Book Review: Seams to Me: 24 New Reasons to Love Sewing by Anna Maria Horner

Oct 16th, 2008 by Kathy

I’m so excited to be offering Anna Maria Horner’s new book Seams to Me: 24 New Reasons to Love Sewing for give away. Remember when I made the pledge to give away all the gratis books I received from publishers? Fortunately for all of us, two copies of the book arrived yesterday, one from the publisher and my pre-order from Amazon. Ethical dilemma disaster avoided.

Equal parts inspiration, sewing fundamentals, and fresh patterns, I thoroughly enjoyed sitting down and reading every page of Anna Maria’s first book. In the introduction she shares some thoughts on writing the book and her preference that she “would rather just invite you here for the day to show you how to make something.” She further writes “My greatest hope for this collection of projects, ideas, tips and tutorials is that you’ll feel as though you have been here and also that you would want to come back.” This guiding philosophy is evident throughout the book.

Anna Maria’s love of sewing comes to life as the pages are turned. An easy going writing style creates a warm and inviting tone that compels one to make another cup of tea and continue chatting. Groceries and laundry can wait till tomorrow.

New sewists will find the chapters on sewing basics to be a fabulous learning tool. It’s comprehensive and well written.

The second part of Seams to Me is jam packed with projects organized into 4 categories: Organize, Stylize, Decorate, and Domesticate. The book includes full sized pattern pieces for 10 of the 24 projects.

The clothing projects are especially fun and unique. I’m always inspired by the way Anna Maria mixes prints and colors in her clothing designs. The Smashing Smock for grown up girls and the Bo Peep Skirt and Prarie Blouse for the little ones are several of my favorites.

Color theory is tossed like sprinkles throughout the book. A section up front is devoted to the basics. Each project contains Anna Maria’s color notes. A peek into the creative mind of someone so very talented at mixing a palette.

And if all that wasn’t enough to Wow, the photography credit for the book is none other than Anna Maria Horner herself.

Yes, I felt as though I’d spent the day hanging out with Anna Maria in her studio, watching her work and listening to her thoughts on the craft of sewing. Seams to Me: 24 New Reasons to Love Sewing is a grand achievement and sure to inspire your creative muse.

***

I’ll draw a name for this book on Monday, October 20. Leave a comment telling me one reason you love to sew!

I’m a visual person so I love combining colors and patterns.

I cannot wait to get Anna Maria’s book! I love to sew for so many reasons. One of the “big” ones is probably because it relaxes me and gives me a sense of accomplisment (which is why sometimes I do smaller projects so I can see the accomplishment quickly!)

  3. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:20 am3Abby

I love to sew because I’m usually making gifts for people and there’s just something about giving away something that’s been a part of you - your time and creativity -to someone you love!

  4. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:20 am4Ulla V.

I have several reasons for sewing!

But the greatest pleasure is the time spent on the sewing process. It’s so relaxing and gives you a wonderful feeling of creating :0)

  5. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:21 am5Ellen Patton

I love to sew because I love to create things that are original!

  6. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:21 am6Julie

I love to sew because “creating” something…whether sewing, writing, cooking, etc. brings me joy and makes me feel like me!

  7. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:21 am7Shawn

It’s the feeling of creating with your hands … and what I put together looks like nothing you can buy in stores … that makes it all worthwhile!

  8. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:22 am8Janel

I love to sew because it gives me a great feeling of accomplishment making something from virtually nothing. Also, I like unique, one-of-a-kind items.

  9. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:23 am9Michele C

Count me in. I have had the book on my Amazon wish list to remind me to get it when it comes out. I’ll wait now and see if my name gets drawn first. I love to sew because it allows me to get all my creative energy into one project, color, needlework, assembly, fit, personality. — Michele

I love sewing because I can make exactly what I want. Color combo, size, and finish. I also feel relaxed when I am working with my hands.

  11. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:24 am11kyrie

I love to sew because my little girls are thrilled with every result! It’s so satisfying to have fans ;)

  12. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:25 am12Sandy

I love to sew!!! I love to make hand-made gifts and the feeling I get when I finish a project.

  13. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:25 am13Esther

I love to sew because it is a type of art (or object-making) that I can do at home, no matter how small my apartment!

  14. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:25 am14Kim

One of the main reasons I love to sew is that I feel connected to my grandmother when I sew. And I like that connection.

  15. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:25 am15Christy

Why do I love to sew? It gives me a creative outlet that can be both easy, or challenging! I can make something simple, and easy that gives me a sense of gratification….or I can make something intensely detailed that teaches me new skills and drives me to go into new directions…and then I get the a-ha! of accomplishment when it’s completed. I love A.M. Horner’s style, and am excited to see this new aspect of her!

  16. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:25 am16Eileen S

I first started sewing when I was little and making clothers for my troll doll and I haven’t stopped since. It such a creative pastime. You can play with color and patterns and have something productive at the end. Sometimes I arrange my material for a quilt project in a bowl (like a bouquet) and just look at for months :

  17. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:26 am17Rachelle

I love sewing because I love fabrics and fibers. It is a wonderful way to be creative. I also love making personalized handmade gifts for my family. I hope they can feel the love that goes into each gift! :)

  18. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:26 am18Woody

I love to sew because in the sewing room I can escape from the world and do something creative.

  19. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:27 am19Sara

I hadn’t heard of this book. it looks great!

I love to sew b/c I can make tailored clothes that actually fit my 4′10″ frame that don’t look like they came from the kids’ department.

  20. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:27 am20Jan

I love to sew because I can make something that looks different than what you can buy in the stores. And if I’m making something for someone, it gives me a chance to think about that person as I’m sewing……..

  21. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:29 am21ayumills

Oh my goodness!! I was waiting for this book to come out really badly!!! It looks like the book is full of interesting and unique ideas!!
I can barely wait until I turn a page!

A reason I love to sew.. I can create my very original things that could last forever. and simply sewing time is such a fun time!

  22. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:29 am22Erica

I love to sew because I love to create, especially soft things :)

  23. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:29 am23Alissa

How exciting! I’ve been so looking forward to having this book. Winning it in a give away would be even better! I love to sew because I’m completely in the moment as I work. From picking fabrics to the final stitches - there’s such calm satisfaction to it.

  24. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:30 am24Jennifer

I love to sew because it is a way to give unique/personal gifts.
    Smiles!

  25. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:30 am25Amanda

I love to sew because it relaxes me. It is a way for me to be creative away from my three munchkins.

  26. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:31 am26Evelyn

I love to sew because it’s both creative and pragmatic. I can make something beautiful and unique and useful, all at the same time!

  27. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:31 am27Coralee

only one reason? Sewing is an outward expression of my inner self…I can be creative and give a piece of myself away in all of my projects. Sewing, although fairly new to me, has become a favorite creative expression for me.

  28. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:31 am28Cheryl

I don’t know how to sew…yet. I want to learn so I can make beautiful quilts like that last photo. And maybe a few pillows, too.

  29. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:31 am29Jeanne

I’m a novice sewer (but longtime reader) and I don’t have many projects under my belt. My friend’s mother passed away over 7 years ago, and still I have so many reminders of her from her sewing projects she gave to me and my family. I recently discovered beautiful pillowcases she made and cross-stitched, that I had never used. I want to make them into pillowcases for her granddaughters (who she never met). I want to make things that my daughters will love and remember that I made for them with love. I too want to put some love in my gifts.

  30. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:32 am30Kathleen

    I love to sew because I can! I can’t so puzzles so I don’t. I can’t knit so I don’t. BUT, I CAN sew!!

  31. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:33 am31Amy Wathen

The book looks SO inspiring! Taking bits and pieces and turning them into something beautiful and useful feeds my creativity and is very freeing to me!

  32. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:34 am32Kim

I love to sew because it empties my head and I’m always relaxed when I’m creating…….and I have a reason to go to fabric and haberdashery shops!

  33. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:34 am33meg

The combination of playing with all the pretty colors and then using them to create something useful is more than I can resist. I’m still a little surprised by just how much I love to sew!

This book looks like a lot of fun; thanks for the peek!

  34. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:36 am34Jennie

It’s fun! There are few things more satisfying and fun than sitting at the sewing machine creating something out of fabric.

  35. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:37 am35Jennifer (mom of four)

Sewing is like therapy for me. It only costs me the material and my time and when I am done with a project I just feel great! Love your blog and your shop!

  36. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:41 am36Valerie

I love to sew because I can take a pattern and make it my own, and I love creating with fabric. Thanks for doing the giveaway!

  37. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:41 am37Angela

For me, sewing is like being able to touch colors. I love looking at a beautiful fabric and winding it around my hand to help determine what it would be good for, then finally feeding it through my machine to watch the creation take shape.

  38. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:41 am38Ico

I love sewing!Yesterday, I was looking for this book to buy it on line because I want to learn more and more!!!Since I’ve got the sewing machine at home I can’t stop to make projects!

  39. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:43 am39lindamade

I love to sew because it makes all the stresses of the world go away.

  40. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:43 am40Lili

Reading through the comments, it seems like I love to sew and create for the very same reasons of so many others. For me, I love supporting local business and sewing is just an extension of that. I love being able to create something perfectly that can’t be found anywhere else.

  41. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:44 am41Marissa

I love to sew for many reasons, but one of the biggest is that I love seeing the process and then the compleation of it all. It gives me a feeling of accoplishment that I can do so many different things with some fabric, time and a creative mind. Anna’s book looks wonderful I hope I win!

  42. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:46 am42Michelle

I’m an accountant who typically works more than 40 hours a week… Sewing is one of the few ways I can engage that whole right side of my brain…it’s actually a creative outlet that I can do decently (versus drawing - no way!). Love to win the book (that’s the left brain geek talking there). :)

  43. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:46 am43Julie

I love all the options of so many different types of fabrics. I get overwhelmed at times with how many options there are. I also like sewing because it makes me think of my mom, who is an amazing sewer. I can only dream of being as good as her, but I am glad I started this new craft last year. SO much to learn. And most importantly I love making things for other people and now I can add sewing to my list of crafts I can do for others.

  44. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:47 am44calamity kim

I can’t wait to see this book! I would love to have a bookcase dedicated to all my favorite Bloggers! Anna Maria for President!!! She’d be colorful and ever so stylish!
Thanks for doing a giveaway! That’s really nice of you!

  45. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:47 am45Sara

I didn’t realize how badly I need this book!! (need, with me, is always used loosely, but not in this case)

I love sewing because I feel it empowering to make something new out of raw materials. Don’t get me wrong, I love buying (and bathing in) new fabric, but the projects I find most rewarding are those that come from supplies I already have at home. Plus, I love that doing what I love inspires and brings joy to others. It’s a win-win.

  46. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:47 am46sarah

I love to create. I love to give my creation to an unsuspecting friend who just had a baby, or is getting married. That’s the best part.

  47. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:48 am47wendy

I love sewing because as a new mom there’s never any sense of finishing of anything. And it’s something that’s entirely my own - I can sit down for a half hour or so and actually have a finished product at the end. It’s strangely satisfying and fulfilling :D

  48. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:48 am48Tonya

I am a new sewer, but I can’t get enough. I love it because it gives me the opportunity to hold something in my hands that I created. I have been sewing blankets for my two daughters (2 mos and 2 years) and I am just about to take on the challenge of making clothes for them.

  49. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:49 am49Edie

I love to sew because I love taking an idea through all the stages until it become a reality (even, and maybe even especially, as it evolves along the way).

  50. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:49 am50Andrew

I love to sew because I can make all sorts of crazy, one of a kind creations for my wife, daughter and puppies!!

  51. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:50 am51nova

I love to sew because it makes me think outside of the box. It’s the only time that I actually enjoy math. Also, the producing things by hand thing is pretty sweet too.

  52. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:50 am52Jen

Oh wow, thanks for previewing some of the pages! I’ve been meaning to get over to the bookstore and have a look at this one. That Bo Peep skirt is too cute!

  53. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:51 am53bitterbetty

I love to sew because it makes me feel very clever. I guess it is the way that good cooks probably feel clever. To take ingredients and combine them to a finished project is a never ending source of amazement and satisfaction.

  54. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:51 am54Audrey

I love the process of cutting up fabric and creating something useful and beautiful with it. I feel productive and it (usually) is extremely relaxing.

  55. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:52 am55Amanda

    Sewing=me time.
    Love that.

  56. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:54 am56Missy

I love to sew because it helps me to calm down from a crazy day and sort my thoughts. I love to see the things I create come together like magic!

  57. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:54 am57Marianne

I love to sew because I love to create. Making something is a reflection of God’s creation in Genesis–and He also looked at his creation and called it “good!”

  58. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:55 am58Robin

Sewing for me is pure meditation. The work, the world, the chaos, all of it is shut out for five minutes or five hours while I dive into planning, measuring, cutting, pinning, pressing, sewing. Once I emerge from my sewing sabbatical I’ve usually come to a decision or otherwise worked out whatever problem I took into the room with me.

Over the past two years, with parenting challenges, marriage challenges, family challenges, and fertility challenges, sewing kept me sane.

  59. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:56 am59Lisa

I love to sew because my grandmother did. I grew up wearing all handmade dresses and thought they were the best. My only regret about having two sons is that I can’t make little dresses for them like she did for me.

I just saw this book listed at Amazon yesterday and added it to my wishlist. I’d SO much rather win it!

  60. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:57 am60ColleenM

Sewing is an escape for me. I love taking a piece of material and transforming it into something useful.

  61. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:58 am61Rebecca

sewing is life-giving for me. I expend creative energy and get filled up in return.

  62. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:58 am62Alisa

Only one reason? :-) I love to create, it relaxes me and I like how it doesn’t get undone as soon as you are finished (like dishes, laundry and cooking!)

  63. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:58 am63Lindsay

hmm. i must admit that my love to sew really stems from me needing something to do with the loads of fabric that i have a slight addiction to buying. the textures and prints are my first love. the sewing part - giving the beautiful fabric a permanant home to be admired and loved by everyone else.
    love, lindsay

  64. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:58 am64domoshar

Thank you for showing these pages, the book looks great!
I like the creative part a lot and the practical - using the creation to wear, gift or decorate is an rewarding added bonus. The bonus is also quite an excuse to spend more time crafting, when you have lots of different tasks to do instead ;)

  65. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:59 am65Bethany

Ooooohh…the few pages of this book you’ve shared are such eye candy. I can’t wait to see the other beautiful pages. I too love combining different colors & patterns together when I sew & it’s such fun to see how the personality of fabrics change when they’re combined together in a project.

  66. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:00 am66Mette

Wauw, the book seems great! I like sewing, because I like playing with fabric and colours. Sewing makes me calm down and I enjoy sitting alone with the sewing machine. I just forget everthing around me! Which is not always good.

  67. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:01 am67KicsiKato

I was really ill for a few years… I started to sew, because I wanted to do something useful those days… Now I’m fine but sewing means for me the recovery. That’s why I love to sew:))))

Have a really nice day! Hugs from Hungary, Europe

  68. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:03 am68Maren

I love to sew because it gives me a chance to step away from my everyday moments of life with 4 boys (which I LOVE don’t get me wrong=D ) and gives me a chance to create something and feel a great sense of accomplishment. I have sewn a little here and there but have just recently jumped back into it after deciding to take time out for ME! Oh how I’d LOVE LOVE LOVE the BOOK!!

  69. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:05 am69Ellen

I love to sew because it’s my “me time” and being creative, “recharges” my battery after a long day crunching numbers at the office and taking care of my family. I also like making one of a kind things to give as gifts, especially quilts.
I just wish I could find more time to do it!
Not to mention, it means I can BUY more and more fabric!

  70. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:07 am70Amy P

I like to sew because I love feeling like I’ve made something from nothing. Knitting and printing make me feel the same way. Something tangible and useful at the end of the day.

  71. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:09 am71Nichole

I love to sew because it allows me to create something tangible. I also just love the tactile gratification of handling beautiful fabric and the mental possibilities that each yard holds.

  72. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:10 am72Siew

I love, love, love that quilt. And love Anna Maria. How fabulous that book looks and lucky person that gets it (hopefully me!). I love to sew for the instant gratification of I made this. Knitting is my primary craft but so much slower than sewing in producing an end product. Oh, and then there’s the fabric - so much more than I need but who can resist it?

  73. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:11 am73Rona

I love to sew, especially by hand, because things that are hand made have so much more meaning, both for the recipients and the makers. To me, hand made things feel more alive because they have stories and special people connected to them.

  74. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:11 am74megan

I love to sew because it is so satisfying to create something completely original. I looking forward to reading this book.

  75. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:13 am75Kim U

I’ve been waiting to see what some of the projects in the book were - thanks for sharing them! I like to sew as a creative (yet practical) outlet.

  76. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:14 am76Amy

I love to sew (quilt) because it is one way that I am able to be artistic without the result looking like a kindergardener did it…

  77. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:14 am77Stephanie

I love to sew because there a few greater feelings than standing back and admiring the thing you just made with your own hands and thoughts.

  78. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:17 am78Lil

I love to sew because it is so relaxing after my tough job and because I have a million opportunities to be creative and crate my own style

  79. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:18 am79Tricia

I work at a computer all day long. When I can make something with my hands–something real and tangible–it feels like my brain is getting a back rub.

  80. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:20 am80Amber

Oh my goodness - that book is fantastic! I love to sew - it feels so wonderful creating something out of fabric - something that you made yourself and put your love and energy into.

  81. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:20 am81anne

Ooh, I would put this book to good use! Sewing is my favorite, because it’ s a perfect blend of creativity and mechanical skill. I love that it uses both halves of my brain.

  82. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:21 am82Joanna

Hmmmm why do I love to sew? So many reasons but you want just one. Well I suppose it comes down to seeing my daughter wearing something I have made confirms my love for her - that instead of easily buying something at the store, I take hours out of my life to lovingly make her something that will make her smile. The same goes for the quilts I make. I could buy some artwork and hang it on the wall. But that’s too easy and too common. Instead I spend days and weeks making wallhangings to adorn my walls because I love my home and family so much - we deserve something more than the 19.99 art print on a shelf in the store. So I think that could be the single best reason for sewing!

  83. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:21 am83Sarah Jackson

My goodness - look at all the people!

I love to sew because for me it combines creativity and precision in the same activity, as well as giving me a tangible (and hopefully beautiful) result. I’m not a free form creative person, so sewing is perfect for me - it imposes the structure I need on my creative impulses.

  84. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:22 am84allison

I am excited about this book, already on my “wish list”. I love to sew because I love the process of creating.

  85. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:25 am85Carrie

Thanks for a great book review. Sewing, particularly quilting, allows me to be creative everyday and makes me ever more confident to expand my skills.

  86. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:25 am86Libby

I love to sew because I get to express myself and make beautiful things. Not to mention warm, colorful, useful things :)

  87. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:26 am87Tiffany

I just recently got my first sewing machine so I’m excited to get started! I want to be able to make my own clothes and feel the satisfaction that comes from that.

  88. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:26 am88Laura

    I love to sew …

to create something 3-dimensional from a two dimensional piece of fabric.

To bring colour to the world.

To make a thing of beauty, or practicality, or fun.

Because I can. And I’m grateful to be able to.

  89. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:28 am89Caroline

Enter me please! I need to get copies of this book for three people for Christmas presents!

  90. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:28 am90Emily

This has been on my wish list since it had no cover art on Amazon! I love to sew because somehow it gets me back to a simpler time when I sit there with just some fabric, needle, and thread.

  91. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:29 am91Kristi

I LOVE fabric. Sewing gives me a reason to buy more!

  92. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:30 am92Caroline

And the reason I love to sew is the joy I get from creating. I love watching the project come to life before my eyes!

(sorry I hit the submit button too soon the first time)

  93. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:31 am93katrin

    only one reason?
… because it’s time spent quiet and creative
… because it’s avoiding housework in a “productive” way
    … because I can’t do anything else.

I already pre-ordered at amazon and I await my copy any day, so please don’t include me into the drawing - someone else should have the chance.
but thanks for sharing some insights! :)

Lately, it has been such a release for the creative juices I have been feeling. I am drawn more and more to fabric everyday! What a great giveaway and book recommendation. Thanks!

  95. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:33 am95Lina B

This looks like a great book! I love to sew because its engaging but relaxing at the same time, and I love making things for my family.

  96. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:33 am96Donita

I love fabric, the colors, the possiblities and then the finished product when you create something with your own hands!

  97. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:33 am97Diane

I love to sew because I just love creating something wonderful out of fabric! Sewing and creating is in my blood! My father designed and made furniture and reupholstered furniture since before I was born. So I get my talent from him. Would love to win a copy of this book!
    Have a Blessed Day,
    Diane

  98. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:37 am98Kelly G

It is my sanity! Plain and simple. I don’t really understand why, but all the stress goes away when I touch the fabric and start to make something.

  99. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:38 am99melissa

i don’t know if i’m quite at the ‘love to sew’ point but i’m getting there-i’m teaching myself and the process is going slowly. mostly i love the fabrics…so much possibility!

  100. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:40 am100terriaw

thanks for the great book review! My copy should arrive tomorrow. I personally love to sew because it gives me the freedom to express myself and just be myself. I also love fabric and making things!

  101. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:40 am101Elizabeth Holcombe

I love to sew because it centers me. Sounds silly, I know, but my days are so off kilter and tilted that sitting down to sew puts everything in perfect order~~~My zen :)~~~XXOO, Beth

  102. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:42 am102ROBIN

As the mom of 3 teenage boys, there’s not much “pretty” or “cute” in my house! I love fabric and color - sewing allows me to take my passion for those two and create something pretty, cute, fun, and exciting.

  103. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:49 am103karen

I love to sew because I feel like it’s an excellent outlet for my creative side.

  104. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:51 am104John

Thanks for the review! I’d love to win this book for some new ideas and inspiration!

  105. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:52 am105John

oooops … forgot my reason! For me, it’s just really fulfilling to have a creative outlet … and because I love to give away the things I’ve made.

  106. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:55 am106Stephanie

Wow, that book looks fabulous!!!! I love to sew because I love being able to have exactly what I want, in the colors I want and have it fit whoever I’m making it for.

  107. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:59 am107Stephanie

This is my first peek into the book and I am so excited to get my hands on this book!!! I love to sew because there is no greater feeling than seeing my kids wear something I made them or drag around their favorite “night-night” made by mommy.

  108. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:00 am108Mama Urchin

It looks like another book I need to add to my Christmas list.

  109. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:06 am109Liz

I love to sew because it mines I’m using all the gorgeous fabrics I buy- not just looking at them :)

  110. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:06 am110Rebekah

Fun! My first quilt was made out of AMH’s Bohemian line and I’ve been a fan ever since.

  111. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:12 am111Jennifer

Oh my, I can’t wait to get my hands on that book! It looks beautiful! I’m really crossing my fingers for this giveaway :).
I love sewing because it incorporates so many of my loves - I love working with my hands, I love letting the creative juices flow, I love having a tangible end result to my work, and I even love the mathematical aspect of sewing. I’m such a nerd! :) But most of all, I love sewing because it allows me to give meaningful gifts to my family and friends. They are always so thrilled to open a handmade gift, sewn with love. That makes the broken needles, weary eyes, ripped and re-ripped seams all worth it.

  112. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:13 am112~k

I began to sew to find a new hobby for myself. But now I love to sew because I am able to make items that I not only need, but that I Love.

  113. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:15 am113susan

Sewing is a great stress reliever. Just the other day I was all bummed about some things and decided I would sew a bit on a quilt. And with each run through my machine I felt that stress start to melt away as I focused on the fabric. Thats one reason I love sewing.

  114. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:15 am114Amanda

Why I love to sew is an easy one… my daughters love to design so I get to sew the things they want turned from sketches into reality. Soon I will love to sew because it means I am sewing with them instead of for them.

  115. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:19 am115Samantha

I can be such a bad shopper. I get an idea in my mind and can’t let it go, so if the store doesn’t have what I want, I’m in trouble! When I sew, I can get exactly the look and fit that I want. It’s extremely satisfying! And there’s nothing like wrapping your daughters in something you’ve made just for them…

I’m so excited about AM’s new book. I know it is going to be a favorite! I’d love to win a copy. :-)

  116. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:19 am116Becky

I love to sew because then I end up with something that is different from what everyone else has.

  117. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:21 am117mj

I love sewing because then everything I make can be completely unique!

  118. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:25 am118mariarrosa

I like to sew because I love fabric, thread, needles… I like to sew because it is a pleasure.

  119. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:27 am119myrnie_twin

Oh dear. The truth? I think I love to sew because I love making things that most people would assume need to be purchased. It’s like “sticking it” to the system :) Is that bad??

  120. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:30 am120Carrie

I love to sew because of the instant gratification. I love that I can sit down at my machine for an hour or two and walk away with something beautiful (theoretically :0) ).

  121. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:32 am121Oiyi

I love to sew because it gives me time to be alone and to create. I feel reenergized after completing a project.

  122. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:33 am122Nancy

    Sewing is my oxygen.

  123. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:36 am123Violet

I love to sew for so many reasons, but if I had to narrow it down, I would say that it makes me feel connected to my mother, my grandmother, my great-grandmother, and countless other women, I get great satisfaction from the act of creating, and in a time of rapid globalization, I feel ethically and spiritually compelled to resist mass produced items, cheap items made by exploited labor.

    The book looks lovely!

  124. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:38 am124Simone

I love to sew because it makes me whole again. It is where I can sit, do things I love, create something and see (mostly) sudden results. Somehow sewing helps me to regain sanity after a long day with my kids - which I dearly love.

  125. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:38 am125planetjune

I love to sew because I can make something unique and make it exactly the way I want it (well, in theory I can - I need some to get more practice!)

  126. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:42 am126Lisa

i sew because it’s generally faster than knitting and sometimes you need faster!

  127. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:42 am127Cara

So much of my life is spent on high intensity efforts that don’t necessarily give me tangible results, and if they do they are a long time coming. I like the feeling of accomplishment I get from taking a few pieces of fabric and some thread to create something new that will make me or someone I love happy.

  128. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:42 am128karissa

I love to sew because I like being creative and it feels good to create things that others like also!

  129. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:43 am129Chris

I love to sew for a couple of reasons. One is that I have this need to be creative and having loved textiles all my life I get giddy when I take a bunch of floppy pieces of cloth and give them life. The second reason is that my Mom was a sewing teacher and seamstress her whole life. She is gone now but sewing keeps me connected to her in some invisible way.

  130. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:49 am130mary grace

crafting and sewing is my relaxant… my way to de-stress at the end of a hard day at work. i work in an stressful environment and i need a way to unwind at the end of a day, whether that’s making a quilt or cross-stitching my latest project… it’s my way of forgetting the stress and remembering the important things :)

  131. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:51 am131Kelly

I love to sew….because I CAN sew! Anyone can walk into a department store and buy a new skirt. I can CREATE a skirt that reflects my true sense of self. I love to sew garments, but I also really love to sew quilts! There is just something sooooooo magical when a quilt is finished. I love running my fingers over the seams. The bumps, the smooth cotton. The WHOLE “Squish Factor” that a quilt offers. Sewing is a wonderful thing.

  132. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:54 am132Rae

First off, I love your blog! It is always an inspiration to me. What a wonderful book! I grew up in a house where my mother did not sew and I did not learn until I was in my mid-20’s. It has been such a humbling yet elating experience. I mess up so many times, continue to learn from my mistakes and am so awed to see the items I have created!

  133. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:56 am133Rhonda

Anna Maria Horner is one of my largest contemporary inspirations. I love sewing because I am a visual thinker and learner, and like to mentally deconstruct and reconstruct items I come across — whether it’s a bag or bridge! Sewing is the culmination of the plans and images that run around in my head all day. And best of all, sewing has no borders…And is great for presents!

  134. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:58 am134molly

I love to sew because I am able to create things that are unique. Such a nice bonus in what seems to be such a mass produced, cookie cutter world! I also love to sew because it makes gift giving all that more fun. The best part is thinking about the recipient the whole time you are making something for them.

  135. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:02 pm135Kristin L

Wow! So many comments! Pink Chalk is growing :-)

I love to sew because it gives me great pleasure to make something out of nothing (or nearly nothing). I also love the flexibility it gives me to have something just the way I like it rather than settle for the colors or patterns on the store bought versions.

  136. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:04 pm136Jeannie

I love to sew. I find it meditative, relaxing, and expressive. I take joy in finding colors of cloth that “work” together in harmony. I find that creating gifts brings not only the receiver joy, but I find joy in the creating and watching the faces light up. Perhaps if more heads of state sewed, there would finally be peace in the world. Have a great weekend. Cheers

  137. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:10 pm137Maren

I love to sew - because- when I sew I feel my grandma sitting right next to me.

  138. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:11 pm138Kerry Bogert

    I wanna win!!
One reason I love sewing is the coming together of patterns. It lends itself to satisfing my ocd inclined brain that like straight lines and at the same time I get to let my colorfully creative side go a little nutty sometimes too.

I love to sew because it reminds me that two human hands are capable of creating beauty. Two human hands can take simple materials and transform them into something useful. Two human hands can create something unique, one of a kind and special. I sew because it reminds me I am capable, creative and contributing something beautiful to the world.

  140. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:17 pm140rohanknitter

I love to sew because I can make something totally unique, that can’t be bought in any store.

  141. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:19 pm141HobbyMommy

I love to sew because sewing makes me happy and well balanced!

  142. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:25 pm142Janet

    I love to sew because–
    a) it’s a skilll that I learned many, many years ago from from mother and it has stayed with me all these years.
    b) it’s a skill that I am trying to pass on to my daughters (in fact I think either of them would totally enjoy this book!)
    c) it’s a skill that I actually feel that I am pretty good at! but I would love to learn more!

  143. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:27 pm143Sarah

Oh my, this book looks amazing, not that I expected any less from AMH! I love to sew because I love see something inspiring and turning it into my own version…

  144. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:29 pm144Kathryn

Ooh! I’ve been dying for this book to come out! I love to sew because it makes me feel good. (On so many levels.) Thanks for sharing.

  145. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:30 pm145jenn

I love to sew because it makes me appreciate things more. when you put all that work into making something you are sure to take care of it! it also makes me feel so good when someone loves something that I made. and you know that you can’t find one just like it anywhere else!

  146. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:33 pm146Lisa K.

I love to sew because it is like breathing to me. I must sew! :D

  147. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:36 pm147Jodie

My mom passed on her love of sewing to me and my sister. Sewing to me means family. I will be forever greatful to her for sharing with us what she loves so much.

  148. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:37 pm148Amy Hodge

I love to sew because of the satisfaction of seeing something lovely come to life with my own two hands. Congrats on having a copy of this to keep for yourself! ;)

  149. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:39 pm149Nichole

I enjoy doing something that has a lasting end product. I love the idea of a quilt being snuggled yours from now or the next generation of little ones wearing hand-me-downs.

  150. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:41 pm150JennyC.No3

I’d love to get my hands on this book - how lovely!

  151. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:43 pm151ann

WOW! You say comment and look at your commentee’s list!!!! I love to sew…… have been sewing for 45 years! yikes, how can that be? when i ‘retired’ 2 years ago, my love for sewing was renewed. Not only did i sew as a child, a teenager, a mom, and now as a crafter, looking for fun stuff to create and piece together! Your blog has gotten me fired up with ideas and inspiration! In fact, i just finished my Snow People garland today and trying to figure out who gets it for Christmas! Note: the Snow People garland is from the Quilting Arts issue! Yes, I LOVE TO SEW and my friends are so happy when they see what’s new in my sewing nest!!! ME, ME, ME! i love to sew the best!!!!

  152. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:43 pm152Lisa

Seeing this sneak peek makes me want this book even more. Anna Maria’s fabrics are one reason I recently took up sewing. I would love to learn her tips and techniques. I love to sew because it gives me such a sense of accomplishment & I love making something one-of-a-kind/a potential heirloom.

  153. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:46 pm153Carol

I love the look, feel, smell and magic of fabric and fibers!

  154. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:46 pm154Patrice

I love everything about sewing! I love choosing a project, picking the perfect fabric for it and putting it all together!!!

  155. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:48 pm155Kelley

Thanks for showing us a sneak peek — it’s beautiful!

I love to sew because there’s something so satisfying in creating something from just a little.

  156. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:53 pm156Amber@MMM

I love the satisfaction sewing brings. Both in creating something useful with my own hands and in carrying on the heritage of sewing I have been blessed with.

  157. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:56 pm157Jen Eskridge

Oooh- I hope I win!!! I love to sew as a means to express my creative outlet- and still have something great to show for it. Creativity is my therapy, sewing is the chosen outlet. ~jen~

  158. on 16 Oct 2008 at 12:58 pm158Rashmi

Its therapy for me…….it keeps me sane:)

I love to sew because I love the feeling of creating something beautiful!

  160. on 16 Oct 2008 at 1:03 pm160Michelle

I’m just getting back into sewing after many years. I find it totally relaxing and love creating unique things!

  161. on 16 Oct 2008 at 1:03 pm161Jody

One reason I love to sew is because then I have a reason to buy more fabric!

  162. on 16 Oct 2008 at 1:10 pm162Kati

I sew because it keeps me sane in the craziness that is my life!

  163. on 16 Oct 2008 at 1:11 pm163Lauren

I love to stay up late at night sewing, in a quiet house with just the hum of the machine. I just love to make things!

  164. on 16 Oct 2008 at 1:11 pm164Violet

Well, I’m still a beginner but I sew because I love to be creative, try new things and love seeing the end result. It might not be perfect but I made it.

  165. on 16 Oct 2008 at 1:15 pm165Andrea M.

I love to sew because I enjoy the feeling of making something pretty/fun/useful from just a flat piece of fabric! I still am sometimes surprised when my project turns out well, and I can say “I made that”. A very gratifying hobby. Plus, I find sewing very relaxing. Would love to have Anna Maria’s new book. It’s been on my Amazon wishlist for a long time! Catchy title!

  166. on 16 Oct 2008 at 1:18 pm166Meghan

Wow, this sounds like a great book! I love to sew because I love seeing my son enjoy what I create for him! I only hope my 4 month old enjoys my wonky creations like his big brother!

  167. on 16 Oct 2008 at 1:21 pm167Lotta

I love to sew for my little ones because the sight of them snug and warm or cool and stylish in something I made (and even designed?) is so very satisfactory.

If I get picked I really, really hope you’re willing to ship overseas …

  168. on 16 Oct 2008 at 1:25 pm168Mary

I can’t be limited to just one reason! I love to sew because my mom sews, my grandmother sews, my sister sews…. Makes me feel connected. I also LOVE taking materials new to me (but maybe not to someone else) and repurposing, remaking them into something beautiful, useful, and complete!

  169. on 16 Oct 2008 at 1:29 pm169avery

Sewing gently shushes my always-gabbing mind.

  170. on 16 Oct 2008 at 1:29 pm170nicole

Sewing gives me a sense of accomplishment and fulfills the creative urge.

  171. on 16 Oct 2008 at 1:32 pm171Cristie B

I love to sew for a lot of reasons. The biggest reason is probably the sense of accomplishement it brings, seeing my little ones run around in something I made for them.

  172. on 16 Oct 2008 at 1:35 pm172Jamie

I like making things that are in just the right color with the right style.

  175. on 16 Oct 2008 at 1:47 pm175Janet

I love the colors of fabric and putting them together to create something beautiful and useful. It’s so comforting!

I love to sew because it is oh so satisfying to make something for someone you love or for yourself. Plus it gives me the chance to get the creative juices flowing! :-P

  177. on 16 Oct 2008 at 1:54 pm177Pat

I love to sew because it is so relaxing for me and it takes me to another place… I can forget everything and create. Love the book!

  178. on 16 Oct 2008 at 1:54 pm178kristine hanson

I love to sew because I like the feeling of accomplishment when I have finished something….I have been sewing A LOT these past few months, my husband says he thinks it (sewing) is theraputic, I think he is right

  179. on 16 Oct 2008 at 2:03 pm179Grace

I love to sew because I can create a larger garment in about a day–I am really a knitter, so instant gratification is HUGE in sewing. Plus I like that I can custom make stuff (only skirts so far–wrap ones) with the fabric I want and I know that it will fit me! And I LOVE fabrics!

  180. on 16 Oct 2008 at 2:03 pm180Leah

Like so many others, sewing is creative energy for me - sewing both uses and generates energy!

  181. on 16 Oct 2008 at 2:03 pm181Megan

I love to sew because it helps me keep my sanity! Besides, I have a fabric stash now, I need to do something with it!

  182. on 16 Oct 2008 at 2:03 pm182Rachael

I love to sew because: I love the planning - which pattern, design, fabric, notions. I love process - the skills, learning, thinking, analysing. I love the product - unique, satisfying, creative. And I especially love the feeling of gifting something I’ve created!

  183. on 16 Oct 2008 at 2:06 pm183Jill

Several reasons: stress relief, making handmade, creating something with purpose, giving…

  184. on 16 Oct 2008 at 2:14 pm184Chen

I love to sew because it is a great stress reliever. It’s a great escape and often I’m thinking of the person that I’m creating for.

  185. on 16 Oct 2008 at 2:17 pm185Nancy

Colors, textures, using my hands, process, creativity, making, relaxation, fabric, fabric and more fabric… what’s not to like.

  186. on 16 Oct 2008 at 2:28 pm186Selena

I love to sew because I get to go to coffee with really cool people :-) Thanks for today. I feel so inspired.

  187. on 16 Oct 2008 at 2:29 pm187Patty

My mother taught me how to sew. She’s been in heaven for 29 years and I think she would be pleased to know that I’m having fun teaching the boys and girls at the local Boys & Girls Club how to sew. We’re sewing pillowcases next week!

  188. on 16 Oct 2008 at 2:33 pm188shannon

I love to buy fabric! That’s why I love to sew :) And I love giving gifts that are handmade and individual for each person. That book looks fabulous.

  189. on 16 Oct 2008 at 2:37 pm189Louisa

Thanks for sharing your book review with us. That looks like a fantastic book! I love to sew because I enjoy seeing the transformation from fabric to item. I also enjoy helping the kiddos in my life have their creative vision filled.

  190. on 16 Oct 2008 at 2:41 pm190Stacey

I was waiting to see a few pics from this book before I ordered it, but I should have known it was going to look so good. I love sewing because I love creating and making things and giving them away. Plus it’s a great excuse for buying fabric (my real obsession). :)

  191. on 16 Oct 2008 at 2:42 pm191Regina

Aaahhh, sewing. It is such a great creative outlet. The books looks incredibly yummy. Great review!!

  193. on 16 Oct 2008 at 2:43 pm193Krista

I love to sew because I love to sew for other people and give it to them and see the look of happiness on their face! It’s so rewarding.
    Thanks~ Krista

  194. on 16 Oct 2008 at 2:50 pm194Stefanie

I love the pride it gives me. Whenever someone comments on something my daughter is wearing that I made I get this huge smile on my face when I say thank you!

  195. on 16 Oct 2008 at 2:51 pm195Jill

This book is already on my wish list. It looks wonderful. I love to sew because I love fabric and it’s so cool to be able to create something out of a pile of it. I’m not very good at sewing or very patient, but I still love it!

  196. on 16 Oct 2008 at 2:54 pm196julia

So many reasons to love sewing!–I love taking “nothing” or something with no purpose and making it into something fun, useful, lovely, etc. Changing scraps and bits or yards into a new thing!

When I can put those little pieces of fabric together, it helps me put everything about my life into perspective.

  198. on 16 Oct 2008 at 3:01 pm198muralimanohar

I love to sew because I love to make something from nothing. I love the creating process, even more than the result.

  199. on 16 Oct 2008 at 3:05 pm199jessica denny

i love to sew because, though my days are mostly filled with mothering and wife-duties, housework and cooking, this is the one thing in my life that i do JUST FOR ME. i may produce clothes for my children, or quilts for my family, or curtains for my house, but the PROCESS is just for ME.

  200. on 16 Oct 2008 at 3:06 pm200amy

I love to sew because i am amazed every time how a piece of flat fabric can be turned into something that has use! In the words of Project Runway’s Vincent, “It turns me on!”

  201. on 16 Oct 2008 at 3:07 pm201Marie

10 months ago, I had never touched a sewing machine since then I have made my wedding dress, a dress to go to a friend’s wedding, a purse and I am currently working on my 1st quilt.
Sewing keeps my mind engaged and believe me i need it right now.

  202. on 16 Oct 2008 at 3:08 pm202Concha

Sewing is liberating. If you need/want anything, I don’t have to wait until shops have it for sale. Sewing allows you to do want you want and be who you are.

  203. on 16 Oct 2008 at 3:14 pm203Beth

I love how a sewing project comes together so much more quickly than a knitting/crocheting project. The gratification is closer to instant!

  204. on 16 Oct 2008 at 3:20 pm204Sue Cahill

I love to sew because it brings order and sanity to my life while producing something I can give as a gifts that others appreciate!

  205. on 16 Oct 2008 at 3:22 pm205Chante

I love to sew because helps me to release some of my bottled up creativity. Without it (and a bunch of other crafts) I would explode.

  206. on 16 Oct 2008 at 3:32 pm206Andrea

As a Mom, most of my day is spent doing things that are never finished: laundry, dishes, preparing meals, picking up, cleaning, etc. I love sewing for the feeling of accomplishment.

  207. on 16 Oct 2008 at 3:34 pm207kathie

I love to sew because it is one thing I do for myself.
I get such a sense of accomplishment finishing a project and knowing it will be here for a LONG time
not like cleaning the house, by tomorrow would you ever know?
    LOL
The book looks wonderful , the photography and colors are beautiful…
thanks for the opportunity to win this book

  208. on 16 Oct 2008 at 3:39 pm208kylie

I love to sew because it gives me an outlet for creativity , the satisfaction of finishing. Individulisaton of items, I love how in sewing that you can make something stand out by your fabric and colour choice and small tweaks of a pattern.

  209. on 16 Oct 2008 at 3:41 pm209Karin

Peace and calm. That’s why I love to sew. The hum of the machine, the motion of the fabic, even cuttinga dn pinning. It’s lulling.

  210. on 16 Oct 2008 at 3:41 pm210Angie H.

Being able to creat is an inspiration to me. I have been sewing believe it or not since I was 4 years old. I have never tired of it. Thanks for letting me enter.

    Angie

I love to sew but sewing does not like me. I love to make things for my family.

  212. on 16 Oct 2008 at 3:51 pm212Shell

Sewing to me, now a mum of two, means to get lost in my creative forest and enjoy the quietness of it :)

  213. on 16 Oct 2008 at 4:01 pm213Pat

In addition to all the expected reasons for enjoying sewing (the outlet for creativity, ability to make things the way I want them but can’t find ready-made, etc.), I enjoy sewing as it lets my mind escape the worries of my everyday life. I can focus on something else and forget the troubles that are part of my everyday reality…at least for awhile…when sewing. I’d love that book and I think it’s nice that you are giving away books that you get as samples.

  214. on 16 Oct 2008 at 4:13 pm214lindsey

i want that book sooo badly! i love to sew beacuse it gives me more excuses to buy fabric!

  215. on 16 Oct 2008 at 4:16 pm215lissilulu

I love to sew because the clothing that I make for my daughters is something I would never afford to buy from someone else.

  216. on 16 Oct 2008 at 4:17 pm216Nutmegg

I love to sew because what is cooler than taking a flat piece of fabric and turning it into almost anything you can imagine. Alchemy! Also, I can’t NOT sew. I tried. It didn’t work. I love it!

  217. on 16 Oct 2008 at 4:21 pm217Johanna

Sewing is my outlet when I’m tired of dealing with life’s numerous details. I can lose myself in my project and spend hours without realizing it. I don’t know what I’d do without it!

  218. on 16 Oct 2008 at 4:24 pm218Nancy

I love to sew because I get to do exactly what I want, how I want, in the colors I want. It can be as simple as a simple sack or as complex as a winter coat. I get a strong feeling of accomplishment that is different from finishing a work task.

  219. on 16 Oct 2008 at 4:35 pm219Michelle

Oh!! That book is already on my wish list but seeing some of the inside has made me want it sooner! Those skirts make me want to sew right now!

I love to sew for so many reasons including, making something unique, getting to design and, letting my creativity out.

    Crossing my fingers!

  220. on 16 Oct 2008 at 4:44 pm220Karen S

    Looks like a fabulous book!

  221. on 16 Oct 2008 at 4:52 pm221Laura

What a fabulous giveaway–I’d have a hard time parting with this one, too (lucky you had another on the way!). I love to sew because it is practical and creative at the same time. It’s so fulfilling to spend time challenging myself with color, line, and form and then finish up with something that can be used!

  222. on 16 Oct 2008 at 5:01 pm222kelly

Wow. I’ve already got this book on my Amazon Wishlist and your review has convinced me that I absolutely need it! So if I don’t win it here, I’m rushing out to buy it. (But I hope I win it, of course! Who doesn’t like to win books?!)

Why I love to sew: It is so satisfying to finish a project and say, “Wow. I made this!” Every single time I finish making a quilt, I hold it in awe and say, “Wow! I made a blanket!” What a rush!

  223. on 16 Oct 2008 at 5:04 pm223Kim

I love to sew because I don’t worry about those things that seem to weigh on my mind more than they should, I just think about what I’m sewing and enjoy my time - a break from reality for me.

  224. on 16 Oct 2008 at 5:07 pm224Mrs.MK

What a lovely book! The colors are so vibrant and fresh!

Sewing is a fun process that yields functional and beautiful results….which makes it even more fun!

  225. on 16 Oct 2008 at 5:13 pm225becca

because I love to make things for my friends and family and it’s a creative outlet for me

  226. on 16 Oct 2008 at 5:17 pm226Sarah

I love to sew to create special items for my son. He loves for me to sew for him now (he is 5) and may not want me to in the future so I love to make little treats, costumes, clothing and such. I also enjoy making gifts and being able to adorn cheap curtains so they look more expensive or making pillows to accent the home. Thanks for offering this giveaway. I hope I’m lucky enough!

  227. on 16 Oct 2008 at 5:20 pm227Kelly

Great giveaway! When I am sewing, I’m just sewing! I’m not thinking about dinner, laundry, or dust bunnies. I’m thinking about , pattern, color, quilts, dolls, and doll quilts! It’s bliss!

  228. on 16 Oct 2008 at 5:32 pm228Shelly

Sewing is my decompression time at the end of the day after having taken care of my family. It helps me wind down, leave the cares of the day behind and relax.

    I love it!

  229. on 16 Oct 2008 at 5:32 pm229Daphne

Good gravy, that’s a lotta blog responses, Kathy! My favorite part of sewing… hand sewing the detailed bits. I think it’s because it’s toward the end and I can make really tiny stitches.

  230. on 16 Oct 2008 at 5:36 pm230tara

I love sewing because it’s something that’s all my own. I love the creativity, the escape, and the meticulousness required. *sigh* I love it.

  231. on 16 Oct 2008 at 5:38 pm231Ashleigh Thompson

I LOVE to sew!! With two under 3, it is my escape/relaxation. And the sense of accomplishment when I see the girls in the outfits I made. (Oops that is more than one.)

  232. on 16 Oct 2008 at 5:48 pm232Betty

I just started sewing a few months ago but so far, I love sewing for the sense of accomplishment. It’s just incredible to me that I can stand back and say “I *made* that!”. Very cool. :)

  233. on 16 Oct 2008 at 5:51 pm233Rochelle

Well, I am a little late to the drawing, but I just saw this book at the store and drooled over it. I had to put it down until I could make sure we had the funds in the budget for a special splurge! What isn’t there to love about sewing? For me it’s more than just creating and expressing myself. I love to have a million projects all at once that show the frame of mind I’m in. I can have different clothes for my children and myself, bags, gifts, quilts and everything in between. I can choose to do something I can finish right away or a project that will take me a few weeks. I can do all of them all at once and not get overwhelmed or burnt out. I love to give my sewing projects away as gifts the best, it’s unique, special, a bit of me, and people can see that I really do care about them. I could go on for hours. Plus all those different textures from the fabrics! heaven!

  234. on 16 Oct 2008 at 5:58 pm234Jeni

I love to sew because it calms me down. In my studio I let everything fade away and focus on creating. Ahhhh… so good!

  235. on 16 Oct 2008 at 6:03 pm235Heather

    Oooh, what a fantastic giveaway!
I sew because it makes me feel good inside to create something and give it away. The sense of accomplishment at completing a project is amazing and watching someone’s eyes light up when opening a handmade gift is just… a good feeling. It’s a sparkly moment in my day.

  236. on 16 Oct 2008 at 6:05 pm236Amy

My copy arrived yesterday (so this is not an entry for the drawing) but I just wanted to comment on what a wonderful treat this book is. Anna Maria has outdone herself!

P.S. When will you be writing a Pink Chalk book? I’ll definitely preorder!

  237. on 16 Oct 2008 at 6:10 pm237Stacey

Sewing gives me time to spend with my brain, thinking through challenges or good times.

  238. on 16 Oct 2008 at 6:11 pm238dorie

I love to sew because even when it’s all complicated in my mind, it’s simple when I’m seaming. Most of the time. It’s the right combination of wrote task and puzzle solving.

  239. on 16 Oct 2008 at 6:20 pm239Alisa

I guess it’s the flush of pride and thrill of seeing someone I love wearing something I made and that they look gorgeous in it.

  240. on 16 Oct 2008 at 6:28 pm240Melanie

I love watching a project slowly coming together as I work on it. During a project’s planning stages, I can visualize what I’d like it to be, but it’s always a surprise to see how it actually turns out!!!

  241. on 16 Oct 2008 at 6:40 pm241Megan

I love to sew because I can’t draw!

  242. on 16 Oct 2008 at 6:52 pm242Francie

i have always loved sewing (since i was about 10) because i loved being able to make the things i wanted and needed… cool clothes for school? check. quilts when babies came along? check. gifts for friends and family? check. it is the one talent/skill that has served me well throughout my life.

  243. on 16 Oct 2008 at 7:01 pm243Jessica

I’m trying to learn to sew while doing the college thing. I’m hoping to complete a quilting project and an apron by Christmas!

  244. on 16 Oct 2008 at 7:04 pm244Miriam

I love to sew because its much, much cheaper than therapy! Seriously, when I’m sewing I can think through all my “stuff” - and end up with something fabulous to show for it!

  245. on 16 Oct 2008 at 7:38 pm245Denise

I love sewing because it feels great when you have a special homemade piece at the end that you’ve put your heart and time into! It’s an accomplishment (especially for this beginning sewer!).

  246. on 16 Oct 2008 at 7:50 pm246Brittney

I love to sew because it means I can give handmade gifts that were created with love and hard work. The recipients appreciate my efforts too, which makes it very rewarding!

  247. on 16 Oct 2008 at 7:52 pm247Candy

I love to sew because it combines many things I love: color, texture, creating, gift making, etc. It is the perfect all encompassing craft.

  248. on 16 Oct 2008 at 7:52 pm248jessica levitt

I love to sew because it feels like making artwork with a purpose. I love that I can make pretty things AND use the them.

  249. on 16 Oct 2008 at 8:03 pm249Hyena In Petticoats

Wow - the book looks gorgeous - I had no idea it was coming out!

I’d be super keen to learn some more colour theory - I tend to err on the safe side more than I would like to…..

I love to sew for many reasons, but the one that lies deepest in my heart is that I feel like I am fostering a connection with the whole lineage of women, from all ages and eras, who took the time to stitch something together, whether for pleasure or for necessity. I try to learn old techniques for this very reason - to keep alive a skill and technique that has been passed down, woman to woman, over so many years. It makes me feel connected.

I love to sew because I love how I can make my item unique and exactly my style.

  251. on 16 Oct 2008 at 8:20 pm251tricia

why i love to sew? nothing is more satisfying than holding something you’ve made.

  252. on 16 Oct 2008 at 8:32 pm252Kate

I love sewing because it’s a way to create!
And I would love love love love love this book!

  253. on 16 Oct 2008 at 8:32 pm253cind baugh

At 50 years old, I have been sewing since I was 9. That’s 41 years of creativity! i can honestly say I have learned something new each of those years regarding techniques, shortcuts, embellishments, etc. So what’s not to love about sewing?

  254. on 16 Oct 2008 at 8:46 pm254laurel

I love to sew because the magic of creation is my drink and drug.

  255. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:00 pm255char

I love to sew because of that satisfying feeling I get when I see an idea materialize. The more beautiful the fabric, the more delightful the whole process is. And I love to try new things and learn–sewing is synonymous with learning for me.

  256. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:02 pm256Christina

I love sewing for so many different reasons, but I especially love how it melts away all the stress of the day. The creating and problem solving of it all is so relaxing to me.

  257. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:08 pm257Amanda

I love to sew because I adore the satisfaction that comes with creating something on my own. It’s just so rewarding.

  258. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:11 pm258mary

wow that book looks yummy. Will have to check the book store tomorrow.

  259. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:20 pm259Wendy

I sew because I love to see how people react when they receive something that’s handmade.

  260. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:27 pm260Amy @ parkcitygirl

Sewing/creating is like therapy for this tired mommy - it my time to myself :)

  261. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:36 pm261Kristin

I love sewing because it’s meditative (except when you make a mistake, in which case it’s torture). Your mind is freed as you feed the fabric through the feed dogs. And when you’re done, you have something to show for how you spent the time.

  262. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:47 pm262Kathy Sizemore

I like to sew because it gives me such a feeling of accomplishment when I finish something.

  263. on 16 Oct 2008 at 9:49 pm263katie R

My mom always said she “couldn’t sew”. “I break a needle just threading it.” I taught myself at 25 with the help of lovely people with amazing blogs and tutorials like you and Anna Maria. I got hooked quickly because of the amazing colors. I love to sew because I feel so much pride in seeing what I have accomplished. Ps. thanks for being generous

  264. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:01 pm264jan r.

I love to sew because I enjoy creating one of a kind projects for family and friends. It is like giving away a little piece of me.

  265. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:17 pm265Christie

I love to sew, because I think there isn’t anything nicer than something made with love. I also love being able to make something from (almost) nothing, it is a great wat way to recycle which make sme feel like I am doing something good.

  266. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:41 pm266Lisa

I get to be me. Most of the time (and most of my life) I try to fit into a mold that doesn’t work. I have finally found something that validates who I am and what my strengths are.

  267. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:03 pm267Heather

I don’t know why I love tp sew. I just do! I especially love the look of hand sewn stitches. I would love this book. I checked it on the net last night but the postage was almost the same price as the book! AND the 16th of October (the date of your post) was my birthday!!! What a generous give away. Thank you.

  268. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:26 pm268Lesley Lamb

Sewing is creative, artistic and expressive, but for me, the main reason I love to sew is that it is therapuetic. It allows me to escape from an otherwise mad life and recover enought to face it all again! It is achieveable!

  269. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:34 pm269Morgan

    That book looks fabulous!
I love sewing because of the feeling I get when I’ve finished something nobody else has ever made. It’s totally unique, and exactly what I wanted (hopefully! If it turned out like I wanted!).
    Thanks!

  270. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:52 pm270Mariah

I love to sew because I love colors and the process of creating something. Okay. That’s two reasons.

  271. on 17 Oct 2008 at 2:51 am271Claire - Matching Pegs

I love to sew because I crave that feeling of achievement that I get when I finish something I have made with my own hands.

I am a SAHM, which I love, but most of the day I am doing things that I repeat day after day (cook meals, clean).

Sewing makes me feel like I have finished something unique. Even if I make the same thing again, it will be different, because I will use different fabric, of change the pattern.

  272. on 17 Oct 2008 at 3:02 am272Tammi

I also love the creative outlet, the visual and tactile nature of sewing. And I love making gifts, the special joy of spending all that creative time to bring joy to a loved one. I have been sewing for several decades and the wonderful fabrics and inspiration of people like Anna Maria keep it so fresh and new!

  273. on 17 Oct 2008 at 4:02 am273Tine

    There are several reasons….
    1: It’s a major stress-relief
2: I love the sense of accomplishment when I have finished something
3: Sewing quilts, clothes, bags etc for my children is especially rewarding, the other night my daughter was snuggling up in her mom-made quilt saying, it was just like getting hugs from mom!! That just makes my heart sing!
    4: I love fabric!

  274. on 17 Oct 2008 at 4:33 am274sarah

One of the reasons I love to sew is the possibility of personalising every item to suit the recipient. My daughter loves the pajamas I made for her with a skull and crossbones applique which I’d struggle to find in the shops.

  275. on 17 Oct 2008 at 4:38 am275Susan Elliott

I find sewing is a way to journal my life. No matter what I’m making, the thoughts that are top-of-mind are translated into my work. Thank God for needles and thread!

  276. on 17 Oct 2008 at 4:54 am276Laurie Matthews

I love to try and create something useful and not have to rely on the boring stuff you find in the stores.

  277. on 17 Oct 2008 at 5:00 am277april

This sounds like a wonderful book. I love to sew because it allows me express myself creatively while making something that can be used as well as admired.

  278. on 17 Oct 2008 at 5:11 am278Regina

I have sewn from my childhood onwards, being at home with a mom who was a seamstress. Always curious what fabrics she had bought on the Thursday market, and would it be for new clothes for us, the three daughters? Untill today I’m happy when I sew, happy because I love fabrics, love my sewingmachine and the contentment it gives me to sew my own clothes, quilts etc., that I’m skilled to make them.
Bye Kathy, have a wonderful day, and thanks for your inspiration,

  279. on 17 Oct 2008 at 5:11 am279Melissa

I love the fact I can make something I can use, and I love the process of choosing fabrics.

  280. on 17 Oct 2008 at 5:19 am280Jennifer

I’m still learning to sew myself, but I love the sense of accomplishment when I’ve completed something, and then when I get to use or wear something that I’ve created myself!

  281. on 17 Oct 2008 at 5:22 am281Yvonne

I really enjoy sewing and it is so rewarding when my kids wear what I sew and even better when they love it.

  282. on 17 Oct 2008 at 5:29 am282Stacey

I just love the joy of creating something!

  283. on 17 Oct 2008 at 5:35 am283Kristi C

I love to sew because I want to bring back the idea of “homemade” in my family’s life. The speedy tone of life we live in has lost so much of domesticity. When I think about my grandmother, I remember her sewing up a storm and making everything her children wore. I love that. I am learning to sew now so that I can do that for (and with!) my kids one day. And, October 20th is my one year anniversary with my husband who bought me the sewing machine, so that’s a reason in itself to win ;)
Thank you for your creativity and ideas!

  284. on 17 Oct 2008 at 5:49 am284Stephanie

What a gorgeous book! She is amazingly talented. I love to sew because I get a great sense of satisfaction seeing something created by my own hands. I believe handmade is best!

  285. on 17 Oct 2008 at 6:32 am285beki

Ooo, I can’t wait to get my hands on this!

  286. on 17 Oct 2008 at 6:41 am286Robyn

I love to sew because it makes my home feel like it’s really *mine* - like I put my thoughts and love into it, instead of buying everything premade. The pillows, the table runner, the quiltlets, the coasters, my hands and heart went into everything. It makes my home feel like love.

  287. on 17 Oct 2008 at 6:55 am287Renee

I love to sew as the end result is something “real” which then gets worn or loved by my family and friends. It takes me away from my computer and lets me touch the fabric. I can do it with my children in the room whereas working is more difficult to do with them around. I feel like each time I make something for someone (myself included) that I am giving them a little hug to take with them when I cannot be there to give them one. It makes me smile and warms my heart in so many ways.

  288. on 17 Oct 2008 at 6:57 am288domi

For me sewing is like eating ice cream, it’s all about instant gratification.

  289. on 17 Oct 2008 at 7:00 am289domi

    It’s all about instant gratification.

  290. on 17 Oct 2008 at 7:02 am290Renee

It is fun and creative. I tried to sew for hire, and hated the drudgery. I enjoy it as an artist who paints when inspired. I love seeing the smile when a gift is received or my daughter LOVES her new creation.

  291. on 17 Oct 2008 at 7:03 am291Nikki

Wow, there are soooo many reasons I love to sew! But I guess #1 would be because it is so much fun to be resourceful and be creative with what I have. I have said before, I don’t want to win the lottery because that would sort of take away the need for creativity, in my opinion!

  292. on 17 Oct 2008 at 7:05 am292MegVS

Ack! There are already so many comments. I have been dying to get this one. I saw it in B&N, and it was just as good as I hoped it would be!

  293. on 17 Oct 2008 at 7:06 am293MegVS

Woops. The reason I love it sew is making beautiful things! It is so satisfying!

  294. on 17 Oct 2008 at 7:11 am294driftwood

I love to sew things for my little ones, they think I’m super mom!

  295. on 17 Oct 2008 at 7:43 am295andrea

    Please please pick me!
I love to sew because it satisfies my need to create and its’ results are gratifying-and useful!

I just love how each new project you finish is like graduating from a grade. You learn something that you can take with you to the next grade….just like in school.

  297. on 17 Oct 2008 at 8:07 am297Jennifer

I love to sew because…I love picking out fabrics, I love creating useful things, and I love seeing people’s faces when I give them something I made :)

  298. on 17 Oct 2008 at 8:18 am298jacquie

    sewing feeds my creative soul.

  299. on 17 Oct 2008 at 8:25 am299MamaChanga

I’m a newbie to sewing but am already in love with it. I think one of the main reasons I’m so in love with sewing is that my grandmother (who recently passed away) was a seamstress, so it brings back fond memories of her. (BTW, she even sewed my wedding dress!).

  300. on 17 Oct 2008 at 8:31 am300elizabeth

I love to sew because I can make things that are truly my own.

  301. on 17 Oct 2008 at 8:36 am301Lindsey R.

My favorite reason for sewing is that it allows me to release my creativity and challenges me to continue learning something new and growing as a seamstress.

  302. on 17 Oct 2008 at 8:41 am302Tara

I love creating one-of-a-kind things and knowing that (hopefully) my children will cherish things I’ve made for years to come, just because “Mama made it for me.”

    Thanks for the contest!

  303. on 17 Oct 2008 at 8:45 am303moodymama

I love picking out my own fabric and creating one-of-a-kind projects or garments. My mom sewed a lot of our clothes as I was growing up and I didn’t appreciate them. Now I wish I had them for my own children and am making clothes for them, too. She never formally taught me how to sew, but I spent so much time with her that I learned a lot from observing. She is a a great resource now and is wonderful at talking me through difficult spots on the phone.

  304. on 17 Oct 2008 at 8:52 am304Stephanie

I love to sew because it calms me. My son got his second detention in a month yesterday. How did I deal? I started a quilt! Also, I love to show off (that’s my secret reason though–haha).

  305. on 17 Oct 2008 at 8:52 am305Sarah

I love to sew because it’s so fun to take some fabric and a pattern and come up with something unique and beautiful.

  306. on 17 Oct 2008 at 8:55 am306Charlene

I love to sew for many reasons and sewing is such a learning process for me which keeps me constantly inspired. I like being able to make exactly what I want. I like making things for my children and the absolute joy I see in their eyes. And finally, I like sewing things for others making a gift extra special because it comes from the heart.

  307. on 17 Oct 2008 at 9:48 am307Deborah

Sewing makes me happy and fullfilled. It brings me back to spending time with my grandma sewing Barbie clothes and to having my own children at my feet while I sewed for them and others. I love to create and it lets me be in my own world doing what I love, even if it is only for a few hours a day. It gets my juices flowing!

  308. on 17 Oct 2008 at 10:29 am308Michelle

I sew because it keeps me sane!! I was in a car accident 3 years ago and was left with crushing headaches that are a constant presence. How lucky am I that I can still sew, actually that is one of the few things I can concentrate on when I am in the throws of hurting. I feel accomplishment and proud that I can still give from the heart to people I care about. It calms me, it soothes me, it inspires me, and my best friends sew too.

  309. on 17 Oct 2008 at 10:42 am309Kim

One? It’s seeing a beautiful fabric and giving it even more personality :)K

One? It’s seeing a beautiful fabric and giving it even more personality :)K

  311. on 17 Oct 2008 at 10:45 am311Tammy

One reason I love to sew….
is because when I sit down to work on a project, I completely relax. In the midst of all the chaos of family, home, and the outside world, it’s like everything shuts down and I can focus on the rhythm - whether it’s on my machine or a bit of hand embroidery, even hemming or sewing on a button - I can get into the “zone” and lose track of time.

  312. on 17 Oct 2008 at 10:52 am312Peggie

I love to sew because when I am immersed in fabric, color and creativity I am so relaxed and my mind gets to wander all over life and the world.

  313. on 17 Oct 2008 at 10:52 am313Amy

I love to sew. I love the feeling of doing something for myself. Sure it would probably be easier and most times less expensive to buy something than to make it yourself, but it kind of gives me a self satisfied fight the power kind of feeling. I also love to touch and play with fabric.

  314. on 17 Oct 2008 at 10:56 am314Kristi

I love to sew because someday when I’m old and gray, it will bring warmth to my heart if my children still value the things I made them when they were young.

  315. on 17 Oct 2008 at 11:22 am315Rachel

I love to sew, because I like to create things with my hands. I also like to combine colors.

  316. on 17 Oct 2008 at 11:59 am316Alison

Sewing is a huge stress relief for me with three boys under 4 running me around the house!

  317. on 17 Oct 2008 at 12:39 pm317Krissy

Kathy … lol I have NO idea how you manage to keep up with SO many comments, but I LOVE it that when I ask questions, you personally respond to me! lol You are AWESOME! (And that book looks AWESOME!!!)
For me … sewing is visually rewarding. I have some certifications for various things, but ultimately still feel entirely too unsuccessful in my mother-in-law’s eyes. Sewing gives me the warm fuzzies and for once, I actually FEEL and can SEE that I AM good at something. And the awesome thing about it all is that even though I’m still REALLY new to it all, I can only get better as the years go by. :)

  318. on 17 Oct 2008 at 12:43 pm318Sarah

    Thanks for the giveaway!

I love to sew because I still find it amazing how I begin with a pile of ordinary fabric and turn it into something fun and functional. Also, there is no limit to what I can create!

  319. on 17 Oct 2008 at 12:44 pm319JeanneLee

I love to sew when I get time, but I LOVE to read, as well, and this book looks awesome! Maybe it will even inspire me to SEW more then READ!

    Thanks!
    JeanneLee

  320. on 17 Oct 2008 at 12:46 pm320JeanneLee

I love to sew and READ…and I hope if I win that this book will inspire me to Sew MORE then I read!
    Thanks!
    JeanneLee

  321. on 17 Oct 2008 at 12:53 pm321heidi

because it expresses my creativity and puts a bit of me into the things I make.

  322. on 17 Oct 2008 at 1:03 pm322Brittany

Wow! What a great looking book, I love the spiral binding too! I love to sew because I love the feeling of accomplishment and the pre-sewing creative juices.

  323. on 17 Oct 2008 at 1:17 pm323karen

My love of sewing started after reading the book ‘little women’ as a child, since then I have adored sewing and the comfort and sense of belonging it brings.

  324. on 17 Oct 2008 at 1:40 pm324nyjlm

I enjoy sewing for the same reason I love baking bread- it just seems miraculous to make something from almost nothing! I’m also pretty much self-taught at both things, which gives me great satisfaction.

  325. on 17 Oct 2008 at 2:04 pm325Christina R

I love sewing because I MUST create. I don’t cook or draw or paint… hence my love for my sewing machine.

I love color and all things cute! I’m especially fond of making bags and baby dolls.

  326. on 17 Oct 2008 at 2:07 pm326Tracy

My mom spent the first 28 years of my life trying to get me to craft. She crafted in every which way possible, from painting to sewing to stain glass to wood work to well, everything. I, being a rebellious little girl, refused to join her. When I was 29, I discovered knitting which promptly took over my life. Two years ago, my mom passed away from a short bout with cancer and sewing became my outlet. Every time I sew, I wish I could give her a call and talk to her about it but I know she knows… :)

  327. on 17 Oct 2008 at 2:28 pm327Momma Pajama

I love to sew because it is a tie to my Gramma who taught me.

  328. on 17 Oct 2008 at 2:50 pm328Michele

I love to sew because I love to own unique things that no one else has!

  329. on 17 Oct 2008 at 5:43 pm329Ramona

I love to sew because it makes me feel creative and it is relaxing. Mostly I love to sew because I can give as gifts something personal, and full of love.

  330. on 17 Oct 2008 at 6:08 pm330Jennifer J. S.

Oh My! So many comments already! I would LOVE a copy of this book!

I love to sew especially for my 5 children…..it makes me sew happy to make them something they want to wear (skirts/jumpers/COSTUMES) or use right away (your awesome colored pencil roll, quilts, purses) & I always love to fulfill their ‘custom orders & requests’. “Mama can you make me ……(insert item here)!!!”

  331. on 17 Oct 2008 at 6:53 pm331sally

What a great book. I love to sew because it is so much fun to make things for other people. I love to see their faces when they open the gift or just sending it off. I just get so excited.

  332. on 17 Oct 2008 at 7:13 pm332SandyinOz

I love to create things that have a use, a purpose or just give pleasure to both the creator and the recipient. Sewing covers all this and more.

  333. on 17 Oct 2008 at 7:20 pm333robyn

would love to get my hands on this book. free, no less. here’s hoping. :)

  334. on 17 Oct 2008 at 8:06 pm334Jocelyn

Hmmm…I love to sew because it’s my “ME” time; after the kids have gone to bed and I get to sew until I hear the birds sing (the sign of a truly productive night for me :) A time when even though it’s my guilty pleasure, the rewards are for both me and my family — when my daughter puts on that new outfit or brings her new book bag to school and proudly says with a big smile on her face “my mom made this for me” or my boys show off their quilts at a sleepover and say “cool blanket huh? my mom made it” - you know it’s all worth it :)

  335. on 17 Oct 2008 at 9:36 pm335SANDRA CLARKE

I love to sew because it gives me an outlet for my creativity. I learned to sew early in 4-H Club and it is a love that has lasted many years. I saw your tins in the quilting arts magazine, cute!!

  336. on 17 Oct 2008 at 10:00 pm336Debbie W

I sew to create, which in turn saves my sanity. Housework is like stringing beads without a knot at the end of the string. Sewing I can finish and actually feel I have accomplished something.

  337. on 18 Oct 2008 at 12:15 am337Lisa

I am not an advanced sewer, but I LOVE to sew for my girls (6 & 8). They love everything I make for them and for their dolls so it is a lot of fun to create things for them. Especially twirly, circle skirts!

  338. on 18 Oct 2008 at 5:33 am338Carmen

I love to sew because it is so satisfying to create something that no one else has.

  339. on 18 Oct 2008 at 6:16 am339elizabeth

i love to sew for so many reasons (it sounds like i have a lot in common with all you other readers) - but i think the biggest reason is the connection it gives me with my gramma (we were very close). she taught and encouraged my love for crafting. she used to make our halloween costumes and i wanted to be able to do that for my children (i have yet to do that but i have sewn regular clothing). she never got to meet my kids, but i know she would have loved them and been so happy and proud of my following in her footsteps.

  340. on 18 Oct 2008 at 8:10 am340Carol

I love to sew because I get so much satisfaction seeing the finished product!

  341. on 18 Oct 2008 at 8:17 am341Melanie

What I truly enjoy about sewing is how everything comes together like a puzzle, it is so rewarding and enjoyable!

  342. on 18 Oct 2008 at 8:22 am342rebekah

I love to sew because I love process of creating something from nothing. I can rework old clothing destined for the landfill or the rag pile and make it into something fun and functional. What’s old is new again!

  343. on 18 Oct 2008 at 8:24 am343Tanya

I am loving learning how to sew… it really feels rewarding to actually take a beautiful piece of material and create something to showcase the fabric. I truly believe that it is important to keep learning new things and show my children through example that if you put your mind to it you can do anything.

  344. on 18 Oct 2008 at 8:53 am344jenn

I love to sew, knit, quilt or whatever my currrent mood has me in because it is my zen. I work full time and I am the mom to 2 kids, 3 doggies, 2 kitties and 1 dear husband. Creating just allows me to find a few moments of peace, it keeps me in balance and also lets the little artist in me flourish!

I love to sew because…it’s what I do best.
It’s wayyy more fun than cleaning house too..ha.

  346. on 18 Oct 2008 at 11:30 am346Cheryl

Sewing is very satisfying in that you are creating something while escaping into a relaxed world of your own. To me it’s a form of therapy. You focus on your creation and get to lock out the unwanted thoughts swirling about.

  347. on 18 Oct 2008 at 12:00 pm347Shanna

I love seeing something and thinking “I can make that” and then putting your own twist on it. I love seeing the look on my kids faces when I make something special for them and knowing they love it.

  348. on 18 Oct 2008 at 12:06 pm348julie

I love to sew because it makes my 5 year old daughter happy.
It also very relaxing to me and gives me a sense of accomplishment when I make a new item.

  349. on 18 Oct 2008 at 4:29 pm349Sheridan

One reason I love to sew? I get to use all my beautiful fabric!

  350. on 18 Oct 2008 at 5:58 pm350Angela

I love to sew because it gives me the satisfaction to be able to make something and I love fabric!

  351. on 18 Oct 2008 at 5:59 pm351Angie

I love giving gifts, and it makes me so happy to pick out just the right fabrics and pattern for someone!

  352. on 18 Oct 2008 at 8:40 pm352jenzycole

I love to sew because I LOVE FABRIC, I love the feel of fabric, and once it is in a quilt all quilted up, I just love running my hand over it…therefore I buy and buy and buy fabric and then I cut it up and sew it back together

  353. on 18 Oct 2008 at 8:49 pm353Mary Anne

I love being able to get my creative juices flowing into something that will (hopefully) be a prized possession long after I am allowed to spend in this great world that we live in!!

  354. on 18 Oct 2008 at 10:05 pm354Regina

I enjoy sewing because it is MUCH quicker than my other project-knitting.

I love to sew because it is something I do to unwind and escape from all lifes “have to’s…” something just for me, which I dont get a lot of…Melinda

  356. on 19 Oct 2008 at 2:01 am356claudine

I love sewing because I love playing with fabrics and matching them up. I love how placing a piece of fabric next to different fabrics can create a whole lot of new possibilities!

  357. on 19 Oct 2008 at 4:32 am357BusyDayCake

I’m returning to my sewing roots this year and its been a pleasure to read your blog. Thanks for the book giveaway opp!

  358. on 19 Oct 2008 at 6:30 am358LisaAlso

I started sewing as a young girl as a way to afford current fashion or to make a creation I saw only in my head. Now i sew for pleasure, to make clothes that actually fit, or just as a creative outlet! i have tried teaching both of my girls to sew, but they have no interest! One of the greatest failures of my life! LOL

  359. on 19 Oct 2008 at 8:22 am359linda k

I love sewing because I LOVE fabric!!!

  360. on 19 Oct 2008 at 10:33 am360Priscilla

I love to sew because I get such satisfaction from using the things I made myself!

  361. on 19 Oct 2008 at 11:30 am361Lois

Hi - I have been sewing for as long as I can remember. There have been periods of time when knitting, crafting or painting took center stage - but sewing has always been my real love. The enormous variety of textiles, the sounds of the machine and the ability to use my creations keep me going !

  362. on 19 Oct 2008 at 4:53 pm362Kristin

I love sewing for the “Zen” state I sometimes get into. I love the colors, the feel of the fabric, the lovely things I can make. I love the fact that I don’t have to rely on other people or companies to make everything for my home and family. I love to create things to delight or provide comfort to others.

  363. on 19 Oct 2008 at 7:28 pm363Nikola

It has been so neatly said in all the previous comments:) But I’ll add that I like to sew because I can and I’m greatful to those who taught me through the years.

  364. on 19 Oct 2008 at 9:20 pm364Christine

I love to sew and being a perfectionist, get a real bang out of it when all my seams/intersecting points match! Since I have a room FULL of fabric, the visual joy of putting together different fabrics of color and texture make me swoon.

  365. on 19 Oct 2008 at 11:44 pm365kerry

I love to sew…..because it keeps me away from house work (which I don’t love to do)

I hope I make it into the drawing — this book looks stunning, and I love Anna Maria’s blog!

  367. on 20 Oct 2008 at 6:24 am367Christine

Hi - I hope I am not too late for the drawing. It is so exciting to see pictures from the inside of the book.

  368. on 20 Oct 2008 at 8:23 am368dawn

I love to sew because I am 3 dimensional minded and when I see finished projects, I feel satisfied!

  369. on 20 Oct 2008 at 8:36 am369Diane

I feel “special” when I sew, like I’m unique and what I’m doing is out of the ordinary. We could all be very down on ourselves, but there needs to be aspects of our lives that are unique and that set us apart, sewing is this for me. Others have other means of identification, each individual needs something. I don’t mean this in an arrogant sort of way… Thank You. Oooo, …would love AnnaMaria’s book!

  370. on 20 Oct 2008 at 9:18 am370shara

when my daughter was born i learned how to sew. i havent looked back once, what a creative and fun outlet. now that se is 9, sewing is something we can do together!

  371. on 20 Oct 2008 at 9:25 am371Roseanne

I love sewing because it feels like making something from “nothing”. Starting with a flat, lifeless piece of fabric, and turning it into something useful, pretty, new, and different from anyone else’s. It thrills me!

  372. on 20 Oct 2008 at 8:20 pm372Paige

I love to sew because it makes me take time to relax. It also gives me a chance to hang with my grandma, the quilting and sewing expert.
