Mail Sack using Anna Maria Horner’s Drawing Room, home decor weight cotton sateen.
If you’ve cruised over to the shop you’ve most likely taken a peek at the Stack Packs, coordinating fabrics sold in fat quarter and one yard sets. The one yard sets give you a discount of 5% off the regular yardage price.
A new idea popped in my head regarding Stack Packs and these gorgeous home decor weight cottons. A fat quarter of 55/56″ fabric measures 18″ x 28″. Why not cut them as “fat 3/8 yard” so the piece measures 28″ x 28″? Enough fabric to create a simple 26″ pillow and contain a complete printing of the 24″ repeat.
This is where you come in. I need a name. Fat 3/8 Yard doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue like saying Fat Quarter. Play along by leaving a comment with what you would call this. Think outside the box. Be clever. Be funny. Be brilliant! The winning idea gets their choice of a Joel Dewberry Fat 3/8 Yard Stack Pack or you can wait and choose the upcoming Denyse Schmidt line of home decor weight cottons (gosh they’re beautiful, yummy colors). I’ll draw a second winner from everyone who participates.
(Anna Maria’s birds flew out of here rather quickly. I’m trying to get some more. There is a small amount remaining in the stack packs.)
The contest is open for a full week. I’ll announce the winners next Friday, June 20. Happy Wordsmithing!

How about “Square Decs/Square Decks”? Spelling is optional.
Love the bag!
My suggestion: 28′s
I also like all the pillow packs/ pillow stacks that have been suggested earlier.
What about Fat Thirty Eights? It plays on the 3 and the 8 in 3/8, and 3 divided by 8, rounded, is .38. So that’s my suggestion!
How nifty! Here’s a few of my ideas:
*Bloated 8th
*Super Duper Fat Quarter (SDFQ)
*Triple Fat Quarter
Good luck choosing between all of these awesome ideas!
Some of the things I thought of are already listed, but here is another that’s not….
“Picture Window Square” – because a picture window is usually placed to frame a particular attractive view, and you want a size that frames a whole repeat of an attractive pattern.
another is a “28 repeat”
So many great ideas already shared, what about
Pink by Post Plumpers
Plumper Packs
Plumper Stack Packs
Quarter grande (grahnday)
Pink Quarter Grande
Grand Charms/Grand Charm Packs or substitute Grande
deco quarter (deco fabric is more often the wider width)
deco delight
deco charm
“Couch Potato Quarters”? Reflects the home-dec-ness of these cuts.
“Pink & Plump Packs”
How about:
- A Fatty
- A Perfect Square
- Square Pegs (an homage to that awesome 80′s show)
- A Mega Quarter
- Design Squares
- domSquares (dom being a prefix for things pertaining to the home, i.e. domain, domicile … “dom” also means home in some Eastern European languages)
- Casa Quarters, Casa Cubes or Casa Cuties
after this many comments I choose instead to VOTE…
I am partial to the second comment where she (Kelly) suggests Great 28…
How about a Chunky Hunk?
You’ve got some great suggestions! How about a fattie pattie?
28 square
Euro Square, since is it’s large enough for a Euro pillow.
It took me a while to figure out what a fat quarter was!
I’m not good in naming things… Maybe because I’m too straighlaced or rational and I tend to think in straigh lines… But, whatever, let’s give it a shot: “three eights” (if it makes sense, english is my second language, so it might not have the same meaning it does for me in portuguese – tres oitavos – and I don’t even know how you would pronouce that in english).
Ok, I love Sara’s fattie pattie.
My idea is “February Squares” (except during leap years, of course)
How’s about “corpulent quarters”
“chunky cuts”
“portly pillows”
A Fat Square
A Square Fat
Well, we already have fat quarters, jelly rolls and layer cakes, what about calling them “sweet slices” or “sweet sheets” and naming the bundles “sheet cakes”?
Going with Lynn’s idea, you could call them “Cupid’s Quarters” (the whole Valentine’s day in February, 28 days in the month…. you see where I’m going).
Or what about “pattern pinchers”? (You can pinch pennies by not getting full yard cuts but you still get to see a full repeat of the design/pattern on the fabric…)
Since you live on Bainbridge Island, which is 27.78 square miles, and these squares would be 28 inches, how about a Bainbridge Square? (I know 28″ x 28″ doesn’t give you 28 square inches, but you get where I’m going, right?)
So many great ideas already, even though these may have been mentioned above I’ll second
Fat Square
Pink Square — really think it should be PINK SQUARE after all
it is unique to your blog. Go with it; name it
in Pink.
Keep up the inspiration, Kathy.
How about “sixth square” or “sixth quarter”? (But I must say, for a german almost not to pronounce…) Good luck for your decision!!
Regards, Katharina
how about pillow portions
or
pillow pieces
chubby pack
chubbs delight
delicioso
PINK CUBE
Pink Link (once sewn all the pieces would be linked…. )
PECETA LINDA (pretty quarter in spanish)
My guess is “Craft Quarter”. It’s for more than just quilting and it sounds like “fat quarter”.
I second either Euro Square because it’s descriptive, anyone will know how big it is or else the Fat Third* also because a person can quickly imagine the size. Fat 3/8 was really hard to wrap my mind around.
I like Lesley’s “quilter’s quarter” and Jen’s “rare squares.” I promise I had a few ideas, but after looking through all the comments, i see people have already thought of them! Great idea!!
“square fat”
Great fun! I am taking advantage of aSprinkling’s comment that this value is just shy of a half-yard–the logical,if not glam, suggestion is
Thin Half
Nice parallel to fat quarters, and explains what it is. (I’m still new at sewing and I really appreciate obvious naming. Once someone told what a fat quarter was, I got the idea right away….)
oops. also
Thin Halves
“Super FQ”
“Super Quarter”
“Fat Quarter Plus”
“FQ Plus”
“ExtraFat Quarter”
Hope those aren’t repeats… Great suggestions, all!
skinny halves, since it’s just shy of a half yard.
How about a Chubby Third or Stocky Third?
How about:
Fat Quarter & Change {Ya know, money talk. Since it’s a little bit more than a quarter.}
28 Squared {Since it’s 28″ x 28″ }
French Quarter {I don’t know. Just because when I thought of the word “quarter” I thought of French Quarter & it’s sounds like a chic name for some chic fabric!}
Sorry if I repeated some of the ideas already mentioned. I didn’t have time to read all 134 comments before posting ;>)
How about thick thirds? Simple and to the point.
I’m thinking ” The Chalk Box”. Short, to the point, not too cute, and still suggests creativity, as well as your signature. Love the bag!
a “fabric fattie”.
I’m not the most creative branch on the bush but here goes….
Big Quarter? Or simply a “28.”
How about a Deco Deck???
Just wanted to say that my first Mail Sack turned out great! Super pattern.
What about following the latte sizing lingo – Grande Fat?
I’m restraining myself from reading the rest of the comments until later. I’m sure there are some awesome suggestions out there! I can’t wait to see what all those clever people come up with.
If you’re giving a different name to the 3/8 yard stack packs, you’d have to call them Mack Packs.
For the individiual cuts, Mack Third or Mack Square. However, I do like Fat Third or Square Third the best. Simple and descriptive and easier for newcomers to the site to understand.
How ’bout “Double Footer” or “Two Footer”? (re: 24″x24″)
This is a very good idea!
The naming contest is an even better idea!:)
There are so many good suggestions…i’ll throw a few more into to mix..(though i have to be honest and say that the “chalk box” suggestion was my favorite)…by the way…how many different fabrics will you be putting in the stack?
ok….here’s mine….
Deco Squares, Creatables (since they are cut into a good size to create many different things), chic stacks, candy quarters..
Nice nice bag, I “told” AnnaMaria about it! I love how you learned, by checking out books from the Libraray that was me totally also, I’ve had the Denise Schmidt Quilts book on hold at the library for forever, I’m number one in line for it now! I enjoy your blog. Thanks!
Juicy Quarter!
stout square!
My idea:
The Big Three-Eight
but there are so many good ones here!
I didn’t have time to read the responses, so I hope I’m not duplicating.
Since grandma’s always give you more ( more dessert, more time to play, more rocking in the rocking chair, etc), how about “granny squares”? MORE than a regular fat quarter, it’s like having a treat from Grandma.
)
Fun contest.
)
I love how that bag looks with Anna Maria’s bold prints!
Here are a few my tired brain came up with at such a late hour:
Short halves
Squat halves
Double squares
Fantastic Fractions
Decorators squared (but mabye “decor8tors^2″…with a superscript 2)
