The Beginning of Great Things

Ashley gave me the bug to start my very own Chevron Scarf. Hers is absolutely gorgeous. There’s a Flickr group too. My final push came yesterday when I met Daphne for a little shopping at Churchmouse after she biked 33 miles in Chilly Hilly! She gave me the low down on Socks That Rock and Koigu and why the Chevron Scarf was a fun pattern for both. I acted like I understood but really didn’t until I started knitting the pattern. I picked these two Koigu KPPPM yarns, p449 and p113.

Koigu is a real treat. Pure luxury in the hands. And the colors! Oh man, I’m starting to really get knitting. Now I just need to work on understanding knitting instructions. You’ll notice some extra loose ends on the right hand side. Taking the whole ‘changing colors’ thing too literally. I now understand the tip in the book: “When switching between the two colors, pick up the new color in front of the old color every time. This way the yarns will be carried neatly along the edge of the scarf as you knit.” Ah, yes, I just leave the yarns hanging as I switch back and forth. Fortunately, I figured this out by the second color change.

I finished The Kite Runner. Wow, what a great read. Hosseini is a great storyteller, compelling characters and a page turning series of events. I really enjoyed the contrast between the character’s childhood in Afghanistan and life in the US. Lots of sensory detail that makes each scene come alive. Time to peruse the isles of The Book Club for my next read.

You are off to a great start on your scarf, I like the colors of Koigu you chose (that stuff is like butter, I love it!).

That scarf is the first knitted thing that’s excited me in a long time. Thanks!
I loved The Kiterunner. The best read I’d had in a long time.

What a GREAT combo! I love the colors. And I may have knit my scarf out of STR, but at heart, I am 100% a koigu girl. Love it!

Oh my gosh, I just re-read the 2nd paragraph–you were cutting the yarn each row? I’m glad you figured that one out, or you would’ve been one sad puppy at the end :) Another tip, if you’re not doing it already: slip the first stitch at the beginning of each non-pattern row. Make for a neater edge!

Love the scarf! Darn that Ashley and her TRENDS! I feel like the rat chasing after her sweet pied piper-esque tunes… (I *might* be waiting for some STR to arrive to begin a *certain* neck warming apparatus)

And I agree about The Kite Runner. It was sort of surreal, as I read it while I was in the United Arab Emirates over Christmas.

I like that scarf a lot and the koigu is great to work with.

I read the kite runner quite a while ago but I remember about it being a sensory experience. It was a good read but very disturbing to me to.

I just finished The Double Bind by Chris Bohjalian and I loved it. It was a really good read- a real page-turner!

I love your color selection for your scarf! I have some Koigu in my knitting stash, just waiting to become socks. It’s all I want to knit, but I have 2 other projects I MUST finish first :) So, I know how you feel!
