As with most things I undertake, my effort to compile all the book recommendations was a tad bigger than anticipated. I’m glad to have it done and posted, another item off my to do list. I made it a permanent page over to the right. Check it out. Thanks to everyone for your thoughtful participation. It’s exactly the kind of response I was hoping for! A few more came in after I started and I’ll get those in when I can.
I signed up for Amazon’s Associates program awhile back. It’s a quick online form to complete and just tags onto your Amazon account. When I make a link to a book the link includes not only the Amazon book page but my Associate’s ID tagged onto the end. If someone ends up buying the book by getting to Amazon via my link I get 4% of the sales price. Originally when I signed up I thought I could purchase books via my own links. Sort of like a built in discount. No go. They disallow that one (in case your brain works like mine!) I found the secret code for generating a link outside of their tools that doesn’t have all the graphics (I love web site forums). If you need assistance in doing that drop me a note and I’ll send you the info.
I’ve been staying up past my bedtime completely absorbed by The Good Earth. Happy reading!

Goodness – your list is HUGE! I’m glad you’re enjoying the Good Earth!
What an undertaking but very generous of you to provide a compilation (as well as the Amazon.com link). Thank you!
I would love to have the instructions to tag my items w/o using their graphics. Tell me more!
Here’s the information that appeared as a response from the Amazon Associates Program to someone inquiring about how to do the text link:
After our recent system upgrade, the simple URL format has been
changed. Older formats will still work, but you should start using
the new format.
If you would like to link directly to an item’s detail page using a
text link, you can use the following format to construct your links:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/ASIN/ref=nosim/?tag=your_Associates_ID
Replace ASIN with the 10-digit ASIN/ISBN of the product,
and “your_Associates_ID” stands for your Associates ID. The
text, “ref=nosim,” is what allows your visitor to be taken directly
to an item’s detail page when the link is used.
Although the above format can be used to construct your links, we do
recommend that you use our Build Links tools at
http://associates.amazon.com. These tools will automatically insert
your Associates ID into the HTML code, which allows us to correctly
track sales from your links and will present you with images and
product information where applicable.
I hope this information is helpful. Thank you for participating in
the Associates Program.
Great list, thank you! And love your cat, I have a thing for orange tabbys (since I have one).
What a wonderful list of books. Now I want to reread everything I’ve read before that’s on the list, plus a whole lot of new ones. Thanks for putting it altogether.
GOOOOOOD GRIEEEEEF! That was a lot of work. I am sure that book editors at the NY Times don’t work that hard to compile a reading list. Thanks so much. I have a feeling I will be referring to it often.
OH MY! This list will keep me busy for many months. Thanks for organizing these good reads for everyone. Love you.
