Abby, I like to use a fusible web called Wonder Under. It can stand up to high iron heat and launders well. It’s also heavier than other fusibles which is a good thing for knee patches, not so great for quilts. I cut some fusible web a little larger than the patch I want, iron it to the back of the fabric, let cool, cut the patch out and then peel the paper off. I then iron to the pants on the outside. I use my free arm sewing machine to zig zag stitch around the patch. It’s a bit cumbersome but ensures the patch won’t come off. I’ve also hand stitched using a blanket stitch around the edges to re-enforce the patch and provide some decoration.

Thank you SO much for the little tutorial. I was just going to ask you how you apply your patches, because mine always seem to come off in no time at all (I do have a 16-year-old boy who skateboards!), but the fusible web stuff is a great idea. Thanks again. I love all your creativity!
Actually, living in the South, it’s officially that time of the school year when I cut off the legs and make shorts out of the hole-y pants! Much easier than patching!
Eek – I love this photo. Was she waiting for the bus? That view down the wet road/ the green of the trees/ sooo your neck of the woods. Cutest patches ever too.
Ahh, but I bet they’re the prettiest patches at shcool!
I would have made holes in my jeans if my mom could have patched them like you did. How cute is that! PS… I LOVE that Alexander Henry fabric!
Our knees look eerily similar, but not so pretty. I had to sacrifice one particularly well worn pair of pants to patch the knees on the others.
Cute patches. Don’t you just love the rain??
I’ve got a stack of pants that need patches! Why couldn’t the knees last just 1 more month of school. Katie’s won’t be nearly as pretty as these.
oh, now those are wonderful.
I need to patch my jeans in several places. Are you supposed to put the patches on the outside and what stitch do you use? Thanks.
Such pretty patches! Like your new header, too!

Those are great and it’s such a cute photo too. I’ve got some patchin’ to do too!
Cute patches though! It almost makes me want to put patches on my jeans, and I don’t even have holes in the knees:)
… and these knees look just great!
Oh, I love those patches!! You have such great ideas Kathy!! I really like the photograph as well. Cool view!
