Since completing Mr. E’s teacher quilt, I’ve been mulling over ideas for making mini-quilts with the individual self-portraits. I hope the other parents are as excited as I am in how this turned out. I’m going to offer them on a commission basis. It measures 10 x 11 inches with a small hanging sleeve on the back.
I’m hooked on these Kona cottons. My new favorite color is Turquoise. It’s an RJR cotton that I bought at the shop vs. the Robert Kaufman Kona cottons that I’ve used before. There’s a mixture of both lines in the quilt.

Oh, I’m sure the other parents will love these too. I continue to be floored by your machine quilting. Your straight line stuff is so even and your free motion stuff is fun. I know it is mostly practice, but can I ask what kind of machine you use? I may be in the market for an upgrade this fall…
so wonderful kathy – i would imagine the parents will be thrilled.
I love the self portrait! I can see where they’d be a big hit with lots of parents, displayed right there beside the yearly school picture
So cool! I love it.
I agree with Amy, I am flabbergasted how well you machine quilt. I love this!
This is *way* cool and reminds of the Quilting Arts summer issue! They have an article in there about quilts artists made using their self-portraits.
Anyway, if I was another parent in the classroom, I would definitely buy one from you!
What a lovely idea. I’ve made a cushion with one of my sons’ drawings and it’s so special. Some things must be kept and treasured.
I’ve just recently discovered your blog and must say, “I LOVE it.” As a retired teacher, I can say that your self-portrait mini-quilts should be a huge hit with parents. They are wonderful. I would love to know what thread and thread weight you use for machine quilting. It looks fantastic!
What fun! And I’m sure lots of moms were looking at your quilt wishing they could have the part of the quilt that was there child’s. Great idea! When you’re rich and famous, remember us.
how do you do the self portait? would like to do one…what materials do you use? LOVE your site!
