UFO Sighting
Jan 20th, 2008 by Kathy

My Out of the Box creativity group kicked off 2008 with a New Year’s worthy bang. We actually took on two challenges, no fear as we flipped the calendar to January! The first item drawn from the box was to finish a UFO. I totally dug the symbolic timing of that entry. (I’ll share the second in my next post.)
This is a Lonni Rossi Infinity Blocks quilt kit. I pieced this top 3 years ago. It’s waited ever so patiently since, in a plastic Jumbo bag waiting its turn for finishing. I just pulled out the bag, cut a backing, cut the batting, taped, pinned, and quilted that baby. It was tempting to put aside the sandwich on the meeting’s eve but I forced myself to proceed with cutting and sewing on the binding. We all know what can happen to a quilt that’s missing the binding. I can trust myself to finish the hand work which I did in short order.
I did a quick Google for the pattern name to make sure I was spelling everything correct. How fun to find that Lonni is still selling the same kit on her website. I left off the border and used that fabric on the back. I just didn’t think it needed the border. She has a lot of VERY COOL kits on her site. As a side note on kits: what fun! I always feel like they’re little classes in a box. A fabulous opportunity to learn new techniques and absorb the fabric eye of the designer. If I had more room on my plate I’d be making this one!
Focus, Kathy, focus…

This is gorgeous! I love the colors. Hmm, you think I need to pull out my little Joann’s kit? LOL
OHMYGOSH REALLY COOL!!! I love seeing your work!
The quilt is lovely! One of my favourite colour-shemes. I like it better without the broad border! Isn’t it strange that the most beautiful projects end up in a box? Thanks for the link to Lonni Rossi’s website. Beautiful fabrics and patterns!
Your photo is way better. It’s a great looking quilt - really interesting colour mix and I definitely prefer it without the border!
this is so very lovely - though I’m not into brownish or orange colorways this quilt looks very appealing to me. maybe it’s the combination of both or the way the yellow and orange spots brighten up this creation… I can’t even tell you why, but it is lovely ^-^
louise is right - it’s beautiful without the border!
The Autumn colors are so pretty and great job finishing a UFO, I have a few of those I should work on too.
I saw that quilt in a Fons and Porter magazine and just loved it. I hope to make it some day. I had just started quilting when I saw it and thought it might be too difficult but now I feel ready. Yours looks as good as the one in the magazine.
I have a quilt top that’s been pieced and ready to be quilted for 6 months! I’m scared to start the actual quilting because it’s my first and I don’t know what I’m doing. So it sits in the closet mocking me. It will probably be there for another year. In fact, I don’t even like the colors anymore.
Congrats on a finished project. And thanks for the link to Lonni Rossi’s site. Love her fabrics but I’ve never explored her website before.
beautiful! this reminds me a lot of the quilts by Funquilts.
Congrats on finishing another project!
Wow! I love the quilt. And good for you to push on through past the binding! I’ve got the same problem with the one and only quilt I’ve made. After two years it’s finally tied, but still no binding…!
Your quilt is stunning- I love the unusual combination of those beautiful rich colours. And your photography is exquisite as usual!
I have that giant onion hanging in my kitchen as I write this. I loved doing that kit. It was so much thread painting and was good to see how that can really perk up a design.
I really like the one you did also……Lonni is relatively new to me, and her things are such a temptation.
It’s lovely! Congratulations on completing it. I’m working on UFO’s myself.
My first and only kit quilt is in that group. You have inspired me to try and finish it soon.
What a gorgeous quilt and great way to kick off the new year!
Great colors! What is the size? Did I miss that?
Yes, definitely a different and better look without the border. Very nice, and isn’t it SO good to finish one that’s been around for a while?
So glad you finished it because it is beautiful. I am in the process of making a quilt for my husband and I thought I finally settled on a design but you’ve thrown me for a loop! May need to reconsider it all once again.
I love the quilt - and I love your honesty about it being stuffed in a bag for all this time. (Welcome to my world!) The onion is terrific, thanks for the link, I had never been to Lonni Rossi before.
stunning quilt, love the line and color…
I missed posting the size! 42″ x 42″
What a gorgeous quilt. It’s like finding exciting treasures when you dive into your ufo box isn’t it? I’m hoping to see a few old friends againt his year myself!
Beautiful! Isn’t it sad, the things that are left languishing in our “to do — someday” bag? Of course, I don’t think I have anything this fine waiting for my attention, but still….
Those aren’t normally my colors but they are very nice… I do love the pattern. I’ve been not-so-into borders on my quilts lately, that one definitely looks better without!
It must have been fantastic to finish your quilt after 3 years !!!!!
I love it Kathy…it reminds me of an Atari game!
Beautiful! I finished a UFO quilt last week - it feels sooooo good. :^)
Absolutely beautiful quilt! I love the colors in this. And what a great feeling to finish an old project - especially one as lovely as this.
This is a great quilt! I love Lonni’s fabrics, they’re among my favorites to work with.
very beautiful.
wow kathy, this one is a beauty for sure! glad you were able to finish it with such gusto. really pretty…

p.s. my daughter LOVES the pencil roll!
Wow…gorgeous. Congrats on finishing up a UFO!
I just wanted to say thanks for your post on lighting, which seems forever ago. We got the supplies and the difference is amazing! My pics finally do some justice. That was so helpful. Photography is my weakest skill, but now I can’t wait to play around with it. Thanks, again!
I just linked over to the post “Another One Bites the Dust” from September and saw that you were planning on posting a tutorial about machine binding, but I can’t seem to find it on your site. Did you get a chance to do it, because I would love to see your method. I am facing the hand finishing of my first quilt and keep putting it off…
It’s gorgeous - I have a (ever-growing) collection of Lonni Rossi fabrics; perhaps if I had a kit, something might get made from some of them…
I really like it without the border. What a great job.
Oh that’s fabulous! I love the richness and depth of her fabrics and I love that patchwork pattern. I know the fabrics you’ve used, so I know it’s even more interesting in person (which is only a compliment to the quilt - that’s a great photo).
The colorway of ths quilt reminds me of the scarf you did for your MIL … what are your plans for this one?
Laughed out loud about only-binding-left-to-do quilts … poor Ems brought me the monkey quilt off her bed just yesterday and asked “Please finsish this Mommy”. Yes, I admit it, my daughter was sleeping under an unfiinshed quilt. You are not alone! Thanks as usual for the inspiration to get moving.
Your quilt looks great. I’m very impressed you finished a UFO. Like most quilters I have a few LOL…
I like your version/picture better than the advertised one at Lonni’s. These colors are fabulous. I’m interested in more about your creative out of the box group. I love that way of thinking, and I wonder how to start/join one.
Hi Kathy!
WOW!!! I LOVE this quilt. This one is so up my alley. You are just such a talented chickie! Pulling out an old project and finishing it is such a big deal. Good for you!
