Mini Pincushions in Print

Sew Simple Volume 11 should be on newstands now. It includes my pattern for the mini-pincushions. I received my gratis copy a couple of weeks ago. Very surprising to open it up and see my project on the cover!

The editor contacted me last Spring to see if I had any projects that might be suitable for this issue. I immediately thought of the mini-pincushions. I was a little worried the idea might be rejected since I’d already posted a picture of it on my blog. I pitched it anyway and just let them know the facts.

I wanted to mention that because I’ve seen several discussion threads here and there stating magazine publishers won’t accept a project if you’ve published pictures of it on your blog. In this case I was fortunate that did not happen to me.

Most magazines have a section on their website specifying their submission requirements. Normally you’re responsible for the article, the pattern instructions, and making samples for the photo layout. I started out by publishing a tutorial on this blog for the Whip Up challenge over two years ago now! That was the first time I’d ever written instructions for one of my designs. In retrospect, an excellent way to begin the pattern writing journey.

I just got back to my desk from running errands over the lunch hour with this new issue in hand! Seriously. I really love these pincushions! Great job with the article, and making the cover! Thanks for the advice about submitting a project to a magazine. Very helpful.

Wow! Now you can be sure that I am a fan of yours and I just KNOW without being told what you are up to, because I actually bought that magazine this weekend just because of the pin cushions on the cover — and I didn’t even look to see the designer’s name! I even called my friend in Memphis this morning to tell her that when she is at the bookstore next, she should pick up the copy of Sew Simple because the cover project is so cute! Geez, now my blog friends are getting published so often – one is in Fons and Porter’s Baby this month – I’m going to start looking at the designer names on the first glance to see if I “know” anybody!

YEAH !! Congratulations for not only getting your cute pincushions published, but getting them ON THE COVER TOO !!! WOW !!

(P.S. … and, as always, you seem to answer all of my craft biz questions …. I also wondered if a magazine would reject a project/submission if you already posted it on your blog …. i.e. is that considered “previously published”? So, like you said, it depends on the magazine ….. and you should just go ahead and ask them.)
    THANKS !!

Well, your probably used to all this attention by now! Aren’t you? LoL… seems everytime I turn around I hear that your in some other magazine! Good for you! How exciting that must be! Bet your getting quite a collection hmmm? So, are you making sure to have copies for family members? Nothing like being a dropper of your own name!

Congratulations. Ugh–that technical writing is a bear, isn’t it? I have written up instructions for classes I’ve taught and it’s AMAZING how something you think is clear as a bell can be misinterpreted!

I am just now starting the pattern/tutorial writing journey in hopes that I can get it together enough to make patterns of things I design for sale.
