I’m a knitter. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve attempted to be able to say this. My earliest memory is 8 years old. A visit to my grandmother’s house. Circular plastic needles. I never got past the 4th or 5th row. Same for all my later tries. I just never got it. Could…never…finish…anything.

Last Spring Leil and I took a knitting class together. 4 sessions. I knitted my first square patch and by week two I’d had enough of practicing and wanted a real project. There’s a knitting shop on the Island called Churchmouse Yarns & Teas. They have a million beautiful and wonderful projects around the shop. I picked one, tried it on and bought the same yarn as the sample. I didn’t want any unexpected bumps on my road to this finish line.

Then summer came. A really big bump that was. I laid down the needles and didn’t pick them up again until last month. But I did pick them up. I set to finishing off those final rows and binding off for the first time in my life.

And now I can say I’m a knitter.

Congratulations! That’s a beautiful scarf–and an inspiring story. I love the idea of knitting, and even own a few knitting books, but I’ve never managed to cast on properly. Someday–maybe when my own little girl is old enough to take a class with me. That sounds like fun!

Excellent Job Kathy!! The scarf is fabulous. I’m another non-knitter, tried about 5 times and just never got it. I can crochet liike the wind and maybe that’s why I fall back on that too often.

    Great finish!

And of course, your first finished knitting project as a knitter is wonderful and unique. Diagonal! And such a nice shape and length. No, I shall not start a new hobby. No, I shall not start a new hobby.

Wow – what a beatiful beginning! And now you’ll have twice the amount of stuff to stash and plan!

If you have a moment and the inclination, I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s curious about the yarn details, but we’ll admire you even if you don’t have the time to post them.

Beautiful colors, gorgeous yarn. Yes, please tell us what type of yarn you used. Did it stripe like that on its own? (Like those sock yarns we all hear about.) Or did you change colors yourself? Either way, congrats, now that you have added knitter to your growing list of creative talents.
