Ladder Day Saints by my friend Barbara Houshmand, quilted by another good friend Marybeth O’Halloran. It made my day to see that big Honorable Mention ribbon on the quilt when I walked into the show.
The artist statement from the brochure: Ladder Day Saints. This reflects my Utah childhood and my experience of being raised in a world of conflicting opinions and beliefs. As a result, the quilt represents the conflict between the utilitarian function of a quilt–to keep one warm–and its function within art, as an expression to provoke thought about one’s beliefs. 68″ x 101″
The photography policy is very explicit in the show’s program, no posting of quilts from the show without permission by the artist so this will be it. Sorry guys.
The show venue changed to the convention center from the Seattle center and it was such a fabulous move for the artists and the show vendors. Wide aisles made for leisurely viewing and much improved lighting. I thoroughly enjoyed the diversity of entrants. There was a special group of small quilts this year which reminded me that not every quilt has to fit a bed! I think it’s high time I get back into the sewing room.

Sarah and I met up to see the show and enjoy a fun lunch at the always packed Cheesecake Factory. That bag in my hand is 6 yards of vintage fabric that I didn’t need.

I spotted this lovely gal from across the room wearing her Mail Sack bag. I had to ask for a photo. Hopefully I didn’t come across as too big of a whack job, I was just so excited!

We had such a great time! The cute girl with the mail sack was named Chelsea. Hi Chelsea!
Oh, and to all the readers out there – we’re way cuter in person. The lighting in the convention center was awful!
I was thinking that green background didn’t help matters much!
Oh, that’s just too cool (to see your pattern come to life…) and that funky bag? Well, just goes to show that a good designs transcend age groups and styles. Who knew skull and bones fabric could look so good? I love it! (although I am no biker chick myself, LOL!)
I’m sure she didn’t think you were a whack job! I’ve had a couple of people notice someone else with one of my bags and make sure to tell me that they went up and told that person they knew who made it! So, if that sentence makes any sense…you aren’t the only one who approaches strangers because of the bag they’re wearing!

You needed that vintage fabric because if you hadn’t purchased it, you would have regretted that for a while. I had no idea you were from Utah! The Ladder Day Saint quilt cracked me up! Currently I’m sitting in my living room in West Valley City.
I don’t blame you for being excited. I’ve been thinking for some time about selling the things I make and this week had two completely unexpected and completely unsolicted offers to buy things – one for 20 of a particular item! I am so excited, I have been walking on cloud 9 all week!
ah, beautiful pics!

I LOVE the green quilts you pictured… and I can totally understand that you asked the girl with the mailsack for a picture… I’d most likely do the same and my hubby would think I’m crazy. but I think that’s perfectly normal (and her bag is COOL! her fabric choice could be mine
Just ordered and received my mail sack pattern. FAST shipping. Love the postcard inside with quilt sizes. Can’t wait to decide on my fabric and get started.
I’d worry a lot more if you WEREN’T excited! It has been great to watch your business develop over the last year that I’ve been reading the blog!
Love the Ladder Day Saints quilt! Thanks for sharing that with us!! I just finished my mail sack, finished one for my daughter yesterday. What a superb pattern!!!
What fun! It looks like such a great time was had by all! So curious about the mail sack pattern! Hmm – have to check that out!
Hey! I know those pretty women! Wish I had been there too.
She (Chelsea) kinda looks like she’s thinking, “Oh I hope Kathy doesn’t think I’m too much of a whack job, but Oooo, oooh, oooh, I’m standing next to the lady that designed this totally cool bag!!”
I love the Ladder Day Saints quilt! Thanks for sharing it for those of us who keep being in places too remote to see the quilts in person.
Hi all – this is Chelsea from the picture! Kristin L is correct – I was thrilled to meet the Kathy at the show – she’s a celebrity! After we meet and talked I wished I had of thought to go purchase another copy of the pattern that Kathy could have signed for me. I love the mail sack pattern – it was the first pattern I ever attempted with a zipper and the directions were the best. Keep up the good work Kathy!
