Glorious Patchwork

The first quilting book I ever bought was Glorious Patchwork by Kaffe Fassett. It seemed like an extremely frivolous purchase given I didn’t quilt. When I showed up to my first quilting class (two years ago this month) I was delighted to find out we’d be making the Leafy Rosy Quilt from that very book. Kismet.

I’ve purchased quite a few quilting books since. This book is still my favorite. Every time I go through it I discover a fresh nugget of inspiration. Kaffe’s concept of ‘Colour Recipes’ create a sensory experience all by themselves. An excerpt from the Pastel Rosy colour recipe:

“The overall effect of this scheme is dusty faded floweriness. The large-scale florals are sweet pink, dusty, soft duck-egg and sky blue, pale ochre, mauve, sage, muddy lavender, pale chestnut, dull moss green and rose tones.”

Sweet pink? I’ve never heard of that color but I know exactly what it looks like. Same goes for muddy lavender, one of my favorites.

In determining the color recipe for my Wavy Log Cabin quilt I let Kaffe do the work via his Blue Potentilla print hanging on the chair. The Kona cotton (Violet KC136) used for the sashing matches the violet in the Potentilla print exactly. I pulled blue, purple and greens that complemented the Potentilla print before I started. If a fabric didn’t look good laying on top of that print it got 86′d. I mixed the prints as I created each block.

As I enter the home stretch I’m really happy with the color play across the blocks. Matching to a single fabric made it easy to stick to the recipe.

That is so wacky and wonderful! I was already in love with the colors, and now you’ve added that touch of randomness in the piecing that I adore. I too have Glorious Patchwork, and although I rarely follow patterns, just looking at the book gets me inspired.

That’s really great advice for choosing fabrics, Kathy. I tend to just stick to buying a bunch from one line, so that I can be reasonably sure that they all go well together, but I’d been wondering about combinging fabrics from different lines, which seems a litle daunting. Now I have a much clearer idea of one method of selecting a palette! Thanks.

I’m new to quilting, and the first book I ever looked at was this same one. Totally inspiring. While I still knit more than I quilt (countless knits to 2.5 finished quilts), I must say that his descriptive recipes have influenced the way I add to my fabric stash.

Beautiful log cabins. And the wavy lines as well. That will be one beautiful quilt!

This is going to be a beautiful quilt!
I know it’s been said already but I always use that as an excuse to continue lurking.
Thank you for being an inspiration.

Oh, Kathy, I love that quilt so much ~ and I can’t believe you’ve only been at this for two years!
Have you done anything with the blockswap squares yet? I keep taking them out and looking at them, but nothing more . . .

Beautiful colors Kathy! I think that you’d make Kaffe proud. Don’t you just love Kaffe Fassett … he has the best eye for color of all the designers. And he’s not afraid to mix patterns. Looks like you’ve got that lesson down pat. :-)

love it love it- kind of like Nancy Crow, Gee’s Bend- and I have been very into Kaffe, too- his book Pattern Library is inspiring me to knit swatches of the patterns for a baby blanket. Good job!
