friends 50th on 2 January, tie dying project with my daughter, gosh how many days are there left before xmas?
I would love to have this book ~ How fun:) I’m working on several gifts, homespun aprons from dish towels, eyeglass catcher, and the most of all I finished an advent calendar out of felt for my 1st grandson who turned 3 in August. What a fun gift to make and he loves it! Plus I purchased micro hot wheels to go in some of the pockets (he loves cars and trucks) and his mom says he is loving the tree! This book would be an awesome inspiration for after the 1st of the year quilting ideas.

Wow! These comments give me some great new ideas! For the present, I’ve personalized a plain cooking mitten (with the rag word CHEF), made a mini desktop Xmas tree (with a pinecone, paint & beads), sewn a lavender sachet with fabric from the South of France (more to come…) & started preparing a personalized 2010 calendar for Sweetie (1 classical music composer /month & modge-podged music score for the cover).
So I think I would deserve this book I’ve been dreaming of for weeks, but as Sweetie does not speak English & can’t order on the web… I hope I’ll be chosen!
Have a lovely day!
I’ve seen that book and have wanted to buy it! It looks like it has so many great ideas. My latest projects have been baby items (bibs, burp cloths, onesies) for my pregnant friends!
Excellent giveaway, thanks for the chance to win!
I am knee-deep in 2 quilts for gifts and making an ABC photo book for my 1 yr old neice….better get busy!!!
Beautiful fabrics, and the book is on my Christmas list! I’ve been working on some nativity wall hangings and some “spa” gifts, like eye masks and aroma therapy neck wraps.
Happy Holidays to you!
I’m working on a knitting bag for my Mom. Currently she carries her knitting project in a brown bag!
I’m making little jewelry organizer/travel totes for gifts this year. I would love to win fabric or that book! It looks fabulous and I love Tanya’s fabrics. xo, suzy
I wonder if I can buy a copy of that book. Since I am sure that I won’t be a winner.
I wish I was making something for the holidays! I want to make my daughter a new robe and we need a new tree skirt. Unfortunately, my husband and my mom both have health issues that require my free time. Next year definitely!
Next week I’m having a craft day with the youth program I work with and we’re making lots of cute crafts like felt scarves and magnets and ornaments!
I made cute little bags for all the girls in my family for presents. Right now I’m working on quilting my placemats that will make the Xmas table just pop! This book looks great and the fabric to die for!
I am knitting 2 dresses for my nieces and making bags for my older niece and nephew! fun!!!
Thanks!
I cannot even tell “where” I came across this book on line…somewhere and thought this is something I would buy myself after Christmas – after waiting to get the family their gifts.
I just finished a Christmas Lace Centerpiece for our dining room table, the centerpiece for when the family comes on Christmas Eve (which is something I truly look forward to from the bottom of my heart). I made our DD and DIL each their own wall quilt this year, with their individual favorite color schemes. Our GD got a long pink sherpa suede coat.
Merry Christmas.
i am making some dresden plate stars (learned recentely in a wonderful workshop given by Rita) to be hanged on the wall and small quilts!
What a great looking book. I am making a quilt for my brother and his family, fingerless gloves and scarf for one of my daughters, three teachers bags, two snap pouches for the teachers aids, one purse for one of my clients, and hoping to get a hat done for hubby. Yikes it’s scary when I see it all written down.
Definitely making: a couple of tote bags.
Hoping to make: aprons for my kids to wear for our holiday baking, and new pajamas for everyone!
Probably won’t get to: new dress for myself.
Looks like a lovely book! I’ve made pillowcases so far, and I’m planning on making some placemats.
I am in the process of making my 2 children, Girl and boy Christmas outfits. My daughter wants to wear her dress this wednesday to the morning at the ballet , The Nutcracker. I am also making fleece lounge pants to open Christmas morning and p.js for Christmas eve.
thanks for the fine book giveaway. I have been eyeing it on amazon and really wanting it.
julie
that would be some great book to have in my collection…..
I’m making coasters out of Christmas printed fabric and some nice Japanese linen! …This time they’ll be a little bigger than the usual ….one coaster is big enough for a big glass of cold milk and a big cookie! And for my daughter’s friend….some mini tote bags using some kawaii fabric.
thanks for having a giveaway.

Wow, wonderful give away! I have been working on aprons and jammies mostly. I also knit some fingerless gloves and made a flea market bag for a gift exchange. I was feeling pretty good about progress but now I’m starting to panic. There are always more things to create than time. As long as it’s fun (and it is) it’s all good!
