My Summer

I looked up today and realized the imps were at it again, flipping the calendar over to August and 10 days in at that! It’s been a summer of very hard work for me. A time in the life of my business that requires the extra effort needed to push it forward and over the hump. Some days I just wish the e-mail queue would disappear and all the bolts would vanish and I was suddenly alone sewing in a quiet room. And it looks like the last part of that will happen soon!

Pink Chalk Fabrics will stage a takeover this week of several downstairs rooms in our home, namely the dining room and entry way. At least 10 different scenarios were spun including commercial space and a large, pre-fabricated shed being erected in the back yard. The girls were relieved when the notion of bunk beds was thrown out. The idea to re-purpose a space so central to our family life had not even been on the table when the brainstorming began. We picked apart the idea and viewed it from every angle. Could something this wacky be the victor? Suddenly we just knew it was the right thing for our family at this moment in time. It feels good when a decision so clearly presents itself.

The move will occur this week. The extra upstairs bedroom will welcome home my sewing room which I have so, so, so missed. I can hardly wait! Now if I could just work out how to get those imps to carry all the fabric down the stairs.

I don’t suppose sliding down the stairs on bolts of fabric would be acceptable, would it?! Our dining room has always been part of the kitchen and living room, but if it was a separate space I’d totally make it into a studio (or shop in your case).

My daughter and I were just talking about brownies–the fairy kind that magically does your housework for you if you leave some food out for them. It was lovely fantasizing for a bit. Then she came up with the ingenious idea of trapping one so it could be a slave! Holy cow–what do they teach in school these days?! LOL. Best wishes on the move. Perhaps you could bribe your daughters with brownies (the edible kind) to help you :) .

Congrats on your reorg! It’ll be wonderful to have a little space of your own, especially since you work at home. I love your shop by the way, and so appreciate your quick turnaround time! Good luck on getting your girls in on your move.

So exciting, Kathy. Hope you find a bunch of extra hands, whether they be impish or not, to help you relocate and get all set up. If I was any closer, I’d be there in a shot, you know that, right?

    Kathy!
I’ve missed your presence in the blog-o-sphere so! I also know it’s because your business is keeping you busy, which is a good thing. Anyway, I wanted to let you know that we re-purposed our dining room too (into a music room for all 3 of my guys to practice in). There’s a whole long post about it here:

But I wanted to let you know how happy I am with this move – I’m sure you will be too (much more so than having the girls double up!) Good luck and enjoy!

Congratulations! Things don’t always happen the way we envision, but the best thing is to be flexible and see where your business takes you next while suiting your family dynamics as well!

Wow, you certainly have been busy. So glad to hear that things are falling nicely into place for the shop and your sewing haven. Love this image and I can’t wait to see the skirt you are making with the fabric. Enjoy the move.

Hi, Glad to hear you are doing well. I need that Flower Sugar! Time for Ikea? I took over part of the garage, an upstairs bedroom and part of the living room, so I feel your pain. Need help, let me know. Four full bolts is a full load for me (by myself), but I think I could handle five or six.

Maybe you can bribe your girls with school clothes…. oh wait… they probably need them anyway….. hehehehehe! Seems fair to me… I guess I’ve always figured that kids+work +slave labor! Our kids always managed to get in on the work… some willing, some not so much!
Have fun getting organized! I’d be there in a flash if you weren’t so far away!!!

Keep pressing on- my husband is gone for a week, and I brought the sewing machine to the kitchen table and I feel like a new woman!

Sometimes we have to think outside the box, don’t we? I think you’ll be happy you did it! We just moved into a new (to us) house. It has one fewer bedrooms than we’ve had in the past, so my sewing room had to go. I was really sad about that because I really need to sew and doing it at the dining table isn’t a good option for us. This house has a wonderful huge family room in the back, so we made the crazy/bold decision to use the living room for my sewing room. I don’t think many people will come to our front door, so it won’t be noticed unless we are entertaining in the dining room. And I could always put a decorative screen in the doorway to obscure the view if we were having a nice dinner. I figure with our casual entertaining style, we won’t regret it one bit.
