Selling on eBay V - Show Me The Money
Jan 14th, 2008 by Kathy

The dough! Get it, the dough. One of my favorite things about having children are all the jokes that no one gets. Masa is probably stretching it here. The girls and I made tamales for Christmas Eve. Chicken, Monterey Jack cheese (just a smidgen), and homemade salsa verde. Definitely an IOU recipe post.
Drum roll, please … $375.57! 27 lots of fabric (the total does not include my all time highest eBay sale of $70.99 for the karaoke game).
What sold?
Here are the completed listings (eBay requires you to sign in to your eBay account in order to see completed listings so you’ll get prompted for that via this link). Matching sets and designer labels, that’s what it’s all about.
Top money maker: I purchased the Maison De Noel kit from Moda several years ago. I opted to make another project with the fabric and ended up with half the kit, some remnants and the pattern left over. Lots of bidding on this baby. I think this lot also benefited from the “this fabric is no longer available but it’s some of the prettiest fabric ever printed” phenomena as well.
To kick off this selling extravaganza, I pulled all the fabric I wanted to sell from my shelves. Once it was all down I debated between “color coordinated” sets vs. “themed sets”. SOOOO glad I went with the latter choice.
At the top of the bidding were designer names and eclectic, hip themes. People that purchased the sets with boring names got a very good value. I do that myself as a buyer on eBay, I look for values that get overlooked because they don’t scream “very cool, you must have me”.
I cut a lot of my odd ends into 5″ and 3 1/2″ squares depending on how big the remnant was. That was a short lived strategy. It’s a lot of work to cut fabric squares! I ended up doing one big lot of these squares which sold high.
Was it worth it?
Most definitely. I never regret giving something a go. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I always learn a lot in the process. Am I going to turn my energy to becoming the ruler of eBay fabric sales? NO WAY!
Man, did I gain respect for those of you that do this full time. It is a lot of work. From the process of readying the fabric for sale (ironing, organizing, double checking for flaws), photographing the lots, creating the listings, answering questions, processing sales, packaging the items (this requires actually keeping track of exactly who bought what and keeping the cat off the stack of fabric), shipping, and leaving feedback for buyers, I got a true education at eBay University.
I also fully acknowledge that I had more bidders because of all you guys checkin’ out the goods (thank you!!!). If I’d made any less I really would have questioned the value of my time.
I totally stress out about making sure any one that buys anything I sell is happy with their purchase. If I sold full time on eBay I’d be a nervous wreck!!!
Thanks to everyone that’s commented on the last series of posts. If I didn’t answer the question you had be sure to leave it and I’ll respond in the comments.

mmmmmm, tamales. thanks for the ebay series.
Tamales sound really good! Are you glad its over? LOL
Sounds like you should celebrate.
Wow, congratulations on your eBay success! I’ve been following your ’selling’ series with interest - I’m glad it paid off for you
Great job! It is a lot of work and fabric selling seems to be especially fussy! I sold on eBay full-time for 3 years and burned out finally. How extra kind of you to share your tips while doing this.
Thanks for sharing your experience on ebay. It was great of you to write it all up. Can’t wait to see what you’re up to in 2008.
Congrats on all the sales! I’ve done ebay and I burned out. Right now I’d just love a tamale.
Thanks for sharing your positive experience.
Joni
Congratulations on your ebay sucess !!!
I’ve only bought fabric off e bay twice, due to the lack of any good fabric shops around here.. It’s not something i’m hugely fused on as I can never tell the quality of the fabric, unless it’s by a well known designer.
I’ve been selling fabric and wool fiber on ebay for just over six months now. Yes, it’s not always easy, but I am surrounded by bolts and bolts of the fabrics I love and I get to do it on my own terms. Ebay is a great place to shop if you know what you’re looking for. We ebay sellers often have our fabrics listed well below what you’ll find in a brick and mortar store. Plus, you can feel good about supporting a small business person….like me!
Sarah: Please add a link to your eBay store or your eBay seller name so we can all find you!
Thanks Kathy
My ebay store is called Ruby’s Daughter (that’s me!) and the direct link is here: http://stores.ebay.com/Rubys-Daughter-Fabrics
my ebay seller name is 01rubysdaughter
Great job! Thank you for sharing your experience with us all, and the tamales look tooooo tempting.

Thank you for the ebay tips. You have no idea how timely they are for me.
Wow, that is impressive! My husband sells a lot of university press books on Ebay and does quite well. It always seems like a lot of work to me. He has encouraged me to try to cleanse my fabric stash the same way. I wonder if older quilter’s fabric from say, JoAnn’s would sell as well?
