We’ve lived in Washington 3 years this month. The weather is always big news. Snow, rain, sunshine, big news, period. One term I’d never heard before was ’sun break’. It refers to the sun peaking through the gray skies and clouds on a winter day. The weather report goes something like “intermittent showers and sun breaks throughout the day.”
When the sun comes through it’s gorgeous. The winter angle is nothing short of spectacular. On the eve of the solstice it’s particularly beguiling. I spent the day puttering in my sewing room, organizing, working some last minute Christmas fun, and listening to the final chapters of Eragon. Simba is always there with me. Snoozing the day away on a high perch.
He always hops down and soaks in the sun when it comes. I enjoy sitting there too, looking out the window, letting the rays warm my face. I’m already dreaming about the New Year and how I’d like it to unfold.

Sounds like a lovely way to spend the day.
We’ve enjoyed listening to Eragon also- it got us through many miles in the car.
It looks like you live in such a beautiful place. I would have thought there would be snow at this time of year though? Here we’ve been having rain, rain, rain, which sounds a bit dreary, but after years of drought it’s WONDERFUL. Happy Christmas!
Oh, I remember sun breaks! I grew up in Portland and we moved from Seattle to Phoenix about 2 years ago. I don’t miss the rain at all, but I do miss the delight of seeing the sun peek out just to remind us that it was still around. Enjoy!
Mmmm. Look at your lovely view. However, it is a lovely green view. I feel like we’ll never have green again in Wisconsin. Your Simba looks like my Toulouse. Maine Coon?
He is the picture of contentment there.
(p.s. I’ve made my first Rubble Work Scarf and I’m very excited to give it to the recipient in a few days. And its a good thing I very clearly intended it for her when I started it or I’d so be keeping it for myself. I haven’t blogged a finished photo yet, but I’ll definitely be doing that when I have a minute to get a good shot. Even the unfinished product drew one comment from someone who was going to come over here and check out the pattern!)
Look at that green-ness outside your window! I remember green. I think we used to have it here in Wisconsin but it was a long time ago.
A very regal kitty! the sunlight is fantastic. I am a huge advocate of natural light and really enjoy the late afternoon sunshine.
He is a handsome guy! Any resolutions?
Beautiful photo! I so want to get to Bainbridge island some time soon. We’ve still got the green grass under our little dusting of snow, but last night it got cold enough to freeze all the water on the rain chains. So pretty. The snow really sparkles too. Wonder if any of it will stay around for Christmas?
Ooh, that was yesterday morning wasn’t it? I thought about running to get the camera but then just stood there remembering why I love the rain: because when the sun comes out everything is bright and scrubbed clean. There’s no dust around here! I love it!
What a beautiful view. I don’t blame Simba, I’d be up there myself!
what a beautiful view!
I love sunbreaks!
and that’s why I returned to the west side for college, Eastern Washington just doesn’t cut it in the winter.
I so enjoy reading your blog, seeing your many projects and I love the picture with your cat looking out the window. What a wonderful, peaceful view you have. Thanks for all you do.

Hey, our cats are twins!
Only 3 years? You could pass for a native. I’d say this place suits you.
Merry Christmas!
Wow, I love your idea for the art rolls thingys to put your pen/pencils into. But I don’t know if I would ever have time to make my own. Do you sell them? I didn’t see them in your Etsy shop.
