Costume Making

In the blink of an eye, 14 years of Halloween costume making, pumpkin carving, and trick-or-treating has zoomed by. I look forward to it each and every year. Especially the costume making part ; )

Caitlin (1 1/2) in Montclair Park in Oakland, California, wearing the first costume I ever made her.

Leil (1 1/2) as the same bunny 3 years later.

Since the bunny there’s been a steady stream of Disney princesses and villains, space travelers, black cats, Cleopatra and Saphira (probably my all time favorite), Jedi, and last year’s Katamari.

Japanese pop culture has taken over our house. This year I’m making costumes for characters I only vaguely understand. Link from Zelda and Kasane Teto. A fascination with the idea of Cosplay has elevated the game. The costume details attempt to meticulously re-create the attire known to be worn by the character. No complaints from this mom. I can’t imagine a more fun challenge!

They’ve already began lobbying to attend Sakura-Con next April. In our house that will most definitely be a parent chaperoned outing. I figure it will closely resemble my dad taking 2 friends and me to a Fleetwood Mac concert in 1978.

I made a good run at it this weekend. I like to start with a commercial pattern and then start making changes. The key is finding a pattern that has the ‘right bones’. I’m getting better at choosing, it makes the job much easier. I can’t wait till Jennifer Paganelli and Carla Hegeman Crim see what I did with the Patricia Tunic (an absolutely fabulous pattern by the way)!

What a couple of cuties! My kids chose store bought costumes this year and though I’m relieved, I’m a bit sad too. I can’t wait to see how your costumes turn out!

My parents sighed a collective sigh of relief the year I wanted them to take me and two friends to a Journey concert and it sold out 5 people in front of us.

Know what you mean. I made a Kitara (from Avatar) outfit for Lea over the weekend.

Wow! My “baby” is 25 and my oldest is 44, and for once I’m glad they’re that old. We just did plain old costumes – scarecrow, hobo, etc…………lol……..I don’t think I could handle all of these new-fangled characters. My oldest daughter went as Cindi Lauper one year. Today’s crop of kids don’t even know who she is. I’m going to go sign in to the old folks home now…….8-)

I love it! Best not to show my daughter(14). She is a big Japanese pop culture fan. She would so dig this idea. Maybe next year. You inspire me. Thanks kathy

Wow, Kathy, how very talented to make suits like that for your children! How happy they must be to have a mom who can make them the costumes they really want (O:

How cute! I can’t wait to see what you did the Patricia Tunic! I’ve been thinking about that pattern for a while, this might just send me over the edge.

What cute pictures! My girls are a pink princess, Little “Dead” Riding Hood, and a vampire princess. Some things are made and others are store bought. Nothing as major as this though. :) I can’t wait to see how they look in them.

Fun!!! I’ve done Pippi Longstocking, pirates, hobos, indians, etc…Nothing quite as challenging as your upcoming costumes.

I giggled about the Fleetwood Mac supervised concert. My husband took our daughter and friend to see N’ Sync. Daughter had a t-shirt made for her dad that said Out of Sync Dad!

I do the same thing. Jaxon is being Dr. Horrible and I started with a lab coat pattern and altered it to look like Dr. Horrible’s. http://www.drhorrible.com/

Ah yes, I made costumes, just like you for the longest time. This year, I made a costume for my 16 year old, with her help. She did all the cutting, I did the sewing. After all, she is definitely old enough to participate now. Like you this is not a costume, I truly understand either.

Luke Skywalker and a witch are being fabricated here. The witch has to be a little bit pretty though.

    Your girls are so cute!

For some reason I have not gotten excited about Halloween costumes. My mom used to make our costumes when we were growing up, and they were beautiful. My girls don’t know what Halloween is yet, but at least one will after this year. Hopefully I will catch the urge to start making their costumes by next year. I can’t wait to see how yours come out!

What a good mom you are :-) Hang on to the bunnies and such. It’s a lot of fun putting them on your grandchildren! (and you just won’t believe how fast the time seems to have flown by then)

Oh this story sounds a lot like my costume story. Our character was Sailor Moon. Of course it was many years ago. Have fun!

What cute, cute bunnies – time does pass quickly. I have a friend who takes her son to Sakura-Con type thingies and says that they are well organized and she even enjoys them!

Yup, you’re an awesome mom! I too had fun putting together a retrospective post of costumes from the past…and had a laugh over how many times the costumes got re-used! Yay for handmade! Yay for recycling!
