Leil’s costume for the 4th grade play. Completed the day I got back from quilt market and one day before dress rehearsal. Thank goodness I’ve saved every pattern I’ve ever bought or made, even the costumes. Not only will my kids make a mint on eBay in 50 years, I sometimes pull one out and actually use it.
The skirt was Simplicity 9417, multi-sizes Yay!, purchased for a 3 year old, made for a 10 year old. The top was McCall’s 3334 which is really funny because it’s a robe pattern for a witch. I shortened the sleeves and the waist and passed on the Frankenstein edge finish. Both fabrics are West Hill by Heather Ross.
I’m most proud of the apron. A pillowcase. I cut it open and used the extra fabric from one end to make the waistband. I didn’t even finish the edges if you look close on the sides.
I realize I’m biased, but I truly believe she was the best looking peasant in the play. Best of all: Leil wants to wear it all the time!

it is really beautiful – i’d want to wear it all the time, too!
What a lovely outfit! Puts to shame the lady innkeeper costume I made earlier this year for my 2nd grader’s Ben Franklin play at school. I used leftover/stash fabric and no pattern. It was patriotic though. I can’t let dear daughter see this lovely costume!
I LOVE that you used a pillowcase for the apron! Mainly because that idea is now stashed in my brain, where it will hopefully surface in the future, should I ever need a child size apron.
That is a fantastic outfit, I’d wear it all the time as well! And I really love the pillowcase apron, it’s giving me all sorts of new ideas.
HOW cute!
Love the costume – what a great idea for the apron – who would have thought it started out as a pillowcase! I wish my Mum and Grandmother had of kept all their vintage patterns for me.
This is why I need to learn to sew–for all the plays my kids will be in the future! Love the costume and it’s great that it’s doing double duty too. I totally would wear it all the time too.
Kim: that’s why I love that idea too. I was in the laundry room thinking about the costume when I looked down on the floor and saw the pillowcase. Getting creative inspiration from dirty laundry is a first for me!
The heck with a costume, I to want to wear this all the time too. xoxoxo Clarice
what lucky girls!! It’s so much fun to be able to do those special things. But they sure catch on quick…everytime I’m sewing, my 2 yr. old asks what I’m making her! Also, I just wanted to add a thank you for all of your informational posts. The posts on lighting for photography has changed my life! I always enjoy reading!
I totally agree — best looking peasant costume EVER! I was coveting your lace collection until I read that the apron was a pillowcase. Genius. Of corse, now I wish I had prettier pillowcases too
Wow it doesn’t even look like a costume, she could easily wear it everyday
And she COULD wear it all the time! It’s darling, and still so appropriate for “Today”. You did a fabulous job!!!
Oh, I LOVE the peasant tops! They are adorable and the fabrics are gorgeous!
I’d want to wear that top all the time, too.
You are the best mom ever. I love making costumes and this is a beauty. Aside from the fake moustaches my 7 year old received for a birthday present, this would be #2 on the list of “Can I wear that to school today?” Okay, the 7 year is a boy and it’s his sister (10) that would want to wear this. Just needed to clarify. Amazing

Oh I love the apron so much. I need one like that!
So very clever with the pillowcase idea! I made some pioneer outfits for my girls recently (7 and 9) and they wore them nonstop for several weeks! I had the most fun with the aprons and finding old-fashioned looking fabric for them.
we want to see little peasant leil!
I love the apron the best! So cute with the detail! Way to be thrifty using a pillowcase!
That is so pretty!
Oh I am thinking she was the best dressed as well…what a cute little peasant she musta been!
Goodness, that is an adorable outfit! If buy costume, you mean something that she could wear anytime, then huzzah for costumes! And for moms who make them.
It’s absolutely adorable, and what a great idea to make an apron out of pillowcase!!!!
What absolutely gorgeous clothes. Never mind for dressing up, I would wear them.
I was just about to say: I want to wear it all the time, too! So cute!! I’ve been dreaming of making a top out of that same fabric but never have. It looks even sweeter than I imagined. Perfect combination!
What a gorgeous costume – my daughter would wear it all the time too! I love the fabrics you used, and the pillowcase for the apron – it’s beautiful!!!! I’m going to have to make one for my daughter if I can find a pillowcase suited for it! Wonderful! Oh – the end of school snuck up on me this year too – first time for me… I wonder if it will be a trend!
