I created Joy Ride for the Quilting Arts “Postcards from “ Challenge. I recently received my submission back from the magazine. What a delight to open the package. We all enjoyed looking at the images and reminiscing about the road trip. I can’t believe it’s been a year since we took that trip, last July 4th!

The project didn’t get a feature in the magazine but I’m so glad I participated (first time I’ve done one of these). It’s definitely about the process rather than the result for me. I think I work best if given a theme and a deadline! The result is something so special to me and I wouldn’t have created it without the structure of the challenge.

The guidelines specified binding the postcards together. I plan to take these back apart and display them all at the same time.

I experimented with lots of different techniques. I scanned and printed the national park maps onto silk organza. There’s a small piece of map on each postcard. In the case of Mount Rushmore I printed the carvings onto cotton and worked them in.

My favorite part are those pennies we paid 25 cents to flatten in the machines at the different parks. LOVED those things as a kid.

I uploaded the inspiration photos I could locate. Here’s a link to one and two WIP posts from last year.

Wishing you lots of fun on your own holiday Joy Rides. Happy 4th!

What a beautiful thing to have. You did an amazing job on the project.
Kathy, that is just so charming. What a beautiful way to remember your trip.
I love it! It’s such a unique way to remember your travels. I especially like the two landscape postcards. I may have to try this out sometime soon!
absolutely gorgeous!
W.O.W.! All those techniques. Some precious cards Kathy!
OH WOW! I love it!
I also LOVE it. The beads and beads and tulle really get to me, when the maps and embroidery had softened me up already, so it’s just wonderful all together. So cool!!
Kathy – I am waiting on word/return of my first submission to quilting arts. I have also found that I like having a challenge/deadline.
These are stunning – I am glad to know you will be displaying them all.

Oh, absolutely priceless! What a treasure. My favorite things are always those pressed pennies, too… only how come ours are 50 cents plus the penny?!

Great project and a nice momento of a trip! Love all the different techniques you have used.
Kathy, you just never cease to amaze me! These are stunning and sooo creative! It’ll be interesting to see what the magazine DID choose – yours will be very hard to top.

Gosh, I would have chosen you! These are fabulous and what a wonderful way to remember and celebrate a family trip. Once again I am in awe of the variety and reach of your creative spirit.
What a neat idea …… wonderful job. Sorry you didn’t win.
Thanks everybody! The featured projects were actually featured a few issues back. They keep submissions for close to 8 months from the time of original mailing. Such a treat to have them home again.
Entering the QA challenge was one of the monthly projects my Out of the Box creativity group decided to tackle. Jenn Rhoads, the owner of Esther’s is part of the group. Her entry did get featured!!! A very exciting end for all of us doing the challenge.

What an amazing family trip! You certainly get a good feel for it from those postcards. So, incredible. Displaying them is a fab idea. That way every time you pass them, you’ll be reminded. Awesome.
Oh my ggggggooooooossssssssshhhhhhhh ~ these are so totally DELIGHTFUL! Would you consider doing a tutorial on how to do these? I would be very grateful if you would!

We just got back a few weeks ago from our roadtrip to South Dakota and Wyoming….what a great project idea!
These are fantastic!!!!!
What a wonderful souvenir! So original; it has a lot more meaning than a regular postcard or a photograph.
I’ve just nominated you for an Arte y Pico award: http://www.planetjune.com/blog/award-season/
That’s beautifully done. I’m surprised that it didn’t get featured in the magazine. I love it.
I’m sure I’m repeating what everyone else has said, but these are stunning! What an incredible gift of quilting you have.
oh my gosh, kathy. these are fantastic!! they’re very expressive, with such great texture. i especially love the mount rushmore postcard.
I’d like to talk about you on my blog, shall I?
just contact me if you want me to say something in particular…
I love that postcards!!!
really!
Amber: I have to respond to Amber’s comment about being good to do this. I have always felt completely unqualified to do anything even remotely related to ‘art’ and ‘quilting’. I just do it anyway. I’m always amazed at how I can start one of these projects with a simple idea and then they take on a life of their own. Just start cutting and gluing and stitching and you’re sure to surprise yourself!
Your work is awe-inspiring. Fun, beautiful, loaded with mounds of creativity…oooohhhh and the colors and patterns. I just love it.
This is truly fantastic! I will be back to look at it again and again….and having just finished a trip to Yellowstone, I am even more inspired!
Smiles,
Dianne
We’re headed out on a road trip on Friday…I am TOTALLY taking supplies to do my own postcard book! Fun, fun idea!!
My oh My! Lovin’ this
