12/13/09: giveaway winners announced
There is a very funny story related to how I got this book at Quilt Market. My mom doesn’t sew but thoroughly enjoyed walking the show floor. She viewed the experience through a lens that captured opportunities I never would have spotted.

There was a line of people waiting to meet Rebecca Yaker and Patricia Hoskins. They were there to promote and sign their new book One-Yard Wonders. The cover looked very interesting and my mom decided to stand in line to purchase a copy for a friend of hers. By the time we got to the front of the line I decided I would get a signed copy to give away on the blog. Heck, at wholesale prices we’d be getting a very good deal!

So we get to the front and have the pleasure of meeting and chatting with these two very vibrant and lovely ladies. So excited to be there talking about their book. Their energy and enthusiasm was truly infectious and a joy to experience.

My Mom pulls out a very large denomination bill to pay for the books and everyone laughs. They’re free! Yes, the publisher was sponsoring the giveaway (I guess this is true with all book signings at Quilt Market, who knew!). There was a photographer with the authors and he insisted on taking some photos with my mom trying to give them money and Rebecca and Patricia making very exaggerated gestures refusing to take any! We had such a good laugh over this.

I ended up reading this book cover to cover. Diving into the detail on projects that caught my eye. Stepping through each line of the instructions. It’s extremely well edited, illustrated, and complete.

Above is a great example of the level of detail contained in the book. I’m a stickler for accuracy and illustrations and I think this book does an excellent job of delivering on both counts.

The designs come from a wide array of talented designers including projects by Patricia and Rebecca. I spotted several friends in the mix including Elizabeth Hartman of Oh Fransson (Elizabeth’s downloadable patterns are available in the shop), Jhoanna Monte Aranez of One Red Robin (patterns also available in the shop), June Gilbank of Planet June, Michele Chisholm of Calico Daisy, and Regina Lord of Creative Kismet. Yay for all the talented designers featured in the book.
I would have enjoyed reading more about the inspiration for a book on making things with only one yard of fabric and how the authors selected the projects to include. My guess is this content may be sitting on the cutting room floor due to page budget cuts. It’s quite a volume of content (101 projects) in 302 spiral bound pages.
The projects are organized by Dwell Redux, Household Affairs, Craft Organization, On the Go, From Head to Toe (clothing and accessories), Carry It All, Outfit Your Small Wonder, Accessorize Your Little One, Playtime and Your Furry Friends. Truly a project for every occasion.

The idea of creating something from one of yard fabric is a brilliant platform for a book. A resource that can sit at the ready when the urge to create is strong. We all have those one yard cuts in our stash waiting for their opportunity to shine. One-Yard Wonders is a fabulous collection of clever designs presented in a beautiful layout sure to inspire your creative making.

I’m giving away one signed copy of One-Yard Wonders. I’m also giving away 3 fat quarter sets from Tanya Whelan’s gorgeous new collection Dolce to 3 different winners. Leave a comment sharing a project you’re making for gifts or holiday decorations. I’ll draw a winner on Monday morning.

I have been busting out “traveling artshows” from Mr Monkeysuit…..perfect gift for a small person and only takes 1 1/2 fat quarters!
The photography and illustrations in this book look fantastic, and very clear for beginner sewers.
If I can figure out the zipper, I am making a zippered pouch containing a reusuable bag to save my mom using plastic bags when shopping. And for my sisters, I’ve made some exfoliating solid body butters and will be doing some simple drawstring pouches to gift them in.

I love seeing this new book for sewing in the same vein as One Skein projects. I love trying out new fabrics and yarns in small gift items so that I have the joy of figuring out a pattern and using a new resource – yarn and fabric love!
I am finishing up two aprons for my daughter and daughter in law for Christmas using a new pattern with a dropped waist. Both have fun in the kitchen, so I think they’ll enjoy them.
I loved your comments and hints from your experience at the indie show. Meeting one on one with your customers is the best experience!
My sewing is calling me….Thank you for your great blog!

I’m working on quilts for Christmas – but I’m wondering if I’m going to have time to finish the last quilt or if I’ll have to settle for a quilted throw.
I’m making a tea cozy to give away. They are so cute and they really keep your teapot warm for hours.
I am scurring to make the Christmas deadline with a repurposed cashmere baby hat from Stitch, the Anna Banana small runner and some ponytail bands. I am even hoping to fit in more but that is the story of my life!! I gotta quit that job!
I am making a doll quilt for the new doll bed Santa told me he is bringing my daughter. So excited to have an excuse to do it!
I’m making wine bottle holders to give with a bottle of our favorite wine to our good friends. Easy for them to reuse after the holidays!
What a great giveaway Kathy, such a good story about getting the book too. Your detail about the book makes me want it, I’m a stickler for detail as well!
My Christmas project is limited this year to creating a decoration from the Sheri Berry panel. I’ve cut out each of the 5″ squares on the panel, backing them with fabrics from the rest of that collection, and am hanging them from a string of ribbon. I’m not sure yet how it will come out but I’m having fun with it.
I’m making a quilt for my brother-in-law. The blocks are taped onto my design wall (umm… my living room wall) right now, waiting to be sewn together. I’m going to finish this for Christmas or else!
How awesome! I’m working on a quilt for my dad (was supposed to be a father’s day gift… oops!) And some shark printed jammies for my son and daughter. They often pretend to be sharks, and will have loads of fun imagining while wearing them. I’m also embroidering the christmas wishes from wee wonderfuls that I bought from Pink Chalk. Lots of fun and relaxing project! Feeling the crunch of running out of time, though and I’m still undecided on what to make for my grandmother. She taught me everything I know about crafting and hers will be the most important gift of all. Any ideas? Thank you so much for a chance to win. I’m crossing my fingers and will make good use of the goodies so generously up for grabs!

There are so many great ideas in this comment list! Will you post it again in August for inspiration for next Christmas? As a new quilter, I’ve made lap quilts for four recipients this Christmas, and I’m very proud of my accomplishment!
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all!
I’m working on the squirrel tea cozy from the cover of Zakka Sewing and a sideways knit scarf from the new One More Skein. Of course I’m working on a dozen other things but those are the two that MUST be ready for the 25th!
What a lovely pile of goodies you’re giving away. Thanks for the chance!
I love the idea of a free book. I just finished a black and white lap quilt. It was supposed to be a star pattern, but the directions were not all that clear, and that means that the patterns did not look that good together. So I played with the finished blocks and came out with a pinwheel pattern that is absolutely stunning. It is intended as a holiday gift. I will have a hard time parting with this one.
Good Day. I finished making Oh Frannson’s wristlets for my 5 nieces just last week. Each gets one larger and one smaller wristlet in Amy Butler fabric. I hope that the presents are well loved and well used. Happy Holidays. Tanya
I made 3 fleece scarves for my nephews at my quilt group yesterday and have 2 fabric baskets yet on my list along with a pieced border to put on a quilt. Not to mention at least 4 kinds of cookies and peppermint marshmallows to make, and fudge of course. I think sleep is over-rated, don’t you.
I’ve been waiting to get my hands on the One Yard Wonder book since I first saw it online. I would love to win one.
What a fabulous giveaway! I’ve been working on quilts for my children this year. I hope that I can get them finished in time
Thanks for entering me.
I have made some Christmas stockings and little wallets for gifts. I’m hoping to get a bag made for my daughter and perhaps a Christmas dress for my grandaughter
Oh my gosh I’m so excited about this giveaway!
For Christmas this year I’ve made my two nieces each a little sundress, my dad is getting a simple cotton apron (a little boring but his request), I’m making a teepee for one of my friends kids – a little boy who arrived in Australia only 3 months ago to live with his adoptive family and advent calendars for two friends. Wow – I’d better get on with things!
Thanks so much for the giveaway! It is absolutely beautiful fabric!
Wow! What a wonderful giveaway! I’m finishing off two quilts and two wall hangings for Christmas presents . . . my sewing room has been a lot like Santa’s workshop lately. Managed to sneak in a little gift for myself also – made a hot iron cover for all the workshops I go to. It always seemed like the iron was always too hot when we were packing up for home – this will solve my problem. Busy time of year for everyone . . . I love it! – Marlene
I’m busy making cool summer sundresses for my daughters in my part of the hot, sticky world that is Brisbane (Australia) at the moment! Love, love, love Tanya’s new line! Great giveaway!
I’m making aprons for my 6 nieces – but have to get started yet! Thanks for such a perfect giveaway
I am making a crib set (baby blanket, bumpers, & crib skirt) for my sister who is having her first child. It will also be my first niece/nephew so it is an exciting time and I am so glad to have a child to craft for!
Oh, I’ve had my eye on that book! Thanks for the review — I’m going to add it to my wish list now. I’m making a ton of things for Christmas — an apron, a lunch tote with napkins, a couple purses, pajamas… Today I whipped up some pencil cases and tucked super cute Japanese erasers inside.
Lovely giveaway – thanks for all the sharing that you do on this site! Christmas includes a small camera case, baby knits, cookies, mini-cakes & breads, some hats and mitts – IF I can get it all done on time. Otherwise, a lot of IOU’s! Hope everyone’s holidays are happy.
Oh, I would love to have this book – it looks fabulous! I love to sew. I am making 2 lap quilts, one “kindle” holder, and 3 table runners for Christmas gifts this year. If I win the book and or the fabrics, I will continue sewing for gifts in the new year. And I will promise to donate one of them to a charitable organization! Here’s hoping . . .
For gifts this Christmas I am working on some cute Key Chains and a few new purse designs! I am also trying for the first time a quilt! eck so we’ll see how it turns out
And I always love when you can make a whole project from only 1 yard (or less) of fabric! Easy on the slowly shrinking wallet!!
Oh please, oh please, pick me! For Christmas gifts I made (yes I’m done!) a bathrobe for my son, a nightgown for my daughter, and 5 reusable grocery bags for different friends. See I can share. Now please pick me! Thank you.
hey kathy . . . count me in for the giveaway, please.
Wanted to thank you SO Much for adjusting my last order to make up for me not reading the pattern well! I’ve been busy this year . .I made an advent calendar (using Oh Fransson’s pattern from Sew Mama Sew), garlands, lavender sachets with vintage doilies and linen, christmas ornaments galore ( my first craft sale — also appliqued baby shirts, magnets, pins, hairclips and candy!), and of course hoping to get the quilted table runner done for my Mother in law. I’m thinking it will be laaaaate! So much to do!!
hugs! thanks again . . adding your blog to my reader now!
What a lovely giveaway. For Xmas I’m hoping to finish knitting a lace scarf for my mum, and sew a sleep mask for my brother. I’ve just spent an hour or more reading all the comments above, following links… now I have so many other ideas!
Woo-hoo, great book! I am working on my first baby sweater.
I’m making a large gingerbread house with a separate (smaller) dog house…of course, way too many cookies…and a strip pieced scrap quilt at the last minute, because even wtih my best efforts to be organized and prepared early this year, I still thought of a HUGE project I just had to make at the last minute…so typical. I’d love to have the book…maybe it could help me get better prepared for next year….probably not.
Merry Christmas…and Happy New Year.
I am almost done making flannel jammies for my 3 year old niece that match her Mom’s Christmas gift…on my new Janome Jem 760. (An early Christmas gift to myself.) As a relatively new sewer, I want to strangle the pattern writer who forgot to mention to “flip the front & backs” of the leg. But I prevailed…whooohooo.
I’m sewing a messenger bag for my niece. I’ve also been crocheting some wristwarmers form my mom this year!
Sadly, I’m not making much of anything this year. To much going on. But here’s to next year!
I’m working on little fabric baskets (from Pink Penguin’s tutorial) that I’ll stuff with small things like fabric wallets and tissue holders for my mom, sister, and nieces. First time I’ve ever really made stuff for Christmas, and I’m having a blast.
I’m knitting socks, sewing a couple of aprons and camera cases. And baking. One of these fabric bundles would repenish my stash, and I’d love the book for next Christmas’s gift-making.
Fa, la, la….I am making 6 pencil cases for 6 different little girls between 4 and 9 years. I have 2 little girl lap quilts for use by the girls or their dollies. PJ pants for my hubby and an assortment of shopping totes for my sister and sisters in law. And I need to start a baby quilt for a baby due on New Years day!!! This is the first give away I’ve commented on – maybe I’ll be lucky.
I’m making pj bottoms for my daughter and niece, zippered shoe bags for my mom, cloth napkins for another niece, and hopefully the Schoolhouse Tunic for myself!
I’m making hound hankies (aka neckerchiefs), some of which I give to my local humane society for their adopt a dog program.
