My cousin’s baby arrived right on schedule. The finishing of this quilt did not. One of those projects that got put aside and had a really hard time fighting its place back into the line up. Maitreya at Craftlog was my inspiration for doing this Denyse Schmidt design as a baby quilt. The piecing was extremely easy. Using the templates to cut the strips was the most time consuming aspect of the construction.
I used Kona Cottons and will share those color details when I post pics of the finished quilt. Translation: I pulled out the color swatches which I’ve now misplaced!
I’m not in the mood to mark the top and plan to do an easy cross hatch quilting pattern (same one she shows in the book for this quilt). I’ve placed two starting lines for the center quilting lines using painter’s tape. It seems like it should work (said hopefully as she crosses her fingers above the keyboard).
I have this little attachment for my sewing machine. Hook it on and magically sew the same distance from the previous line. This also strikes me as a very theoretically sound idea. You’ll be the first to know how it all works out.

Id love to know if that funky little tool works & where it goes on the machine!
Oh, what a lovely color combo! That’s one of my favorite quilts in the book–but I like it even better with these colors!
i have used that little tool and am interested in your take on it… mine squirrled around a bit because the screw that locked it in place doesn’t so well… the quilt colors are great, i am looking forward to the finished project. your work is always so wonderful.
That is great. Love the colors. Good to know that that one is not too hard. I have one of those devices too. Can’t remember if I’ve used it. What kind of machine do you have? I use Elna’s, but someday would like a Bernina. Mine are great for my current level (I have their most basic and a pretty advanced one.
congraulations !!! I have one of those things, but never paid attention to it before. Let us know what you think. Clarice
Very fun funky modern quilt – not baby-ish at all… I’m not a real fan of baby-ish designs, love it!
That is gorgeous! I’m sure they won’t mind one bit that it’s a little late. I love the colors. Can’t wait to see how quilting will change the look of it.
Very nice! I also have a guide for my walking foot and have only used it once. You’re right, it sounds great in theory, but it gets a little tricky when you need to turn the quilt. Best of luck!
LOVE your quilt, beautiful work.
if i was a baby, i would rather sleep under that beautiful modern quilt than anything else! love it!
What a great combo! Contemporary, but still fun and bright.
I actually used that little quilt spacing attachment last week for the first time, and it does work. Mine flipped around quite a bit, but it kept its place. The funny thing is that I left it sitting in the tool box for almost a year because I was scared to try and figure it out. Um, oh…stick it in the walking foot. Got it. As you can see, I can only handle one new learning experience at a time.
I have a guide that fits on my walking foot and I use it all the time. Beautiful quilt!
Beautiful quilt! I love that little attachment – and your blog!
I have the same little tool – it works with or without the walking foot. Recently used it for a 1″ cross-hatch. Have fun!
Love this and really marvel at how straight your quilt sandwich is. I would have to remember to tape the backing to the floor.
It’s a beauty. I haven’t had patience to try the tape. I’ve just marked with a chalk line a couple of rows at a time. It isn’t the most accurate line though but then I tend to want to rush through my quilting phase. Issues with instant gratification — wrong hobby, I know! That quilt will make a lovely backdrop for baby photos.
Classy quilt. It’s one that will be kept around long after the ‘baby’ years.
This will be a great baby gift. The colors are wonderfully vibrant, just right for a little one.
I love my attachment and use it all the time. My friend uses tape with better success than I do. I usuallly use the water erasable pen for my first line and then the guide on my walking foot. I always enjoy your photos and projects!
Great quilt — I’ve always liked that design and the colors you chose are great! I have that gizmo too, so I look forward to hearing your opinions on using it to quilt.
LOOOVE this. Love.
The quilt looks amazing. I look forward to seeing it once its quilted. I have one of those thingys but haven’t worked out how to attach it to my walking foot. I have used it with the normal sewing foot.
love the colours. it will look really great once it is all quilted. :0)
I love those strong colors! It will make a great gift for the new baby, on time or not.
hm, I think my first comment got lost, so again: I love those strong colors, and it will be a great gift, no matter whether on schedule or not!
be sure: the attachment works well, i own the same and am very glad to have it!
a lovely gift for the baby and the mom… i like the modern design and the clear lines!
Looks great Kathy! I too have something similar and while you need to watch carefully it works great! Can’t wait to see the finished product!
Can’t wait to see it finished. Congratulations to the new parents.
One of my favorite patterns. I love your choice of colors.
Wow, I love it! You are doing a great job, it looks amazing!
