Notepad Cover for Mom

This is the notepad cover I designed and made for my Mom for Mother’s Day. She serves as a board member on a regional arts council and is taking over as President at the beginning of July. Way to go Mom! Now she can attend the meetings in style.

She’s been wanting something for an 8 1/2″ x 11″ notepad vs. the 5″ x 7″ version I’ve shown before. I decided on this folder design. There’s a pocket for papers on the inside left and a pen pocket on the right side. I inserted Peltex interfacing between the fabric layers, a separate piece on each side. I left about 3/4 inch in the spine area. This gave me space to machine stitch down the open edges on the inside after the Peltex was inserted. It also creates more room to accomodate a larger stack of papers on the inside. I top stitched around the outside edges to secure the interfacing and provide more support to the whole design. Here’s a pic of the inside:

Thanks for all the nice comments you’ve been leaving. I like to follow each comment’s link back to the writer’s blog and then leave you comments about your creations. I’m a school volunteer on steroids this week so I’m lagging on this little system but I will catch up!

What a great idea with the notebook-great fabrics. And congrats to your mom! Thanks for the nice whip up comment. There were a lot of great entries this week- including yours. What a great piece. I especially love the bottom section of green pasture. Very nice!

The professional quality of your work is so high. If you ever feel like doing it, I would love to see a tutorial of how to make a notepad cover like this.

Kathy, The notebook cover is so beautiful. I was able to share your gifts with Jo Ann. She was impressed not only with the choice of fabrics but commented on the professional quality of your work. I can hardly wait for the next meeting when I am asked where I got the unique notebook and I can say, ” Oh, my daughter made it.” Love, Mom

Okay, I keep seeing people reference your blog and I had to come and check it out. Your work is beautiful – and it looks like you share so many secrets! Thank you! This notebook cover is beautiful – the red and black are striking together.

I know this is a very late comment, but I came here to see the water bottle carrier, and started reading the sewing entries. I hope you’ll be willing to do a tute for this! My current folio at work is SO boring – it would be wild to carry something out of fabric I selected myself. And would make a nice gift as well! If not, thanks anyway for posting such lovely bits of inspiration!

  10. [...] I feel like the tortoise these days, slow and steady. I’ve also been singing ‘put one foot in front of the other…’, a LOT. It actually works. I’d like to have 3 testers for my Note Taker Folio pattern. It’s based on the design I created for my Mom last year with some fun twists added. I’m looking for a continuum of skills, beginner to expert. You would receive the pattern early next week with one week to make it and give me your feedback. E-mail me at kathy at pinkchalkstudio.com if you’re interested. [...]
