Threading a Bead on a Ribbon

Several meetings ago, my ASG group shared tips and tricks. Robyn Spady, a talented weaver, shared her method for threading beads onto fringe. I adapted the method for putting beads on the end of ribbon for Note Taker ties. Here’s a tutorial.

I’m planning to move all my tutorials to PDF format. I’ve always struggled with the formatting limitations of my WordPress page templates so it was very fun making it look all pretty. Now for the real question: Will it work? I’m a newbie when it comes to creating PDFs with the right amount of compression. My goal is small but not so small that the pictures suck. This file clocks in at 1.1 MB which still seems pretty humongous (my apologies for folks on dial-up!). If squeezing an Adobe InDesign file just right is your specialty, let’s talk!

I like the bird flying on the bottom of each page. I’ll ask my colleague about the files as I don’t personally know.

The bead adds that perfect touch! The PDF looks great too. I’d like to figure that out as well and put some of my tutorials in that format. As for file size, haven’t a clue. Good luck :)

When I’m exporting my document to PDf (using Adobe InDesign), it gives me choices for the size of my PDF. I use “Press Quality” for something that will actualy be printed (and have so far been impressed) and then “Standard” or “Web” for online uses. It seems to work OK for me. Of course. I think it is all dependent on what program yu use to build you document as the what choices you’ll have. Looks good though!

PDF’s are my specialty. All my work is delivered at printer’s offices in PDF.
All the proof sheets for my customers are send in PDF. All the downloadable files from websites are PDF. A wonderful invention! I don’t work with Indesign though, I work with Quark Xpress. I do have Indesign being a part of CS2, but up to now it didn’t appeal to me to use it. Kristin L explained already how to make a PDF from an Indesign document. Good luck! And thanks for the tutorial, it looks great and the bead is a lovely finishing touch to the note taker!

I’m glad you’re switching to pdfs. I save these type of things to a folder on my desktop so I can find them when I need them.

There’s a method? The PDF hangs up my computer, but I’ll try again later.

Thanks for the tutorial. This is one of those great ideas that make you say “why didn’t I think of that?!” LOL!

The link to the pdf doesn’t work for me. I’m running Internet Explorer 7.0. I took a peak at your code. I think the code is more complicated that necessary. Give this a try Threading a Bead on a Ribbon

Sorry for the second comment. WordPress converted the html code that I entered. So look at the code behing the link. It works. I tested it.

    Great tutorial, great tips. Thanks!

I have experience with pdfs but not with InDesign. I use Quark (and mainly Freehand). One tip that I could give you is to make sure your photos are sized down to 72 dpi and to the exact dimensions you are using them in your page. (but you probably already now all this!)

The pdf opened great for me!

I love the tutorial. You made something that ‘looks easy’ but ‘is tricky’ actually ‘easy’. That’s almost a tongue twister!

I’m having loads of fun with your pencil roll pattern and went looking for your tutorial on threading a bead. It doesn’t come up for me. Is the pdf gone? I tried going through all the comments to see if anyone left any clues as to how to thread a bead … no luck :-(

A huge thank you to Amy for letting me know the tutorial was broken. I’ve re-uploaded the file and everything is a go now.

Thanks, Kathy! Who would’ve thunk flossers had so many uses?!? Had no clue from everyone’s comments that flossers were the magic trick. Off to Rite-Aid tomorrow in search of flossers ;-)

See you at the Indie Banditas Bazaar in a few weeks.

This is a fantastic site, would you be involved in doing an interview about just how you created it? If so e-mail me!
