Shop Talk Friday – Alexander Henry, Linen + Sandi Henderson Patterns

Sandi Henderson’s much anticipated Portabellopixie Patterns arrived this week. I’m completely blown away by the quality. The patterns include an oversized 6 1/2″ x 9 1/2″ booklet with full-color pages and a full-sized pattern sheet. Sandi uses a very impressive technique of combining photographic images along with computer drawn illustration making the steps very clear to follow and understand. This is one talented gal! The multi-sized patterns contain sizes 6-12 months through girls 8.

100% natural linen. Sometimes a project just needs a little Zakka. I love using natural linen in my projects and I’m so very excited to have found a source that I’m proud to carry in the shop. It’s 60″ wide. I’m thinking about selling it in a smaller unit. Either a FQ type cut which would be 18″ x 30″ or a square measuring 18″ x 20″ or even smaller? If you have an opinion on this please leave a comment. I’ll draw 3 names on Monday for a free half yard cut of this fabulous new cloth.

Several new arrivals from Alexander Henry, this one is Starling. And yes, it’s as cute in person as it looks on the screen!

Fat quarters 18″ x 30″ of linen would be great…I’ve been wanting to try some linen in my patchwork. Love your blog…when are you going to do a book? All of your work is beautiful!

I think a fat quarter size would be fantastic… or even a 20×20 (15×15, etc) square — I would love to use some of this wonderful linen for embroidery projects!

Those girly patterns are so cute. It’s taking all my self control not to whip out my credit card and buy Gracie. As for the linen, I think bigger is better. If a fat quarter based on 60″ width is bigger than a regular fat quarter, would it then be an obese quarter?

I think having a FQ and a 1/2 yard cut would be good. The FQ would be great when you just need a little bit of linen to work with. I always like the option of a 1/2 yard cut vs a full yard for special orders. A lot of the time, when I am matching a color to a print, if it is a color I know I am not going to use again right away, I would rather just get the amount I need vs. the whole yard.

    Love the AH print!!!

    18″ X 30″ would be great.

There is no such thing as too much linen in your stash.

I’ll agree on the fat quarters – that would be a nice amount to have.

    Have a great weekend!

I agree with the others that fat quarters would be wonderful as some linen mixed in with patchwork is just so amazingly beautiful. Oh and I recently got some of those AH birdies and they are just too much! They are SO SO cute…I’m going to have to wait for the perfect project before I cut into them!

I like the fat quarters idea for the linen. I have seen a lot of people use it lately, so I am making my first patchwork project with it this weekend. I love those cute birdies!

I vote for the fat quarters as well (and yardage). I wouldn’t see any reason to go smaller than the 18×30 FQ given how versatile the linen is you can always find a use for the extra 10″

If I could choose only one of the two options, I’d go for the 20×18. Seems like it would be more flexible. Though 30×18 would be easier for you to cut!

i like the 18×30 cut for linen, but not any smaller…

and i love the sew now! print you just got in!

I think that you could offer it both ways. I like the fat quarter idea, but I would love to know that I could buy by the yard to.

I would love to have a source for 18×30 natural linen! I often use it in smaller projects, which this size would be perfect for!

    That. fabric. is. fabulous!
And to answer your question, I think a FQ would be a great size to sell. I’ve been wanting to try some linen out in a several small projects, but haven’t stumbled on it yet. I’m excited to order some.

I vote 18×30 as well. I wouldn’t go smaller . The bird print is great but why did they name it starling? Sure, it sounds good but starlings are really pesty birds that aren’t very nice looking. :) I’ll just focus on how the word sounds. :) Note: starlings are in the US because Shakespeare fanatics imported them from Europe for a Shakespeare festival long ago.

More is always better, regarding fabrics anyway. I vote for the regular fat quarter. Will you have a variety of colors? — Michele

18×30 would be a great length for that fabric. Linen is so versatile; it’s hard to see having too much of it on hand. I may have to order some soon as I haven’t been any undyed linens I’ve found so far. I’ve been meaning to incorporate some linen into some covers for throw pillows. The last linen I used in a throw pillow really pilled badly after about a year’s worth of use. I was kinda disappinted. Is pilling on linen normal?

18 x 30 would be great but I’ve got to put my vote in for leaving it at 60″. Imagine, quilt bindings with fewer seams!

What great fabric! Love it! I like having larger fabric choices when shopping. Keeping it at the full 60” seems appealing to me!

I’d love the 18×30 size, personally… perfect for all the Zakka stuff in the Japanese Craft books I’ve been hoarding!

I’ve always wanted to try it, but I can’t get linen locally, and I have no idea what to look for so that it’s comparable to the kind used in the books!

Thanks so much! Where are you going to write a book?

Another vote for the fat quarter as well as offering full yardage. I think it’s great you found a good linen source. It’s hard to find the right thing when you’re just looking for plain natural linen. I love the linen + patchwork look…

Oh, and the starling print is TO DIE FOR! :-) Love … love … love…

    October 17, 2008 | 4:32 pm

I’ll pop in with a vote for the 18″x30″ size as well. I haven’t used much linen in the past because of quality or price issues, but that looks like something I’d like to check out. And I’ve wondered about the Portabellopixie Patterns before, they sure do look nice. I like that they include such a wide range of sizes. And what cutie pie models!

I’ve only just recently been introduced to small squares of linen in a quilt, and I think it really adds something special. FQ size (or 18X30) would be GREAT! And it would be great to mix them in with other FQ sets.

The new linen sounds lovely! I’m the kinda gal that always buys in half or full yards, but that’s probably inexperience talking. I’d love to try it, though

    October 17, 2008 | 5:30 pm

while I like the idea of having a smaller size option available I would also love to see it left at the 60″ length. The coloring for that linen btw looks amazing!

  44. Jennifer
    October 17, 2008 | 5:30 pm

I think fat quarters would be great! I love both fat quarters and half yards. I also like charms squares (5×5), but that may be more appropriate for other fabrics – not so much linen.

  45. Christina
    October 17, 2008 | 5:47 pm

I love the idea of offering the linen in smaller sizes. I wouldn’t mind having a fat quarter or two of these types of fabrics. I’m so glad you are willing! What about another option of a half yard cut a different way…say cut on the fold so that you had a piece that was 36″ x 30″. Then you have a nice sized piece for a little bigger project. As a side note, I was so excited when I saw one of your patterns in a local quilt shop today (Vancouver, WA)!

I love the idea of offering the linen in smaller cuts. I’m so glad you are thinking of doing this. What about also offering a half yard cut a different way, say on the fold so that you have a piece 36″ x 30″. This would allow for more fabric for projects that require a little more width. A different distribution of the fabric, if you will. On a side note, I wa so excited to see one of your patterns in a local fabric shop today!

I love the idea of a fat quarter in linen! Have you thought about carrying other colors? It is so hard to find good quality linen, especially in colors. I also like the idea of leaving it at it’s full length. When I fall in love with a fabric, I want a lot of it!

    Linen! LINEN! Starling! STARLING!

    Both utterly gorgeous.

The smaller size would be useful, as a 60″ strip may be a bit unwieldy.
