I found it. I’ve discovered the perfect treat to send for the proverbial classroom party. Yes, I know I could send in the juice boxes, offer to bring plates and cups, buy a pack of cookies at the Safeway bakery. It’s just not me. I’m too neurotic to be that practical. I have to cook something. On top of that, I don’t want it to contain sugar and I want to be sure the kids will eat it, tough combo. For your school entertaining pleasure I present: Pigs in a Blanket.
Ingredients:
One box Pepperidge Farms Puff Pastry sheets
One Package Hot Dogs
One Egg beaten with 2 tablespoons of water
Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees. Lay the pastry sheet out and cut it into sixteen squares. 4 columns, 4 rows. Cut the hot dogs into chunks 3/4 inch in length. Center one hot dog slice on each pastry square. Repeat for the second pastry sheet.

Brush each corner of the pastry square with egg wash. Fold one corner on top. Fold the opposite corner over the first. Fold the remaining two corners over the top forming a little package. Bake in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes (my time on a test run was 15 minutes, when I loaded up the cookie sheet they took 20 minutes to puff and brown).
When the girls went out trick or treating Tuesday night a girl from Caitlin’s class came up to me and said she LOVED the hot dog croissants. I was beaming at the compliment.
Saphira’s gloves turned out totally cool. The super glue worked like a charm. My pictures of the costumes were horrible. I always remember too late that waiting till Halloween night to take the pictures means that it will be dark outside leaving me with one option: a flash photo in front of the fireplace.

Love the costumes and the pigs in a blanket. So cute and yummy.
Those look so good, my picky family would love them! I’m definately going to give them a try.
Sage wants these for dinner now- why do I look at blogs with my three year old?
They look yummy, and your pictures are fine!! We loved the fingernails on the gloves!
Those look lovely. Can you send some this way please?
Yum, we’ve made those at our house as well. We used Pillsbury crescent rolls and Lil’ Smokies instead, but same concept. Always a good treat.
Pigs in the blanket were the one appetizer my sister demanded at her wedding–she said her husband could have the big antipasto spread that he wanted, as long as there were pigs in the blanket too. So: giant, delicious antipasto spread with imported meats, cheeses, olives, etc….and pigs. Guess which the caterers ran out of first!
Those look so yummy indeed! Thanks for sharing the recipe
I like nice and simple recipes.
oh i know that photo scenerio, i have one great tinkerbell and one sadly flash photoed punk fairy. but your piggies look like they would be a hit! thanks for sharing…. and whew… it’s OVER!
Oooh, thanks for posting the Pigs In A Blanket recipe!!! Sounds great. Did you try to keep them warm for the school party or are they just as yummy cold? Thanks again!
uuuh…I hope you know that us Germans are notorious for making things with puff pastry.. lol.. we call it Blätterteig which actually means leafdough and refers to the different layers you´ll get. I remember making it from scratch once.. never again! lol.. But there won´t be a party here without puff pastry filled with various things – ham and cheese, salami and cheese, turkey and cheese, veggie mix, cut up hotdogs and if you´ve heard of it – nutella. It´s a haselnut-chocolate spread that most kids love and it goes quite well in the puff pastry, so do some preserves and not too moist fruits.. hmmmmmmmmmmmmm thanks for getting me hungry for puff pastry.. lol..
My digital abandoned me halloween night after taking some shots – it´s had an error message ever since and I could not take even one measly picture at the Kreativ-Welt expo in Wiesbaden yesterday – argh!
I love the costumes though and especially the gloves.. coooool
Love, love, love the piggy tutorial! My daughter is snack helper at her school this week. Can these be served cold?

Hotdogs? I don’t understand why you’re anti-sugar, but ok with hotdogs. Aren’t they chalked full of hormones and who knows what else? I don’t mean to be overly critical…but hotdogs? Of course the kids loved them. There is NO nutritional value (unless you count highly processed fat and protein as nutrition)!
I think I mentioned I’m neurotic
I baked these and delivered them right before the party. I’ll have to do a test on eating them cold. I’m sure my kids will be up for it.
In response to Healthnut (whose e-mail address wasn’t valid, aren’t we all surprised) I used Applegate Farms hot dogs. You can check them out here: http://www.applegatefarms.com/great_organic_hotdog.shtml
I would argue with the claim that there is no nutritional value in them. For the record, they do not have any hormones or nitrates. Do I feed them to my kids everyday? No. I try to keep my family fed with whole foods but we enjoy our snacks and junk food now and then. I’m trying to teach my kids balance in how they make choices about what they eat. It works for us.
My whole thing with sugar is that kids bounce off the wall when that’s all there is to eat, a common occurrence at these classroom parties. I like bringing something that balances that out.
I’m not trying to save the world…I love your idea. I, too, am always searching for something to bring to school for my 6 year olds’ first grade class. I I usually succumb to something sugar infested..lol..so this would be a good change for the kids.

I’m hungry now for those! They are a nifty, quick treat. I made some years ago for a kid’s party – used the pillsbury roll-out croissant rolls and wrapped around sm. dogs. Smart mommy, you! Quilt looks wonderful.
This is a nice idea, thanks for sharing it! My mom used to make similar party food, small hot dogs (maybe 10cm) in puff pastry, called “Würstchen im Schlafrock” which roughly translates to “sausages in a dressing gown”
But chopping up the sausages makes for even smaller pieces, very handy!
These would be great with veggie dogs. I think my kids would love them. Thanks for the great idea!
Yum. I made these for a party today and they were snatched up faster than anything else on the table. Thanks.
Brilliant and just in time for my son’s birthday this week! Thank you.
okay, those look wonderful.. I want to do something like that for my daughter’s school, but they will not let us bring anything homeade to school… unfortunately.. but I can try this at home though!!! Yeah! Thank you for the idea.
Oh yes, thanks for the recipe. My son is such a picky eater and I get so bored making him the same things. This will be a nice step away from the norm.
Every few minutes Firefox tries to open a site. Because I just got a Trojan off my computer. So the link to the virus does not work anymore but Firefox keeps trying to open it. It says it cannot display this webpage. So how do I stop this?.
I have been exploring for a bit for any high-quality articles or blog posts on this kind of area . Exploring in Yahoo I at last stumbled upon this web site. Reading this information So i am happy to convey that I’ve an incredibly good uncanny feeling I discovered exactly what I needed. I most certainly will make sure to don’t forget this web site and give it a glance regularly.
