12/13/09: giveaway winners announced
There is a very funny story related to how I got this book at Quilt Market. My mom doesn’t sew but thoroughly enjoyed walking the show floor. She viewed the experience through a lens that captured opportunities I never would have spotted.

There was a line of people waiting to meet Rebecca Yaker and Patricia Hoskins. They were there to promote and sign their new book One-Yard Wonders. The cover looked very interesting and my mom decided to stand in line to purchase a copy for a friend of hers. By the time we got to the front of the line I decided I would get a signed copy to give away on the blog. Heck, at wholesale prices we’d be getting a very good deal!

So we get to the front and have the pleasure of meeting and chatting with these two very vibrant and lovely ladies. So excited to be there talking about their book. Their energy and enthusiasm was truly infectious and a joy to experience.

My Mom pulls out a very large denomination bill to pay for the books and everyone laughs. They’re free! Yes, the publisher was sponsoring the giveaway (I guess this is true with all book signings at Quilt Market, who knew!). There was a photographer with the authors and he insisted on taking some photos with my mom trying to give them money and Rebecca and Patricia making very exaggerated gestures refusing to take any! We had such a good laugh over this.

I ended up reading this book cover to cover. Diving into the detail on projects that caught my eye. Stepping through each line of the instructions. It’s extremely well edited, illustrated, and complete.

Above is a great example of the level of detail contained in the book. I’m a stickler for accuracy and illustrations and I think this book does an excellent job of delivering on both counts.

The designs come from a wide array of talented designers including projects by Patricia and Rebecca. I spotted several friends in the mix including Elizabeth Hartman of Oh Fransson (Elizabeth’s downloadable patterns are available in the shop), Jhoanna Monte Aranez of One Red Robin (patterns also available in the shop), June Gilbank of Planet June, Michele Chisholm of Calico Daisy, and Regina Lord of Creative Kismet. Yay for all the talented designers featured in the book.
I would have enjoyed reading more about the inspiration for a book on making things with only one yard of fabric and how the authors selected the projects to include. My guess is this content may be sitting on the cutting room floor due to page budget cuts. It’s quite a volume of content (101 projects) in 302 spiral bound pages.
The projects are organized by Dwell Redux, Household Affairs, Craft Organization, On the Go, From Head to Toe (clothing and accessories), Carry It All, Outfit Your Small Wonder, Accessorize Your Little One, Playtime and Your Furry Friends. Truly a project for every occasion.

The idea of creating something from one of yard fabric is a brilliant platform for a book. A resource that can sit at the ready when the urge to create is strong. We all have those one yard cuts in our stash waiting for their opportunity to shine. One-Yard Wonders is a fabulous collection of clever designs presented in a beautiful layout sure to inspire your creative making.

I’m giving away one signed copy of One-Yard Wonders. I’m also giving away 3 fat quarter sets from Tanya Whelan’s gorgeous new collection Dolce to 3 different winners. Leave a comment sharing a project you’re making for gifts or holiday decorations. I’ll draw a winner on Monday morning.

Ah, unfortunately I cannot share a project I make – there are no projects :/
I mean: There WOULD be, but I CAN’T.
No possibility to sew properly or to knit something with this damn wrist and the splint. So I buy the presents and use the traditional decorations only. No additions.
But – fingers crossed – I’ll be able to start anew Mid-January.
I love give aways and the book looks like it is full of fun projects! I am working on lap quilts for my mother and father for Christmas, one is almost finished and the other is yet to be started.
I am hoping Santa brings me an early Christmas present (from Janome) to help me finish.
I am working on making a red and white little quilt for our entry way table and a red and white quilt to use as the tree skirt, yes the tree skirt!
it will be 75 x 85 and then the rest of the year it will be folded up and hang on my quilt ladder or a shelf.
I wanted to make a yo yo garland for the tree but well not enough hours in the day! maybe next year
thanks for a great giveaway and loved the story on how you were able to get this book, one your mom and you will be telling for years to come I bet!
Kathie
I am working on a play quilt for my 1 year old son for Christmas. The top is done, just need to get it quilted and bound!
I’m making fabric coasters for some friends, I’m knitting a scarf for my husband and I’m sewing a christmas quilt for our home! I’ve seen so much about this book, I’d love to make stuff from it!!
So far I’ve just been trying to finish up orders for our shop. I’m hoping to make a few little gifts though for family. My son has managed to make his ornaments already though!
Oh man, this book sounds great for the holidays, since I try to do at least one stocking-stuffer type gift for everyone. Last year I made lined zippered pouches (about 5×7) which were a HUGE hit. This year I’m doing something similar, but I’m making a pyramid zipped purse (http://www.livingcreatively.com.au/projects/create_now_project.php?v=69). I am also making box bag dop kits for the men in my family (as primary gifts) and hex-frame clutch purses for the women.
I also made a totally fabulous tree skirt from August Fields Full Bloom Orange (cut circle of fabric, cut out center, make a slit, and attached fuschia binding on all edges). I was going to make it reversible, but I figured that was kind of excessive for something that only comes out once a year. Instead, I will probably make another smaller skirt out of the other fabric I bought, and I can layer it right over the big one. Then I can enjoy both fabrics at the same time.
I like Kathie’s yoyo garland (above comment). That sounds like a great way to use up scraps!
I’ve been knitting wee mini-sweaters for tree ornaments to go along with gift cards for teachers, babysitters and such. Falling behind though!
i am making ruffle scarves for the women in the family. some will be knitted and others will be sewn out of jersey. thank you for the chance to win such a great book! i keep seeing so many great projects within it.
I pre-ordered the book form Amazon – there really are such great projects in there! I am making my sister a Pretty Ditty apron and a tote bag for my sister-in-law.
I’m making 5(!) wee wonderfuls dolls for my daughter, nieces and nephews for xmas. I’m going to have to figure out the boy dolls since the pattern is for girl dolls, and I haven’t sewn much since about 1980, but I’m plugging along and am really proud of myself for making something so cute! (Having a well written pattern helps!)
Looks like a great book with wonderful ideas for gifts.
That looks like a great book. I’m adding it to my wish list.
I thought I’d be making placemats for Christmas gifts, but as it turns out the placemats are languishing and I’m knitting up a storm of socks instead.
I’ve been eyeing this book for ages! (well it feels like ages in bloggy land) I just love the concept. And oh my, I haven’t seen that fabric before. Add it to my ever-expanding “list”. I’ve been making some awesome fabric baskets for my son’s teachers. I’m using some super cool fabric – Alexander Henry Good Earth – and they are Montessori teachers. It’s going to be awesome.
Wauw, such a fantastic giveaway! These days I’m not making any projects at all. Our American exchange student is soon going home and we have so much to do. Hope to make more of these hearts before Christmas

I’m making “chimera” bags with silk dupioni, and will put some goodie in the bag for a treat. Also rolling candles from beeswax, but not sewing them! I want to make some pillowcases from the silk/cotton Radiance, if I ever get to the end of Nutcracker costumes!
That book looks really great. I am going to be making a blanket for our sofa but no sewn Christmas projects.
I am trying to finish a winter wonky houses wall hanging for a Christmas gift. The book looks wonderful!
I have the book. It is awesome! First I think I’m going to make the green organizer you show above. There really are a TON of things to make. I love, love, love those fabrics………hint, hint (am I subtle enough?) Tell the random generator I like the colorway with the Orange in it!
I was hoping to see that picture of your mom trying to force money on the girls. I bet it’s cute. I can’t believe someone as talented as you has a mom who doesn’t sew! Of course, neither one of my girls sew. I guess you never know.
I’m making some napkins for Christmas presents, using Ashley’s pattern. Also doing some paper crafts. I don’t decorate much anymore because it’s so hard for me to get around. It makes me sad, though. I love to put up Christmas (and Halloween!) decorations.
What a great book! We’re doing “homemade Christmas” this year, and I’m in the process of making two aprons and a bedside organizer.
Lately I’ve been making organza flower pins as gifts. I stick them on hair pins, make them into headbands, or belts!
thanks you so much for a chance to win, but most of all thanks for giving me this wonderful book idea to tell my husband, I so want this! Thanks and Happy Holidays to everyone!!!!!!
Oh how I would love that book! For Christmas I’m trying to attempt to make too many things.
I’ve made pillow cases, quilts, dolls, a purse, a camera case, a dress, and just last night a shirt! On my still to do list is a purse for my mom, a man bag for my dad and a rice foot warmer for my brother. There’s more… too many to list!
Oh…the book looks wonderful…the fabrics as well! I’m making quilts, aprons, pincushions, and table runners for gifts for Christmas…I make most of my Christmas gifts and love it!
I am making different Christmas-gifts for my family and friends. Knitting a hat and a girls dress, sewing felt crowns for the smaller ones, crocheting lace on top of long woolen stockings…
Lots of small projects for the small hours of daylight in Norway this time of year.
I would love to win the book- it is on my wish-list! And ofcourse the fabric is always a precious gift!
this Christmas I am making a lot of the presents: a fabric basket for my mom and my mother-in-law, a wristlet for my sister, purse organizers for friends and a little purse for a friend’s 2 yr old girl!
I have been making Pocket Dolls. I am now up to 4 for this Christmas. It is a cute pattern and the little dresses are easy to take with me and sew where ever I go–unlike a bed sized quilt!
What a great book!! I just finished up making 3 aprons and 2 tablerunners. I think my home-made gifts are finished. I just need to get them wrapped. Yipee!!
Gorgeous fabric and gorgeous book. I made a bunch of wristlets for the women in my husband’s family using a wristlet tutorial from javajem. I am also hoping to finish a couple of mailbags using the patterned I ordered from here and to finish a throw I am making using a piece of batik printed fabric my mother in law got 30+ years ago from a friend from her peace corps time.
Oh I love those fabrics, will have to go check them out! And I have seen that book online and would love to have it. Great giveaway. I just finished some Christmas craftiness making fabric trees for the mantle. You can see them here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30303848@N06/4172100813/
Thanks!
Christmas stockings! There is a 2 year old grandson just old enough to appreciate a Christmas stocking. And while I’m at it, the daughter-in-law needs one on our mantel. Sooooo, a perfect reason to make a new set for our whole family!
That book looks wonderful!! I am making pillows with my kids’ handprints embroidered on them! They are going to all the grandmothers this year!
Wow! Fun giveaway! Lets see…I am making several knot bags as gifts for friends and family and then a few pillowcases and matching pants for the kiddos. I have also gotten addicted to vintage fabric panels so the kids will be receiving a stuffed monkey and stuffed ballerina doll as well. Very fun!!!
This book looks great! I am making some wallets and Christmas PJ’s this year.
For friends, I’m making Christmas-y versions of this bird:
http://www.spoolsewing.com/blog/2008/05/16/bird-mobile/
They won’t be sitting on a branch, but rather hung from a tree (I hope!). Many, many birds could be made from a single yard of fabric!
I am making sock monkeys for my kids, and little sewn notepads for my little girl to doodle in.
This book looks awesome!
I just finished up this adorable pencil roll and sketch book cover for my very artistic cousin. I made with it with the Jewel Tones by Michael Miller.
Wow Kathy, what a lovely giveaway! And really, I need more fabric like I need a hole in the head.
I have SO many projects on the go for gifts. Mostly knitting related so far (the fabric ones are almost all DONE!), but I am making two little fabric crowns for two little pink princesses.
Since I just moved to my first home (yay!), all of my crafty supplies are still in boxes. I did, however, have the foresight to send out 2 wholecloth quilts to a long-armer, and need to attach binding in the next week or so for Christmas gifts. (BTW – the quilts are from the County Fair panels that I got from you!)
I am making gift bags to put my gifts in. I’ve taught my son how to bead and he made a necklace for one grandma and a bracelet for the other. They are colorful and beautiful. He loves to sew too and I think he would love to help me make some of the things in this book!
I love the book and can’t wait to check it out. The fabric is just gorgeous!!
I have been making super hero capes and baby slings this Christmas for a few little ones in my life. It’s been a lot of fun! Thanks for the giveaway and Happy Holidays!
WOW! I would love the book AND the fat quarters! I am sewing bunting banners for my girls bedroom makeover! Also doing some photography projects. MERRY CHRISTMAS!
I’m currently working on some Avalon Blooms kalidescope blocks, that make a great take-along project. Also some embroidery using some wonderful Gwen Marston designs. They are in the same color family, so these two projects may actually be combined into one end product. Hope so.
I am making a cute flannel patchwork heating pad cover for my daughter who is away at college! Hopefully it’ll remind her of her mom when she’s feeling bad… I can’t wait to see all the “one yard” projects in the book! happy Holidays to you and your family!
awesome giveaway! i’ve eyed the book before and it looks like something everyone needs on their shelf.
this year for holiday gifts, i made 2 mini quilts, knitted a scarf, knitted a baby sweater (for the first time ever) and am making a lap quilt.

I’m making some quilted baby bibs for Christmas gifts this year. The One Yard Wonders book looks great.
