Favicons

This is the new favicon I made for my website. I made one last year for my blog and I had to laugh at the time because I didn’t even know what they were called. I googled for something like “little picture on the web address bar” and found it.

Today I used this very cool free favicon generator program. It takes any picture file and creates the .ICO file. It worked best when the starting picture file was already square. Please don’t ask how many designs I went through to get to this! The generator website contains instructions on how and where to change the website or blog header file to associate the .ICO file with your web address. If you have trouble shoot me an e-mail because we all deserve a colorful favicon!

2/23/08: Several of the comments have mentioned limitations with Blogger because they don’t allow you to store the .ICO file on their server. Here’s a post about getting around that limitation by storing your .ICO file on a free web storage site such as Flickr (Linda commented that she did this successfully, yay, isn’t her bird cute!).

    You. Are. A. Goddess.

I had to ask SuperEggplant’s brother to make an .ico for my last blog, and I didn’t want to bother him again for my new one. Thanks to you, I have a lovely skein of yarn in a red barn. Woo hoo!

    Love your pink “P”!

You inspired me to figure out how to get one on my blog! Because I don’t have access to the folder where my blog is but can edit the html file, I went a slightly different route. I made a tiny gif and uploaded it to flickr, then stuck the same code from the link you gave {link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”myfavicon.gif”} in the html file. Voila, and thank you!

Thanks for the link. I made a favicon about 3 years ago with a Photoshop plugin. Now I want a new one. However I have a new computer without the plugin. The plugin in nowhere to be found. Now I’m going to get to work on a new design.

I love your new favicon! I’ve been thinking about doing one for a long time, but I am so lame at anything that gets a bit “computer-y” (ha ha!), so thank you for the link! I’ll be trying that out later. Brilliant.

Kathy, I think you have just unleashed a massive bout of “Favicon Fever”! Your blog is always an inspiration, thanks so much for your tips and tutorials. Your favicon looks brilliant, I noticed it on Bloglines, before I even opened the post.

Thank you once again! I went to the site and after a little trial and error, got one to work on my web….now I am off to try and get it onto the blog. I really appreciate you sharing the info, and as usual you are a few steps ahead of me. I had just started to wonder about how much effort it would take to add one of those “pretty picture thingies” that come up on some urls :)

Update on getting the favicon onto blogger…I put the icon in my own .com(my domain) web files and used the blogger code to point to that file.

    Thanks again, Marguerita

Alrighty, I’ve been trying to do this ever since you posted about it. I meticulously followed the steps from Yahoo! site builder and nothing. But apparently I did something right because a few days after I thought I’d give up it just magically appeared. It’s only on my site, not my blog (no can do with free Wordpress), but cool, nonetheless! Thanks!
