Sewing Celebrities

Let’s face it, part of the fun of any sewing expo is getting to meet some of our favorite sewing celebrities. I really lucked out when I stopped by the booth for Marcy Tilton and Katherine Tilton. I had the good fortune of finding them both there at the same time. Their energy together as sisters was absolutely magical. I soaked up every inspirational moment.

Marcy saw my tote bag (the black, white + red one) and said she liked the way I put my fabrics together. Smile.

I signed up for Marcy’s newsletter some time ago. I get excited each month when it appears in my inbox. Her in-person persona is exactly like her writing voice only better. Unique, inspirational and informative.

She carries a beautiful selection of clothes sewing fabrics on her website. What a treat to be able to see these in person at her show booth.

Sandra Betzina is another sewing diva that I was excited to meet again. Her unique style and her ability to translate that to her pattern designs is so amazing. It struck me how both Sandra and Marcy have had very long careers in the sewing industry yet are still enthusiastic when talking about sewing. Sandra made a comment in her session about how she is always learning something new and how exciting that is. So true!

Sandra has a new web TV show. You can view 3 free episodes on her website.

I attended her session on zippers and took away several new tips. One is tacking the top of the zipper tape to the fabric before unzipping it as a way to anchor it in place. Always start sewing the zipper from the bottom. She also LOVES the double-sided tape which I love too. Her description of the signs of trouble when sewing a zipper had the whole audience laughing.

I had such a fabulous time at the show. When I’m old and the kids are gone I’m getting a hotel room and going for all 4 days!

Okay, it’s a date. When we’re both old and the kids are gone we can get hotel rooms and go together! Yes, I only use the double sided tape method for zippers unless they’re invisible. It’s just so much more simple.

Don’t forget that Marcy also noticed and admired the Mail Sack!
