A Square Deal – Mystery Quilt Step 1

Esther’s has launched another Mystery Quilt. This one is called A Square Deal and is published by Judy Hopkins (same author as the one I did previously). In a mystery quilt the final design isn’t revealed until the end. Step One includes recommended guidelines to follow in selecting the fabrics. I basically ignored these in All Awhirl which resulted in lots of color and very little contrast. I was happy with the end result but this time around I’m attempting to follow the guidelines more closely.

From Left to Right:

2 light prints. Should be the same color or very similar in color but different in visual texture.

2 medium prints. Small to medium scale, can be the same color and different in visual texture or can be two different colors. I fell in LOVE with that Kaffe Fassett Dahlia print and used it as my color base for selecting all the other fabrics. Not what I would define as a small or medium scale print but I REALLY liked it.

2 dark prints. They will appear side by side so they need to be different enough from one another that you can see a “line” where the two fabrics join.

Lovely – I think the Kaffe Fassett is going to be what makes it. Looking forward to the reveal.

Wow what a store, I almost died looking at those all those fabulous trims. I think you did a great job choosing the fabrics to keep with her directions and yet keep your own style too! It will be fun to see the pieces as they progress into what becomes the finished quilt. I love anything Kaffe so I might be biased!

Let’s see if the link works this time!

Mmmmm. The dahlias are beautiful. Those and the light green dots (second from left) really stand out to me. A mystery quilt? Isn’t it hard to keep from skipping ahead to see the finished result? I’d have a hard time.

Love your fabric choices. I can’t wait to see the pieces come together. I’m kind of a “visual” person. Always afraid to try a mystery quilt. Keep us posted.

Kaffe Fasset’s dahlia print is very gorgeous and looks great with all the other fabrics. (I have a couple fat quarters in different colorways … beautiful print.) I really liked what you did with the last mystery quilt project. It’ll be a joy seeing what happens this time around. Sounds like a mystery quilt is a very fun thing to do. Enjoy!!

  13. [...] My original posts about this Mystery Quilt: one, two and three. And, yes, I got confused myself that the titles to those posts actually reference Step 1, Step 3, and Step 4. Please don’t ask me to elaborate on that, I have absolutely no idea what I was thinking. [...]
