Fabric Exchange - Raw Materials
Dec 8th, 2007 by Kathy

My monthly American Sewing Guild meeting was on Thursday. We celebrated the holidays with a potluck brunch and the unveiling of projects made from our orphaned fabric exchange. I took a batch of my Mom’s Thumbprint Cookies filled with raspberry jam. Yum.
In July, each member brought 2 yards of orphaned fabric from the stash. We randomly traded sealed paper bags. Mine contained this nice heavyweight navy blue satin and synthetic organza. Hmmm, what would you make? I’ll share my creation tomorrow!

This recipe makes a nice small batch of cookies (approximately 20). I usually double the recipe when doing my official holiday baking.
Mary Mack’s Thumbprint Cookies
1/2 cup butter
1/3 cup sugar
2 eggs, separated
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup finely chopped pecans
1 jar of fruit jam
Cream together butter and sugar. Separate eggs. Beat egg yolks and add to creamed butter and sugar. Reserve egg whites for later use. Mix in vanilla, flour, and salt. Chill dough for several hours.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Form dough into 1 inch balls. Roll in slightly beaten egg white and then finely chopped pecans. Place on a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper. Bake 5 minutes. Make thumbprints and fill with jam. Bake another 8 minutes.

My mom always made thumbprint cookies and now the tradition is mine. I loooove them!!

I can’t wait to see what you made!!!
Thanks for sharing the recipe! By the way, that is a neat-o bit of fabric or paper underneath your blue fabrics. Tablecloth?
Can’t wait to see what you whipped up…
The fabrics will do great in your scarf pattern, or in some fabric post cards, with some wintery hills covered with snow added, and/or the moon. I like your cookies, wonderful recipe. I guess the 375 degrees are Fahrenheit? My oven goes to 220 (Celcius).
Your mom’s name is Mary Mack? That must have inspired a lot of song!! Kinda like Paula married to Paul…

The blue fabric would make a lovely bag with perhaps some silvery machine emdroidery on it. Love the layout of your site, very clear to follow. Found you today. Can I please be nosey and ask how you created your link from your blog/site to item description then shopping cart. I think your photos and text make your patterns very appealing. I tried E-junkie but could not get a decent description section set up.
Thanks
Andrea
Andrea: I write all the code for my website using a development product called Dreamweaver. I explored using different e-commerce services but I always found them limiting in some way and wanted more control over the design.
As far as the blog, I use a Wordpress plugin called Sidebar Widgets. It allows me to place html in those side bar sections making the link easy to do.
[…] If you’ve sewn with satin you know how I felt when I opened up my bag and saw these two cuts of fabric. I noodled over ideas for a few days and woke up one morning with my Eureka moment. […]
