Giveaway Week Day 1 – How To Make Sewing Patterns by Don McCunn

Inadvertent stockpiling has been rampant around here. I’m going to give away a different item each day this week (Monday through Friday). If you’re interested in the item leave a comment on that post (I was going to do it all as a group but the items are too different from one another and I would really like each thing to go to someone who really wants it).

I’ll draw and announce all the winners on Monday morning, January 26.

How To Make Sewing Patterns is a highly regarded book by Donald H. McCunn (so highly regarded in fact that I purchased two copies of the book). And as if there’s not enough interesting stuff on the web to wile away the hours check out Don’s webpage. He has online eBooks, online classes and hosts three different Yahoo groups.

Leave a comment telling me a sewing pattern you’d like to make.

Great giveaway! (If it extends to Oz, please count me in!)
I would love to create the perfect pencil and A-line skirt patterns … so many dramas in the past and can never get them to fit right off the shelf.

What a fun idea! I am a new sewer and I have been looking for books to learn about pattern making and fitting and so on. This book came highly recommended on Amazon. I would love to read it over. My dream is to make a perfected fitted royal blue dress for a family wedding in May. Thanks for the tip about Don’s website. I will be sure to check it out.

There are so many patterns I want to make. I have made a few swimsuits, using http://www.patternschool.com/ . I have bought a book to help me draft patterns for knits “Designing and patternmaking for stretch fabrics” by Keith Richardson. I bought it for my birthday and have been reading it whilst “watching” the kids jump on the trampoline. I have a lot of trouble getting blouses and dresses to fit, so I also want to make patterns for them too. One I have in mind is a sleeveless blouse, with a tuxedo style front, and a lace yoke on the front neck. I also have some pictures of retro dress patterns that I want to copy, given that my body does not have retro proportions and I would need to make major alterations to a retro pattern.

I would love to make a pattern for a great shirt, and a pair of pants.

I recently purchased some books about adjusting patterns, but I am thinking I may just need to draft up my own.

It is so wonderful that you are giving away duplicate copies! When I start buying duplicates I promised myself I would do the same. Also, thank you to the link to Don’s website. It is not bookmarked as one of my favorites!

Hi there – I would love a book about how to make my own sewing patterns!!

I’ve also got this on my wishlist. I’m glad you recommend it because I wasn’t sure it would be useful. I need help in drafting patterns. I’ve done quite a few for my girls’ clothes–mostly copies from catalogs where I can’t afford or get the clothes and sometimes the result is comical! I also want to be able to do simple skirts and tops for me, mostly for summer.

I would like to make pants and city shorts. I am under 5′ 3″ and the crotch length on patterns and store bought pants tends to be too long. Thanks!

I would love to make a blouse/shirt pattern that fits me. I am fairly large chested but pretty proportional everywhere else, so if I purchase a fitted shirt that fits my chest, it is huge everywhere else!

I’d like to make a blouse pattern that has a bit of a flare to it after the waste – fitted on the top, but with a kind of bias ruffle that flares above a tailored skirt. Something that would be nice for summer….

I have always made my girls clothing without patterns. There are lots of trial and erros going on when I do that. It will be nice to know how to do it more professionally. I will be totally thrilled if I win this contest. I am going to get this book one way or the other. Maybe it will be on sale at the Sewing Expo next month. =)

Pants. I want not so much to make a pattern for pants, but to learn how the patterns are made so i can better adjust pants patterns. I have never made a pair of pants I’m happy with, and I can rarely buy a pair that fit well.

That sounds like a fantastic book! I’ve been sewing for two years now, and have always depended on store-bought patterns. This year, my goal is to draft my own garment pattern. I’d love for it to look professional! I’d like to try my hand at making a new top.
