Fabric Exchange - Completed Project
Dec 9th, 2007 by Kathy

If you’ve sewn with satin you know how I felt when I opened up my bag and saw these two cuts of fabric. I noodled over ideas for a few days and woke up one morning with my Eureka moment.
Satin pillow cases! For us curly headed girls, they keep our hair from tangling while sleeping. My sister also had a set when she was going through chemotherapy. More gentle on fragile locks.
This free pattern from Esther’s was a good match because it uses french seams. I didn’t have to finish off the edges of the satin. You’ll notice I punted on the synthetic organza, just a teeny tiny strip along the cuff to be official.
I’ve made this pattern before here and here.
It also matches Leil’s quilt perfectly. You can tell how much she likes it by all the wrinkles.

Oh, satin pillows are NICE!!!!!
I had no idea satin pillowcases were good for curly hair (not to mention they’re so pretty!). My son’s hair always has a dreadlock in back by the morning, I wonder if that would help? He has straight hair, but I’d love to not have those knots!!
That satin pillowcase looks so lovely!
I should have known you’d get creative on us.
Nice work!
That sounds so soft against one’s face. I’m going to have to re-think my prejudices about shiny fabrics…
Great use of your fabric–I’ve been waiting to see what you were going to come up! I’ll have to seek some out for myself, as my hair is naturally curly, too. I didn’t realize satin was good for that type of hair.
It all looks great with your quilt and curtains.
Pretty and functional! Great solution to the challenge.
Wonderful, satin is the best for curly hair! I have the most straight hair, so I need fabric that makes curls into my hair while sleeping!
I love all the fabrics you used in the room!
gorgeous - totally!
What a lovely solution! And how strange to see Leil’s curtains two minutes after I posted a photo of my family room curtains (which are exactly the same).
Way to punt on the organza. Hee hee. But seriously - that is a great one for the satin. I’m sure it feels like a sophisticated luxury for Leil. The only time I used satin was as the lining of drawstring bags which was nice cause the seams were all on the inside of the bag so I didn’t finish them either.
Very luxurious for a tween and a good solution for your challenge.
Love it! Pretty, useful, and as always, so well done. Man, there’s nothing like a satin pillowcase on curly hair.
stunning and functional!
