Knitting in the Sun - Book Review + Giveaway
Jul 15th, 2009 by Kathy

Knitting in the Sun: 32 Projects for Warm Weather (a lovely new knitting book by Kristi Porter) arrived in the middle of a Bainbridge Island heatwave (of course if you’re familiar with the Puget Sound area that merely means we turn the fan on, sport a pair of shorts and bask in the sunshine, truly glorious weather).

Taos Convertible Vest by Stefanie Japel
A compilation of designs from 21 contributors, this beautiful collection features warm weather patterns made from lucsious materials including cotton, linen, hemp, bamboo and even soysilk yarns. It also features clever techniques for using traditional cold weather fibers like mohair, wool and alpaca in ways that make them suitable for warmer climates.

Bordeaux Lace Shawl by Janine Le Cras
The patterns in the book are sized to fit women from extra small through plus sizes. They cover a range of difficulty levels. I enjoyed the inclusion of a ‘Skills Used’ section for each pattern. It describes the techniques and/or special tools needed to make the pattern, a useful way to determine if it’s something I can take on with the skills I have.

Santorini Linen Kimono Jacket by Lisa Limber
Subdivided into 6 sections: Accessories, Sleeveless, Short Sleeves, Long Sleeves, Cardigans, and Odds & Ends, the book includes a wide array of flattering designs for all body types. I had to laugh when I saw the Long Sleeves section, my first thought was “Yes, designs for Northwest summers!” I truly had a good chuckle when I turned the page and saw that the first pattern in the section was named “Puget Sound”.

Puget Sound Drop-Stitch Sweater by Kristi Porter
Some multi-contributor books can be disjointed and look like a hodge podge of projects. Most definitely not the case with this book. Kristi Porter has done an outstanding job of pulling together talented designers that complement one another as well as the warm weather theme. Flawless knitting skills and high quality materials used for the samples contribute to the success of the book. It creates a soothing cohesive collection that inspired my knitting bug. The photography is stunning to boot. I could feel the sand between my toes as I carried my needles, yarn and beach chair to the shore.

Haleakala Beach Chair by Heather Broadhurst
Now the giveaway: leave a comment telling me your favorite summer knitting or sewing project. Three lucky winners will receive one of the following: the book, a Manhattan FQ set or a Nantucket FQ set (both from Summer Soiree by Paula Prass). I’ll draw a winners Friday morning (really!).
Happy Summer Making! xo Kathy

Toques (hats) and socks are my favourite knitting projects, they are small and pretty quick to knit up. As for sewing, it would be my go to messenger bag, since it is so quick to sew up and so functional when filled with all the summer essentials. I love how you have used some of the new fabrics from the shop in each of the book images in this post. I especially love the Summer Soiree Centerpiece Gray fabric. Thanks Kathy!
My current favorite sewing project is a lap-size quilt I am making for a friend who has breast cancer and has had surgery and is now going through chemo. My friend is known for helping others before herself; her family calls her before they call 911! Quilt is made from fabric called ‘Nest’, which reminds me of birds taking care of their young (and my friend who takes care of others.) I’m giving it at the end of her treatments as a celebration - don’t want the quilt to remind her of the treatments, but of her triumph.
I don’t knit (I tried), but my niece does, so the book would go to her to enjoy. Thanks.
Warm weather knitting? You know that’s got my name written all over it! I’ve got a ripple afghan on hold because it’s a wool blend and I can’t stand having it in my lap during this hot, humid, time of year. Summer is definitely the time to crank out those cotton washcloths though. Small and cool — perfect hot-weather knitting!
I usually knit winter stuff in the summer! But this year I’ve been sewing up stacks of the slippers from Heather Ross’s Weekend Sewing. They’re the perfect lightweight house shoes. (A warning to bigfoots like myself: Her size L does not fit a women’s 10 without some modification!)
I love simple sewing during the summer; quick things that go to instant use…towel wrap/handle for beach towels, water bottle holders, a hankerchief out of a favorite fabric to keep hair out of little ones’ faces…
So far, my favorite summer projects have been socks! No big lap full of project, and not so far off season that I lose motivation…. that could say more about my new obsession with to-up socks than anything else, however….
I think my new favorite summer project is a ultra light summer quilt I’m about to start. I’m hoping it’s going to be amazing!
My favorite summer project is anything small and quick! Although currently I’m working on Amy Butler’s Field Bag.
I don’t have a favorite knitting project. Yet. I finally learned how to knit last Saturday! This coming Saturday I’ll learn how to finish off the scarf that is my homework and then I’ll add purling to my skill set.
My favorite summer knitting is a summer cardigan for NEXT summer. Seems to go that way each year!
My favorite summer sewing project is sewing patchwork hippie skirts–perfect for festivals, concerts, besides everday use. wearing them always makes summer feel more like vacation, even though i work through the summer.
I’m doing some English paper piecing - grandmother’s flower garden - using batiks. So summery and easy to take along wherever I go.
i like to knit socks and lace in the summer. smaller, lighter, less warm things.
i also crochet and sew way more in the summer. the other seasons i spin and knit more.
Summer knitting has always been socks for me. Even in my air-conditioned house I don’t want to be hauling large swaths of wool aroud.
You’re sweet! What a great contest. My favorite summer project is getting ready for my fall projects. I usually take a break from knitting and sort through my stash, organize my needles, and set up my fall craft list so I can be ready for the holidays. A little sewing, because there’s always a wedding or a baby or some such, but mostly relaxing and planning!
what a great giveaway! I’ve been knitting a newborn baby sweater since I have a bun in the oven that isn’t due till December and I have a Rowan Summer Tweed sweater for myself that’s also in progress.
This summer, I am working on small blocks and applique. Things that don’t involve draping a whole lot of fabric on my lap! I live in Sacramento, CA, where it’s triple digits this week, so the less fabric the better!
My summer project for this year is cotton pjs with thrifted sheets. I’m working on a quilt right now and can’t wait to get started on pjs and sundresses! I’m hoping to learn to knit soon so I’d love a book of projects to inspire me!
That book is wonderful!
I don’t know if I’m at that level yet though (haven’t finished my first dishcloth yet) but I do love the idea of being able to knit.
Lately I’ve really enjoyed reverse applique on some plain t-shirts for my kiddos and making beach cover ups for them!
It’s summer!!! Finally!
I live in central Florida, so most of my work looks like summer projects to those from cooler climes. But, in the summer, I find myself making alot of loose skirts and knitting because it allows me to sit still in front of the fan without too much insulation around me. (Particularly when you figure I never knit with wool.)
My favorite project has to be making beach tote bags!
Ack! Another knitting book that I “need”. Right now I’m working on a Spidery Tank. So far, so good. So I guess that’s my favorite knitting pattern this summer. (I didn’t knit last summer)
For me summertime is all about lace, lace, lace. Its lightweight, doesn’t get all hot in your lap while knitting and its oh so etheral when all finished. Perfect for the summer evenings.
I tend to take a hiatus from knitting during the summer but this summer I’ve been knitting a cashmere Clapotis. It’s been a cold summer in Chicago so, despite the teasing from my husband, I’ve really enjoyed knitting it now.
I’ve been sewing a lot more this summer and just finished up a little doll for my son. I used one of my husband’s old oxford shirts and tea dyed it so it wasn’t totally white, used an old tshirt of mine for the doll’s shirt and made it look like my son. It’s definitely not perfect and I see about 10 things I’d like to do over but it’s still my favorite–like a little piece of each of us went into it for him.
I’m currently enjoying 2 weeks where both of my teenaged children are traveling and I have glorious stretches of uninterrupted time to sew. I’m currently having fun experimenting with reusing and repurposing fabric, trims, and buttons - making pillows and home dec items.
That book looks wonderful!
My favorite summer knitting project is–perhaps oddly–winter things for my husband. This way, I figure they’ll be done by the time it gets cold, since I tend to have ADD and take on *way* too many projects at once. If I knit “in season,” I’ll never get it done in THAT season!
I am actually knitting some light lace weight shawls. And for sewing! I am sewing recycled Capri-Sun juice pouch bags!!
My favorite knitting project this summer is socks for the little grandgirls using a hand dyed varigated yarn. They are so cute
when you wear a child’s size 6 or 7. Sewing projects have been
skirts for all the girls in the family. We have been using the
Favorite Things pattern for kids called cute skirts. Very easy and
very cute. Would love to win any of the prizes you are offering.
Thanks for a chance.
I love the book, but can’t get over the knitted beach chair!
Aside from quilting projects, my favourite sewing project is making summer skirts for myself. Just straight and basic or a-line in beautiful fabrics. Haven’t made any yet though. It hasn’t been warm enough yet believe it or not! LOL! Thanks for the giveaway!
my favorite summer sewing project is soft cotton pajama bottoms. I am planning on using some of the Alexander Henry fabric to make some cool ones for my nieces.
As silly as it sounds, I usually like to knit scarves or socks in the summer. Both are items I would finish and then not see again for months! I think it is because they are small enough to tote around in summer bags, and they make me feel like I am prepping myself for the cold months ahead.
I like to knit socks in the summer, as then I don’t have a big bulk of knitting sitting on my lap. I do tend to sew more in the summer, quilts and bags for the most part. The Knitting in the Sun book looks awesome.
Well it’s July, so I have Christmas on the brain! Yes, I know crazy but it is the only way to ever get any sleep in December. So I am planning and getting started on sewing projects for Christmas gifts like totes, jewelry pouches and tooth fairy pillows! Enjoy your summer!
Currently I am knitting a lacy scarf which seems so light and airy and perfect for a summer project. I got the pattern from the Purlsoho blog. Also been sewing some purses for a fund raiser for an animal shelter that they are going to sell in the fall.
That looks like a pretty good book. I like the projects you’ve highlighted.
I tend to keep right on knitting sweaters in the summer–you know, since it’s not really all that hot in Seattle–but I do usually knit summery ones. Cotton, linen… I just finished a lacy tank in a hemp blend. Very good for summer knitting!
I’m not a knitter, but so far this summer I’ve been keen on sewing totebags. Love that first gray fabric above.
My favorite things to knit and sew in the summer are the same as what I make in the other seasons - a little bit of everything! I do tend to avoid heavy fleece and wool if I can though :o)
oh the images in that book make we wish I could knit!
Since we’re experiencing winter right now, I’m dreaming about sewing a little baby quilt, sewing little stitches in the sun!
Summer sewing are quick things, such as totes and hats. I also love to knit socks…gotta get ready for the winter with warm socks!
I’m a novice knitter and have stuck pretty close to knitting scarves. But I did make a couple of pairs of handwarmers and would like to do more of them. I’m better at sewing than knitting because I’ve done it longer - I make clothes for myself and also lots of gift and home items. Right now I’m working on a patchwork mat for an outside bench.
I really need to get on sewing some summer skirts. But right now my favorite project has been planning out the patchwork-y pillows I’m going to make for my couch.
I am new to sewing, but I love making pincushions since they are so cute and are pretty quick to make! I hope to graduate to bags and totes next!
I am just learning to knit, but I look forward to the day I’ll be able to make such gorgeous clothes. My favorite summer sewing (this summer, anyway) is baby nightgowns, sized for next summer, ’cause I’m that slow (it took me a loong time to figure that out, is how slow).
I’ve been working on little preemie hats and dishcloths, but would love to make the little Jacques Crusteau lobster from the online mag Petite Purls. So cute!
Hats are my favorite summer project. They are great for hiding your face (and recently dyed hair) from the scorching sun!
Ahhh, Puget Sound; just thinking about it puts me in a lovely summer state of mind! This summer, I’m having fun making sundresses for two granddaughters. Then, in the evening I’ve just begun one of Anne Hanson’s (KnitSpot) new scarf patterns with a gorgeous yarn from The Woolen Rabbit. Light and airy and fun to knit!
When I look at the book I wish that I was a knitter! One day I will be…
This summer I’m not working on too much. I’ve made a small quilt top (for a table) which I plan to hand quilt while I’m on vacation. I hope to make a couple of sunhats for my girls.
My current favorite summer project is a yo-yo quilt as it’s an easy take along project. Ever since I got my knitting needles taken away from me at airport security I’ve traveled with sewing projects instead. They even made me take my project off the needles—@*#* them! But you can see I’m over it, right?
Ohh, this is perfect. I am deep into sewing right now, but I am already starting to think about the knitting I want to do this fall/winter. I would love to make that Puget Sound drop stitch sweater. As for my favorite project, I am probably working on it now, coordinating dresses for my girls’ birthday’s. I am having a lot of fun with two girls.
Summer is a great time for projects that I don’t have time to do during the school year (except this year - I’m teaching summer school!). I usually do small things that I can put in my bag or drag outside. I favor mittens and socks for knitting. Right now I am knitting a pair of Monkey socks (finally) in a silk and wool mix. I live in Idaho and don’t wear socks much in the summer but I look forward to wearing all of these small things once it cools down. I do some sewing as well - I have a quilt on the rack but it hasn’t seen much action lately.
I love knitting shawls on fingering weight yarn in the summer. So quick and oh so light
I love knitting socks in the summer - it’s perfect to stock up for the winter and they aren’t big and wooly on the lap during my subway commute!
During the summer, I turn to knitting things for the home. Right now I am working on some ball band dishcloths because you can never have enough of those!
I am loving the Summer Soire prints in the background! Gorgeous, bright colors. I’m knitting up hats for my boys from Blue Sky cottons and for myself from my own handspun. Even though this is supposedly going to be an El Nino year I hope to wear handknit hats at least some of the time.
I love making summer clothes for my girls. They have enough skirts between them to clothe the entire little girl population of a small country. I just can’t help myself. So many fabrics, so little time.
I am sewing the Heather Ross Simple Sundress in one of her Mendocino fabrics (pink w/ Seahorses)
Wow, I love the beach chair in the book! That’s pretty darn cool! My summer project so far has been to knit tons of baby hats. I’m destashing in a big way, so I’ve been knitting lots of baby hats to donate to charities. Right now I’m knitting a hooded baby blanket that will also go to charity. The book you are giving away looks amazing and would give me an excuse to re-stash! lol!
My favorite summer sewing project is making an outfit for my daughter, usually a hat and a dress. So much fun!
Knitting or sewing project? Well, I gotta go with the sewing. Knitting in Phoenix = 110+ degree weather with a lap full of yarn. Just can’t get into that no matter how much I love knitting.
So, favorite sewing project is any dress/skirt made of light weight cotton. Have some cotton lawn and a Japanese dress/tunic pattern on the cutting table now.
My favorite summer knitting projects fit into two categories:
1) Small and mindless enough to take to baseball games
2) Light and airy enough to keep me from stabbing myself with my needles in a heat-induced rage.
My favorite summer sewing projects are anything that, by design and fabric choice, quells my insatiable summer wanderlust.
I have been loving making baby leggings and hats.
Love this book! I have to say, I have been a prolific Mini Mail Sack sewer this summer. I think my daughter is being invited to birthday parties just so I’ll make the little girl a Mail Sack. Really!
I love summer! I love sewing summer dresses for my little one. With all the gorgeous fabrics around, the possibilities are endless.
I love both knitting and sewing. My fav knitting project is usually children’s sweaters, many times for my grandkids Christmas. And sewing is usually a super cute summer capri outfit for my granddaughter! The book and fabric sound great!
OH so kind of you to host a give away!
My current favorite sewing project is the Children’s Play Tent from the book SEWING IN NO TIME… I’m making 2 as a surprise for my little people… they’ve been making tents with blankets just about every day all summer on the patio and I stumbled on this pattern and it couldn’t be more perfect… I’ll be posting the finished pieces to my blog in about a week.
As for summer knitting, I’m enjoying finishing some FETCHING fingerless mitts for my husband… the mitts are only a few months late… or maybe they’re just early!!
I have only started and finished one knitting project, a small afghan for my niece nearly 5 years ago. It took a few months to make, but I was so happy with the end result.
My favorite summer sewing projects are dresses and skirts for my daughter (6) and for myself. I love to make them and she’s proud to wear them!
I usually look for something portable for summer and socks fill the bill. But this summer I have a new great-nephew being born soon so I am hard at work on booties. Just the thing for instant gratification and relief of those “granny wishes”.
My favorite summer sewing project so far was to make bunting to decorate my front porch for the Fourth of July. It looked so awesome on the open railings, that I wonder why it took me six years to finish it.
Summer means lace shrugs, bags, etc! And also getting a head start on winter knitting.
I’m a quilting girl it’s true - but right now, I have a serious yen to make dresses. I look at my stash and instead of seeing all the possiblities for quilts it affords, I see sheath dresses, trapeze dresses, kitschy retro dresses, elegant tea length dresses, cheongsams - I sewed up a summer frock in coral pink last night (and made a matching quilted belt) and today have been eyeing a red linen I bought “specifically* for a quilt and have been thinking… “That vintage Vogue dress would look amazing in that red linen”.
So apparently, my summer sew (right now, anyway) is anything “dress”. Like “The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins “.
Only, dresses.
My knitting always slows down in the summer as it becomes too hot in my house (no a/c). I’ve been trying to knit with more cotton and linen yarns as they are not as “sticky” as wool and feel cooler to the touch. I just finished a yoga mat bag in cotton and I’m gearing up to knit the Leela sweater (http://www.berroco.com/270.275/270/270_leela_pv.html) in linen next.
Interesting book! We do have a/c, and to get the upper floor tolerable, the main floor has to be cooler than it would be otherwise… which means I bring out the wool lace shawl and work on that.
Kathy - you are so kind. Since summer is the weather all year round (minus the rainy days), at the moment quilting is my favourite sewing projects.
Totes bags, mainly. We can’t seem to ever have enough around here with all the summer travels.
My favourite project for summer are easy clothes for my kids: shorts, little tank dresses and hats to match!
Great book!! That beach chair is scrumptious……8-)
Let’s see……for sewing I’m having fun making some “English Paper Pieced” pincushions by hand; and trying to work up the courage (and find JUST THE RIGHT PATTERN) for the Far Far Away Fat Quarter Bundle I bought from you. I really, really love that fabric.
As for knitting, I made my BIL a great knit hat and my DS a cool shawl while my daughter and I were on a road trip from San Diego to SE Oklahoma to see them. Also trying to finish the million other projects I have started..8-). Oh, and if you’ve never visited Sedona, AZ, you HAVE TO GO! It is so gorgeous. As my daughter said, “it lives up to all the hype about it” Have a great summer crafting season everyone.
I like knitting toys during the summer. Or baby gifts. I’m always knitting baby gifts.
I’m a fairly new knitter. I love to knit anything. I have started my Christmas crafting and hope to make bed covers for three of my five kids…and postage stamp quilts for the other two. Dang! Now that I have that written here, I feel like I may have bitten off more than I can chew!~
I love to collect knitting books! I would love to own this one, too!
Happy crafting!
As a newish sewer and knitter…my favorite summer project has actually been socks. Small enough to not get hot sitting in my lap, but I can still use stretchy forgiving wool
Looks like a great book!
My summer knitting project was only a top with many holes in it.
Thanks for the giveaway.
I usually stick to small knitting projects like socks and hats (yes, wool ones — we need them for our outdoor adventures much of the year even in the mild PNW) but this year I’ve added in baby projects, since I — and a good friend! — are both expecting babies around Christmas!
Right now I’m making Roman shades for our living room and dining area. It’s quite a lot of work but I love the feeling of making something practical for our home that we will get to use often and for a long time. It’s not just a fun bag I’m making for myself, but something that will make it bearable for us to be indoors at the same time as it “spices” up our house.
My #1 project this summer will be sewing cushions in the fabulous handprinted linnen with gingko leaves from the lovely ladies of Ink&Spindle (go have a look, they print such gorgeous designs! http://www.inkandspindle.com.au)
And probably knitting a light shawl for this rather windy summer weather, something lacey and drapey perhaps?
Have a great summer!
How I wish it was time for a summer project - it’s an unusually cold, wet & wintry day in Sydney. But when it is, I love something super bright, with lots of white & light-weight to hand quilt.
My summer projects seem to be embroidery pieces for various weddings - I’m slowly knitting a vest for myself, but it’s the thing that always gets put aside for me to work on something else!
I love to sew felt. It is so much fun!
thanks a lot!
I love making cute skirts in the summer.
I have made some really cute baby blankets in the summer. But I have to say my favorite thing ti knit in the Summer or whenever is the koigu Charlotte’s Web Shawl. The yarn colors I pick bring out the liveliness of the season.
I’ve discovered that enjoy making baby quilts for friends/family. Much easier and quicker to do than a full-sized quilt!
I like making baby booties in the summer because I can take the work with me con5459(at)gmail(dot)com
I have to say that my favorite summer projects are anything quick and easy. I don’t have a very long attention span in summer. So, I like making small Christmas ornaments, light weight scarves, etc.
rsgrandinettti@yahoo(dot)com
Scarves to give friends at Christmas! Thanks for the lovely giveaway~
smickelson1993 at yahoo dot com
Teaching my 6 year old granddaughter to knit. She is doing amazingly well. We are making a scarf for mommy for Xmas, look out world a new knitter!!
I like sewing summer tops!

Summer is the time of year I get ready for fall/winter. I’m currently knitting a bed jacket and a shrug. I like to have more than one project going at the same time. In this way I don’t get bored with one project {and end up either making mistakes or setting the project aside and it not getting done.} After these two projects are finished I plan to make some knitted dish cloths to have on hand for hostess gifts come the Christmas holidays.
My favorite sewing is mindless strip piecing or crazy quilt piecing. Something that doesn’t take a lot of concentration or getting up and down to press. Thank you for offering this wonderful give-away. I would love either of the FQ packs. Paula’s new fabric is gorgeous. Take care and God bless, Cory
My favorite summertime sewing project is definitely the beachbag…a girl can never have too many and it is lovely to coordinate with your swimming suits/coverups!
shirts and pants i like the sew.
thanks
At 32, I am very fortunate to have a full set of grandparents. I do not knit or anything like that, but my grandma knits/crotchets, spins her own wool, etc. My favorite blankets are the ones she has made for me. Same goes for my mittens, hats, headbands and scarves. I would give this book to her (and mark the pages of the pieces I want her to make for me).
i am in no way talented enough to knit or sew.but my 18 yo daughter this past year made me a gorgeous quilt in her home ec class it is so pretty. i was shocked at her making such a beautiful quilt being her first time so i bought her a sewing machine last christmas..she would love this
I actually like to make quilted lap blankets in the summer. Then they are ready when the weather gets cooler to take to church so older persons who like to use them at church can during church if their legs get cold. That way the heat in the church doesn’t need to be turned up until the weather really says it should, and the younger folks and kids aren’t roasting. Most of the older people already wear sweaters or suit jackets and that keeps their arms warm, but does nothng for the legs. If there are extra’s they can be given to nursing homes for use by persons wheelchair bound. I also like to make one for my min pin dog who sleeps in his little dog bed on the floor. He likes to be covered totally, even his little head when he sleeps at night, even in the summer. In the summer I usually just give him a very light weight blankie, made out of two layers of cotton fabric, and no filling. I don’t want him to get overheated since we rarely use the air conditioner at night.
My favorite summer project has been sewing my own totes and handbags. As a future teacher and a mommy to boot…you can never have enough of them and they are so fun to make! I have wanted to learn to knit for a long time and this looks like a great book!
Thanks for the giveaway! I pretty much knit the same things in the summer that I do in the winter. I live in Northern California, so it’s hardly any warmer here in summer than in winter
Right now, I’m working on a pair of socks, and also a short-sleeved sweater.
A really light weight scarf….
The debbie bliss cartigan I was working on last summer, has to be my favorite summer project for this year because I think I’m finally going to finish it! I have knitted since I was a child, but once I got the sewing bug a couple of years ago, my cloth stash started to grow and my knitting got dusty. Those new summer patterns make me want to shop for yarn!
I have had a lot of fun this summer with aprons and pin cushions. I also finished a graduation quilt and a couple of bags. I thought each project was fun, mostly I love stacking and restacking my fabrics and planning what each peice will become :).
I have had a lot of fun this summer with aprons and pin cushions. I also finished a graduation quilt and a couple of bags. I thought each project was fun, mostly I love stacking and restacking my fabrics and planning what each piece will become :).
Knitting baby gifts.
New scarves for the family!
I don’t do much knitting or crocheting during the summer months. I like to make patchwork tote and/or beach bags with my material scraps from other projects. Then I hand them out to family and friends! Thanks for this giveaway.
I haven’t knit anything in years but have a box full of yarn and tons of needles, this would inspire me to dust those off!
I am knitting a Wallaby baby sweater…my first sweater ever!!
It is from a pattern book called The Wonderful Wallaby and includes directions for the whole family. I met Kristi Porter at Knitting in La Jolla where she was signing one of her books. I am looking forward to this book.
I’m enjoying the Northwest heat wave, though I despise watering the lawn. Not having grown up with the routine of having to water, I keep forgetting that the flowers feel like they are living in a desert right about now.
But those sweaters in the book do look like good all around Northwest sweaters!
Socks are my favorite summer knitting project, and winter knitting project, and spring or summer knitting project.
I love making dishclothes
My favorite summer knitting project is socks, they’re nice and light and don’t heat up your lap like a big sweater can. Thanks for having the giveaway!
Love crocheting…working on the ripple blanket for my son.
A baby quilt
My favorite project this summer has been making bags. So much fun!
i’m doing a sweater for my husband hes going to love it as much as i love doing it mverno@roadrunner.com
I know it is only July but I love beginning my Christmas knitting now and crocheting. I am knitting homemade ornaments for family and friends and to send to troops overseas who will not be home this holiday season. I am also knitting tons of red and green stockings to go with them as well as old fashioned knitted slipper socks (which my grandmother taught me when I was a little girl) Besides that I am working on a knitted shawl for my great-grandmother as she loves them to keep warm with on those cold Maine winter mornings!
This summer has been all about sewing gifts: a simple graduation quilt, several of the colored pencil rolls you designed, two styles of tote bags, and, my favorite, patchwork pillows. I’ve taught my 8 year old daughter and a neighbor girl (they just happen to share birthdays) to sew patchwork pillow tops, and my daughter is just getting ready to begin her second quilt.
My favorite summer project would be lace shawls and socks. Nothing better than working with some light weight yarn and sitting in my back yard watching my son play.
I always knit socks in the summer. Light to carry, cool to knit, and bright, fun summer colors.
I love to knit baby clothes in the summer. They are small, portable, and not too hot to have on your lap!
Bordeaux Lace Shawl looks really pretty i mean wow! i always knitt scarfs in the summer that way their defo going to be finished in time for winter!
My favorite summer knitting project is a hat and sundress I am knitting for myself.
Baby clothes. After all, when are babies not in season?
my mom is teaching me how to knitt a blanket im having a blast with it smile
I usually start my Holiday quilts for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. I can work in sessions and put them together as I have extra time at home.
I don’t do it. I want to win it for my mother-in-law. She is great at making blankets
I like to knit/crochet lap prayer blankets for those I know and the clients I work with in the health field..thanks for the opp
My favorite summer knitting is actually with wool! I knit bags to be felted for a show I do, with others, in December. Knitting them now…..not only makes for relaxing knitting (good for chatting with others while whiling away some hours)….it won’t matter if they get diry: they’ll be washed!…but also I will either have some possible Christmas gifts ready or many items for sale in December.
The book looks absolutely marvelous! I never want to knit sweaters (don’t want to sit and pay attention that long), but the ones shown above look so fun and fashionable…esp for a tall woman.
Well, I’m learning (again) to knit this summer. My project this summer is to finish my first scarf! I’m excited to pick up this wonderful hobby again!
My favorite summer knitting is socks - they’re small, lightweight, and portable. And right now, it seems my favorite summer sewing is pillows. I’ve been sewing up a storm - we got a couple of pieces of new furniture, and it seems that spurred me on to do a bit of redecorating.
Thank you for offering the lovely prizes!
My favourite summer projects are socks. They’re portable for all the summer vacation outings that always seem to take place! I’m working on the Paraphenalia sock pattern right now. I can’t recall the link right now.
This will be for my mom’s birthday present if I win and her fav project is usually anything especially baby blankets etc.
I like to make meaning full quilts. The squares tell a story.
I’ve been sloooowly working on a cardigan. Hopefully I’ll have it finished by next summer! LOL
My favorite sewing project is making scarves.
Oh, that book looks great! I spend most of my summer knitting hours on things to put in our county fair. Since it doesn’t get *too* warm in Northern California, I can knit wool year round. I also like to knit garments just for *me* since the Fall and Winter months are spent knitting gifts.
I recently learned how to knit socks and they are currently my favorite project. At first I was intimidated to even try a sock pattern - they looked so complex, but finally I decided to give it a go and found that, like many things in life, they weren’t nearly as difficult they seemed - just had to take it one step (row) at a time!
I love making no-cook meals in the summer. Cuke salads, white bean salads, cold past salad (well, ok you DO have to cook the past beforehand). Yum.
I’m actually knitting ‘paper’ chains for Christmas … and a summer jumper that I suspect will be ready for next summer …
I have been knitting a wool blanket, of all things! I am planning ahead for Afghans for Afghans, hoping their next campaign calls for baby blankets. I have also been making my kids some toys, hedgehogs and garden slugs.
It looks like a great book! Although, over on the Seattle side of the sound it’s going to be close to 90 today, and I don’t think I could wear any kind of knitted item–even cotton!
Anyway, my current favorite summer projects are knitted socks–they get me ready for winter, but since they are small, I don’t get warm from having a sweater on my lap. As for sewing, I’m loving the Linda Tueller skirts–particularly the tiered one. Skirts are so nice for summer.
