How to Bury Serger Threads

A little photo tutorial on how to bury serger threads. This is a quick trick I learned in a ‘How to Use Your Serger’ class I took at Esther’s. It was taught by my friend Johanna Branley. The best money I’ve EVER spent on a class. Johanna has the most amazing talent of being able to thread and operate any brand of serger. If you don’t know everything you should about your serger, seek out a class at a local shop. I owned mine for 5 years before learning to use it. It’s never too late!

There’s absolutely no way you’ll ever guess in a million years what I’m making here…but if you dare take a spin at the wheel…there is treasure to be had. (Yes, I’m a total copy cat.)

I think you’re making a bag of some sort. I’m going to take a wild guess and say it’s the Amy Butler Weekender Tote since I see what appears to be a long zipper and some interfacing or stabilization. It’s a stab in the dark.

a pencil case, a pencil case!
    or? …
very hard to guess, you’re right. but i do think it’s something “bag-ish.”

Interesting, I never thought about hiding serger thread. I work in our uni costume shop and we just snip it off, but of course those are industrial sergers, I don’t know what you’re using (like how many bobbins or industrial or domestic and the like) but ours hold even when snipped completely to the fabric. I can’t figure out what you may be making, the best I can come up with is some sort of bag, being that the serged ends will probably be hidden, and it looks like there’s a zipper (possibly 16″) and I can’t think of any garments in which you would put a zipper on in this fashion, so my guess is a bag of the purse variety or given the pattern perhaps a fun diaper bag?

I think you’re making a padded sleeve for your car’s shoulder seat belt! I need to learn to use a serger. . . .

Maybe the straps to a backpack?…only cause I just did mine as I’m making my daughter a book bag/backpack and I did the straps similar to these last night. But they look a bit short…

I have no idea what you’re making but I can’t wait to see it! And I am off to read that tutorial.

I’m going to guess tote bag handles, but that would be way too easy, wouldn’t it? So how about an alice band for your hair?

That appears to be a zipper gusset. I’m guessing a back-to-school tote of some sort for one of the girls

Cool! I normally thread them through a tapestry needle.
What are you making? Something “back to school” related? A pencil case? A lunch box?

My serger is pretty much unknown territory past serging seams. You always make me want to do something new.. (like have you tell me how to do everything!!!)

Hrm. Tab top curtains? Best guess I have.
The serger is a wonderful thing in the shop, until I had to thread it. Never got the hang of that! I don’t think I will anytime soon, seeing as how I don’t have one, but maybe one day!

Everyone else has the same idea. I immediately thought that they looked like straps to a tote bag. Hmm, but maybe it’s not that. Maybe they’re going to be for some amazing new pattern that you’re working on? Or it could be that you’re making a padded travel case for your sewing machine to take with you on all these great classes at Esther’s?

I don’t know why but it makes me think of overall straps. Hmmmm….

My first thought was a tote bag. My second thought was a carpet bag (and that would be the reinforcement you’re working on). But since you said we’d never guess, I’m going NOTE TAKER! :)

My first thoughts were like almost everyone else… and then I remembered it’s back to school. I expect this is the next level up from the notetaker and is instead a binder wrap with a built in pencil case etc. This would explain the zipper and the serged edges which will later be enclosed. If this is the case the thread tucking is good but I’ve become a fan of fray check lately. Probably because I’ve been using my serger for “decorative” edging on cloth napkins etc.

Hmm. the thought of reinforcements is causing me to rethink. Perhaps it will become a pencil case that goes on the ring of ones binder. That would work too!

Hmm…. I was thinking make-up bag, but the back to school thoughts could be spot on, too. Maybe a lunch bag of sorts? I hope at least one of us is right!

I got my Note Taker pattern the other day and am very excited to get going on it. I have been mulling over selling a couple of my own patterns so I may have a couple of questions for you!

Those are serger threads! I learned something new today! I only know them from some clothes I bought, mostly sportswear. I think you are making a yoga-mat bag! You already have new curtains in the kitchen, so… a knitting-bag? No really, I haven’t the faintest idea!

My first thought was backpack straps too. But that does seem totally guess-able, so I’ll go with a new neck strap for your camera. (Guess why that’s on my mind :) )

Chopstick cozies? Rabbit ears? Fabric skillet handles? Thanks for the tutorial. I am frightened of my serger. I bought a video from Sewing with Nancy that I must watch to learn more.

What kind of serger do you use? Do you love it, hate it??

I have a Babylock Evolve which I love. I received it as a gift about 6 years ago from my husband.
