A Square Deal – Mystery Quilt Step 4

The final step of the mystery quilt was a fun surprise. In addition to showing the above layout for the blocks the instructions revealed that the half light, half dark design makes them very similar to a Log Cabin block. Because of this attribute they can be arranged in any of the traditional Log Cabin layouts.

I proceeded to try out 4 additional layouts. I only have about 15 feet to stand back from my design wall. As I did each layout it was very difficult to discern any difference. What a delight to take pictures and view the digital image. Quite a difference! I picked up this trick from Jan.

I’m piecing the blocks right now and will surprise you with the outcome. I’m loving how it all came together in the end. I definitely had a few, hmmm what was I thinking moments during the construction.

On the subject of anniversary well wishes. I’m truly overwhelmed with the sincerity of everyone’s comments on my post yesterday. Wow. Thank you. Now, if you met me on the street I’m sure you’d think I wasn’t a day over 27… some of the comments led me to believe that you might have thought that lovely photo was recent. That’s the first photo of my hubby and me ever taken back in 1989 when we first met. The old days of film meant there’s not a lot of photo documentation of our first days of romance. This is a very special photo to me and I loved sharing it with you all.

I was thinking log cabin during step 3. It looks great.

I vote for layout 1, 2 or 5…although the layout here spells out my initials very well, so I could have chosen this one too!! “JC”…do you see it? I think it is a very cool pattern. ANother trick for looking and seeing farther away is to stand with your backto your design wall and hold a hand mirror in your hand and look into it to see the quilt. It gives you a little more room to view. But the best way is the camera!! I notice all sorts of things in pictures that I did not see in person.

PS: for some reason I can not use the apostrophe to type my comment which makes me sound weird..does it not? No conjunctions!

Wow, they really do look different, especially when I’m looking at the thumbnails in flickr. What a neat trick. It’ll be neat to see which one you choose – it turned out beautifully.

Love the designs that move out from the center, in that traditional log cabiny way. What a fun project.. so which do you choose?

It’s so fun watching this quilt come together. And I really enjoy looking at the different block layouts and seeing how the same building blocks can produce such hugely varied final products. Inspirational _and_ educational!

I think I like the last one on flickr. It will be hard to make a decision.

Laying out the blocks is my favorite part of making a quilt! I love blocks like this that give you so many options. It looks great!

  8. [...] My original posts about this Mystery Quilt: one, two and three. And, yes, I got confused myself that the titles to those posts actually reference Step 1, Step 3, and Step 4. Please don’t ask me to elaborate on that, I have absolutely no idea what I was thinking. [...]
