Step 3 consisted of joining my remaining selvedge to selvedge strips to make 2 1/2″ by 6 1/2″ strips. I then joined them to the pieces I created in Step 2 to make 60 blocks. 30 of each kind.
As I set up my stacks to complete the 60 blocks I noticed a stack of extra strips. Hmmm. Missed from Step 2. Big arrrgggh. The time saver of strip piecing is obviously the assembly line construction. So, back to Step 2 and a repeat of creating the center of the remaining blocks. I was thinking Step 2 was too short.

I finished up Falling Angels by Tracy Chevalier. What a powerful read. It pulled emotion out of me that I hadn’t felt for a long time. It fit right in with my recent mullings over feminism and women’s roles. After only two books I’m totally in love with this author. She doesn’t try to tidy all the loose ends. Lots of room for personal contemplation, what a gift she has. On to The Lady and the Unicorn.

I just finished up Falling Angels also. Very good read. I very much liked Maudes Mother and did NOT like the Grandmother. I agree she is a wonderful author. Have you ever read Lee Smith? She too, makes one think long after the book is done. My favorite is Fair and Tender Ladies. Oh and I just love your blog. Always a feast for inspiration.
Thank you for sharing…
Love your blocks so far!!!
I’m loving how the colors and patterns are coming together in this mystery.
If I squint and look at the blocks they have a neat interlocking thing happening there that should look really neat when it all comes together!! Can’t wait to see how it turns out!
in my next lifetime when I have more time to read again (right now my last resort at getting ANY kind of book into my head is to listen to audio books when I go running.. lol – I used to read Harry Potter to the kids when they were born just to get to read it..haha) I´ll have to read one of Tracy Chevaliers books. Until then I just admire the fabric combinations you picked for your blocks!
I guess I should get started on my mystery quilt. That is my goal to buy for when I go to Houston IQF. I am buying kinda only for that quilt so that I have a memory of it as well.
The blocks look really neat so far. I’ll have to check our Falling Angels. I don’t know if you got my comment about suggested books a while ago, but one that I think you will really like is Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver. Oh, and The Kitchen-god’s wife by Amy Tan.
I can completely relate to your step two mishap. If I had a dollar for every extra piece or missing piece of fabric when strip piecing, I would be a rich woman.
Chevalier is a wonderful author. I appreciate her ability to incorperate the historical and social elements of a particular time era as the infrastructure of her novel. Fallen Angels is a great read. I am sure you will enjoy The Lady and The Unicorn.
