Getting Organized

We kicked off Spring Break with yard work that made our bodies ache, house cleaning (the girls LIKE to vacuum, yippee) and ‘let’s get really organized’ type of organizing. I’m actually looking forward to not going anywhere this week and just enjoying a clean house with no schedules to tend to.

I wanted to share two of my latest organizing projects in my sewing room. I finally took the time to wrap all my embroidery floss and record the color number on each. The plastic case is made for storing the floss. I usually like to get creative with such solutions but the size of the little sections are a perfect design and worth the cost. I discovered 3 skeins of DMC 320, I must REALLY like that color green.

I’m a sucker for those little plastic containers of paint samples. The perfect amount for a small project. The shelf is Ace Hardware Saxton (B39-5). I sorted all my buttons by color because I finally decided that’s how I usually go about trying to find a button I want to use. I like the roominess of the wide mouthed Ball quart jars. Plenty of room to store buttons that are still on their cards. Contents can be dumped, perused and easily shoveled back into their home.

Here’s before pic of the shelf.

Thanks for all the lovely comments on my quilt. It’s been put on hold while I try and finish up my Out of the Box projects for Wednesday, and oh yeah, that texture quilt for ASG on Thursday! Eek. I also have 10 yards of organic compost waiting for me outside. Never enough hours in the day!

I’m also a big fan of the small paint samples! I love the pincushion sitting next to your tiny quilt! The quilt isn’t a slouch either I might add! Really cool!

Now for a question. Mind me asking what kind of shelf you have your fabric sitting on? Maybe something you bought from a well known place where I can buy something similar? I’m looking for shelving to better organize my stash. Thanks!

An Ikea special. I’ve had it for about a year now, it’s perfect for me. Of course, I still have 7 plastic tubs of clothing fabrics, ribbons, patterns, and scraps…

Laurie at Old School Acres made the pin cushion for me. Her gorgeous signature design. I use it for my embroidery needles.

I, too, use those plastic containers and spools for my cross-stitch threads. They are awesome. I love the curtains next to the shelving along with those in the picture of the quilt in your last post. I want to thank you for sharing the tutorial for your water bottle carriers several months ago. Ever since seeing it, I’ve been wanting to make them and finally did this past week. I posted pics at my blog. I went a little crazy with them! Thanks also for posting the calculation to make different sizes as I did size it up a bit for some other water bottles I have. I was thinking they’d also be great for a bottle of wine!

My floss rest in a 66 quart tote if only a small plastic box would organize it. How would that be.

the thing is that you work better and more effective in a tidy room. *sigh*
maybe i should follow your example and clean up, but you’ve said it: never enough hours in the day!

OOOOhhhhhh s and aaaaaahhhhhs !!!! Your organized shelves look wonderful !!! I’m jealous — right now my sewing room looks like a tornado went through it!

As far as the “not enough hours in the day” — OH I CAN RELATE !! I was just thinking that late last night (or I should say early this morning — as in 2 AM) as I was finally getting a chance to post pictures, etc on my blog.

LOVE your button shelf. What a great idea. I have several huge jars for ribbons & trims and have wanted to do the same thing with my buttons, but I just don’t have the counter/shelf space for all those little jars! Your shelf is a great idea and it looks so cool!

Great organization. I like the shelf with the glass jars you can see exactly what’s inside. Right now I have everything in a fishing tackle box-you can’t see them except when I drag out the box.

That is genius! And it is one of those things I can’t believe I hadn’t already figured out. I need a couple of colors of paints but in small quantities and the little tester jars are a great solution. Thanks! The shelf is great!
