Cameras & Curry

A field trip to the Seattle Children’s Festival was the perfect opportunity to experiment with my Mother’s Day gift, a Canon PowerShot SD800 IS.

I love my Digital Rebel but man, oh man, is that thing heavy. A second camera feels extremely indulgent, but, hey, given my unpaid job is valued at $138,095 a year I think I’m worth it.

Besides rating EXTREMELY HIGH on the cute factor, the SD800 has this whole wide angle, endless depth of field thing going on that creates an aesthetic I’m really digging. My favorite auto-feature is how it picks up faces in the frame and makes that the focus point. I took the above photo with no flash. My goal is to carry my new friend with me where ever I go.

One thing the new camera didn’t do was make my food pictures any better. I think I could easily win the award for ‘most food photos taken by a blogger that have never been posted’. I’ll spare you and give you the links to two hits in my house this month. Yes, Padma really can cook.

  • Shrimp Boil Hobo Packs – easy, yummy, and Leil decided she now likes clams
  • Coconut Curry Stew – I made mine with chicken, easy (see a trend here?), the Indian curry flavor was refreshingly smoky and aromatic, a nice change from Thai style curry

    Hello!
How are you? I love to read your inspiring blog. Although my english is not perfect, I love it! Now I see that you live in Seattle, well my sister in law and her family live there too! (near the airport), I’ve never been there, but my husband did. He told me that Seatlle is very beautyfull, and the pictures he made where very nice! Thank you for all your creativity!

Bye bye from the Netherlands, from Mama Lieveheersbeestje.

I have a little camera in my purse all the time. Of course I had to get a bigger purse to carry my camera and my new little sketchbook, but it’s fun to be able to snap pictures wherever I go.
I really thought Padma was just a pretty face. Surprise, surprise!

Congrats on the new camera! Yes, since you’re a woman of many hats you should definitely have more than one camera. :-) Besides being a busy mama to two girls is huge job and deserves a reward. Enjoy!

I’m loving our Powershot. I may click the shutter a little indiscriminately, then post EVERY SHOT (or close) to Flickr, but I’m in recovery from thinking “pictures don’t matter” for too much of my life.

You gals are all so in the know. I was in Leil’s class this afternoon and talking with another parent who has a photography business on the side. He said these cameras all are the rage because of the small focal point (?, who knows, but he made it sound quite amazing) which gives it a wide angle perspective for taking group shots up close. Exactly what I was marveling over even though I didn’t know it was actually designed to do that.

You are worth it for sure. David has a little camera too that I need to be better about carrying everywhere. Bea’s always asking me to take a picture of something pretty and cute and I haven’t brought my camera because of the heavy factor… I’m loving the idea of endless depth of field/wide angle thing – my everyday lens is not that at all and I swear it is changing the way I see the world.

Very cool Kathy! I love popping my camera in my purse. I have the big one too with all the long lenses but you can’t beat a quick digital shot now and then!

I take my camera most places. I find myself taking, kind of nothing shots to tell the complete story. Next, if you haven’t got it already, the Photo shop or some other software to really ramp up those pics. I’ve discovered putting the story shots to music…fun, fun, fun…kills half a day though…
    Oh well, we’re worth it!
