My three sisters and I grew up with stockings handmade by my Grandmother. She made them from pre-quilted cotton fabric and each had a large letter of our first name. We liked wearing them on our feet. I drafted a pattern for mine that looks to be exactly the same size. I don’t remember doing that intentionally but there’s no doubt when I look at this photo. My kids also like to wear them on their feet. And in case you were wondering, there’s absolutely nothing minimalist about my Christmas decorating.

Love them! Is that red velvet? And the heel detail is a great touch.
We had these super long red knitted stockings as kids with our names on them. They held a lot! We liked to wear them on our feet too…except they were so long they actually went up to our thighs.
The stockings are beautiful!
Pretty stockings!! I love the velvet. My mom made my brother and my stockings when we were kids.. needlepoint and applique, I think. Mine had a bell on it. Aww.
Right now I have one I knitted last year for the kiddo but it’s HUGE!! I should line it. I wish it was wool because I would felt it to make it smaller. Ah well. Now I just need to make one for us so our store bought ones don’t look so goofy next to his gargantuan handknitted glory
Meg, yes, it’s red velvet! I’m a glutton for punishment when it comes to choosing hard to sew fabrics.
Carrie, I made these two years ago so that all 4 of us would match
I’m loving the memories of your Christmas stockings! A good reminder about what our kids will remember in the years to come.
HI there! I came over from Scent of Water because the title of your blog is so compelling, and what did I find! Orange lanterns on the fireplace mantel!!!!!!!!!!! Gorgeous picture indeed! Thanks for the lift….Janice
Those are very pretty!!!
Wonderful stockings…I love their tradtion with a twist look! You’ve been busy…I’m behind reading. Such fun seeing all the Rubblework Scarf variations, including new ones of your own! Happy Days

My grandmother made ours too. We use store bought needlepoint ones now but I want to try to make new ones, next year though.
I can’t remember if I have commented on your blog before but I just wanted to say how much I love it!!! It is one of the first I check every morning. Your style is just beautiful. Christmas stockings?? Okay, I’m gonna date myself, but we used actual stockings!!! We’d drag one of daddy’s out of his drawer every Christmas eve!!! Have a joyous holiday–you are appreciated.
I don’t trust under-decorators!! Love the stockings, and the beautiful photo.
Your photos are so, so beautiful, always. I am a minimalist when it comes to decorating. I always love pictures I see in magazines like country living, where there are decorative “things” everywhere, but I can’t stand it if things get to “cluttered” for me. So this year, it is the tree, one nativity, and a simple strand of icicle lights along the front of the garage.
I am going to try to photograph my pencil rolls- I made seven for Christmas!!!
Those are beautiful and will bring joy for years to come. I’m loving those paper lanterns on the mantel. One of favorite plants!
Those stockings are so lovely!
I love these. I’m not in love with the ones we’ve been using for the last 9 years but just haven’t found the inspiration to make new ones. Maybe I’ll just keep using the old ones since it seems like they’ll have memories attached to them one day.
My decorating is very minimalist this year - as in none at all!
Maybe today.
Oh, Kathy–these are so gorgeous! I was just thinking I need to make a couple of stockings for here (my real stocking still lives with my parents) and sewing would be so much quicker than knitting–and so pretty too!
They are beautiful. My mom let us girls make our stockings with puffy paint and glitter. She still uses them at her house.
Just lovely! Those are really too cute. Nice photo, too. Fancy fancy.
Those are very pretty stockings! And the photograph is just beautiful as usual!!
Those stockings are beautiful! You should make a pattern to sell. Now, that I am going to be a mom soon, I would love to make a stocking for my baby girl’s first Christmas next year.
Fantastic stockings, I particularly love the heels! -kb
your mantel is beautiful! Chinese lanterns are my very fav.
I agree with everyone else, I am in love with your stockings! I love the quilted top, the heel patch, and the size is just right for stuffing full of little goodies! We always opened our stocking gifts last, each gift was wrapped so it would take forever! It was just the last little bit of excitment/anticipation on Christmas day when we were little. I really love my memories of that! I think a pattern would be kind of fun! Thank you for sharing!

Darling stockings! We used to love to wear them on our feet, too!
They are gorgeous!

Hee, hee - looks like there is still some fall decorating there also! I love those orange Chinese lanterns! I remember my dad grew them in our yard in Seattle when I was a kid.
