Winter Geese #1 for the Four Seasons Quilt Swap. 16″ x 16″. Paper pieced, commercial fabrics.

Tackling Plan D led me back to EQ6 for design inspiration. A search for “Geese” resulted in 48 hits. These four blocks jumped right out. They’re called Crazy Geese, 1 through 4. I printed paper foundation patterns for an 8″ finished block. The fabrics and color scheme carried forward from Plan C2. The Kona cottons were used for the block components containing a Flying Geese pattern.
This is the first quilt I’ve made with repeating blocks that are each slightly different. I like the symmetry. It could work big too. I named it #1 because I would like to do more. The paper piecing was very straightforward and quick. As usual, choosing fabrics, determining the final orientation of the blocks, and quilting were the time consuming tasks.

I opted for straight lines on each shape. A conscious effort was made to orient the lines within a block at different angles yet repeat the pattern for each shape across the blocks. I like the movement that element added. The geese quilting was connected so I wouldn’t have to start and stop for each triangle!
It’s bold. That’s what I like about it. Hopefully not too bold for my partner. I participated in the swap because I knew it would push me to challenge myself. I have a very hard time just making something out of thin air. Themes give purpose and force me to explore new directions. This was a wonderfully creative kick off to 2008, thank you Margaret for organizing the swap!

This is wonderful! I could look at it for a long time and the color palette suggests the hope of Spring while in the darkness of Winter. I am sure your swap partner will love it (if she doesn’t let me know!LOL) Cheers.
Boy, YOU are fabulous with color did you know that?
I always love what you choose for fabrics and color and I don’t say that too often to people. Bravo!
Mary Lou
These colors are great – each for themselves and combined! I love your final version! However, I have to admit that I also liked the pictorial quilt very much! And I don’t see why you are not good at it.
Definitely the best one! This seems like such a fun swap.
Oh, wow! That is just gorgeous! Thank you so much for sharing! Now I really wish I had known about this swap. Looks like so much fun!
Neat! There’s a lot going on in these! Gotta love EQ and paper piecing. How fun would it be do do a quilt with more repeats of the block and end up with a block with each piece has flying geese drafted into it!
oops! “TO do”, not “do do”, and definately not doo-doo!
Wow, that looks awesome! I love the colors and how they’re all similar, but just slightly different.
Very, very interesting little quilt. I love the piecing variations among the flying geese elements–a great idea. No, an INSPIRED idea. Thanks for sharing the thought process and the finished product.
Oh wow, that’s amazing. So kinetic! I loved seeing the progression of your process too. And for what it’s worth, I really the trees picture you started with.
Really LIKED the trees picture… Must learn to edit better…
I liked all three runners-up, but this one is FABULOUS. I hope the one I get is even half as cool!
I just love everything you make.
Simply stunning!
Love it! I love bold colors!
Your final quilt looks great. That EQ6 must be a lot of fun, I love doing paper piecing.
Wow! Kathy, this is really beautiful, you outdid yourself, love the bold colors.
I love it! It’s always great to hear about the experiments you go through to end up with a given piece, and how you get the impetus in the first place. Though I do have to say I like your start on a pictoral quilt as well. It’s probably one of those things where you probably can’t live up to your own expectations, but I think the mask quilt you did is a good example of a stunning success that’s in the pictoral quilt vein.
OMG…. Your winter quilt for the swap is just GORGEOUS!!!
wow! This is gorgeous. You may have pushed me into the realm of quiting. You do such beautiful work.
I love your Winter-swap quilt. I think your swap-partner will be thrilled to receive it. It’s great to see your first Wintery Landscape, the progress and the final step. The fabrics you used are gorgeous! I think you have a great eye for pictorial quilts as well!
Such a shame EQ6 is not available for Apple Macintosh computers.
That is such a dynamic block, I love how you have put them together and the colour choices too, the whole thing has so much movement. My absolute favourite is the way the purple “geese” look like they’re flying off into the distance.
BEAUTIFUL Kathy! I don’t expect anything less of course!!
Very bold, very inspired–love it! Great quilt, Kathy!

Gorgeous! Loved seeing the thought process.
WOW! Amazing!!!!!
I’m way behind on my blog reading, but I love this for the energy and all the different sizes and shapes of the geese. I can’t say I’m a fan of paper piecing, but it sure looks great! Also, I adore that pictorial tree quilt from the previous post. I’d love to see that finished!
This quilt is just goregous. Love the colours, love the angles love it all.
I really love that quilt. This is a surprise to me because I don’t seem to buy those colours or even prints but I really really like it. And you got a great comment from Mary Lou Weidman – that’s got to feel good.
Thanks for sharing this.

Wow. You did a fabulous job on these! I love the coordinated quilting from shape to shape and the small changes in each block. Such a great interpretation on the theme!
It is really beautiful! Love the colors.
All I could say is it is, truly great. I would not change anything.
